    1. William Arthur MASSEY born Ruabon DEN 1867
    2. Donald Massey
    3. I have details of the early years of the above, the last sighting being his witnessing the marriage of his brother George Henry in Warwickshire in 1909. I believe he is the M. Massey shown in the 1901 census at Llandudno, RG13/5289, F101, as a lodger in the household of ?Hatship? The age, occupation and birthplace all fit, and there was no M Massey born at Ruabon round about the same time. I have been unable to find a marriage Entry in GRO Index from 1891 (when he was living with his parents in Chester, unmarried), notr a Death entry from 1909, for the next 50 years plus. Have you come across him? Donald Massey

    2. Donald Massey
    3. The above was at Castle Howard, North Riding of Yorkshire, unmarried, in the 1901 Census, but I have been unable to find either a Marriage or Death entry for her during the next 50 years in the GRO Indexes. Do you know something I don't? Donald Massey

The DNA marker that is different between the two DNA samplers in the case under discussion is Marker #9. To get technical, Sampler #7136, deccendant from Richard(5) of Patrick Co., VA [alleged grandson of my Hezekiah (3)] , has for the 9th marker [DYS439] an allele count of 11 whereas Sampler #13401, traced back definitely to John Massey (5) of Giles Co., TN and tentatively to Hezekiah (2), has an allele count of 12 for the 9th marker. Mr. Bennett Greenspan, well known expert on DNA analysis, says the 9th marker is the FASTEST CHANGING marker that has been studied. So we can't state with certainty that Richard(5) and Hezekiah(2) connect this side of the Atlantic but almost certainly they have a common ancestor. To get even more technical, there's a 50% probability that they connect within 9 generations back from them and a 90% probability within 21 generations back. In view of the fact that it's the 9th marker involved AND since there's some genealogical evidence for a US connection, the probability of a connection at a more recent recent generation level goes up. Regards to all, Theron Smith 5-great grandson of Hezekiah(3), son of Richard(2), brother of Hezekiah (2)

    3. Does anyone have data on the ancestors of the Patrick Co., VA MASSEYs - many of whom later moved to Mercer Co., WV? Judge Massey placed Richard(5) Massey of Patrick Co., VA BY HYPOTHESIS as son of Abel(4) Massey and placed Abel(4) BY HYPOTHESIS as son of Hezekiah(3) Massey of Brunswick Co., VA, Granville Co., NC; Wake/Franklin Cos., NC , my gg grandfather. It has been reported that Richard of Patrick may have married Winnie CHAMBLEE of Wake/Franklin Cos., NC. But there is no good data to verify any of this. Richard died bet 1836/8, Patrick Co, Va. A descendant of this Richard (5) has DNA that matches that of a descendant of Hezekiah (2) [uncle of William(3)] for 24 out of 25 markers. According to a Jan. 25, 1975 letter from Judge Frank A. 1. [MASSEY-L] Book entitled "Massey Wake County North Carolina Records"
    2. Carla Tate
    3. I have now completed my book on the Masseys of Wake Co. NC. This book is not a family history per se, but is a compilation of original research: it includes all census, tax list, wills, estates, deeds, marriage, divorce and death info on the Masseys in Wake Co. I compiled this book to assist researchers who do not have available to them the original resources that I coveted when I lived in CA (I now live in Raleigh, NC and have the Archives and Olivia Raney Library available to me). This book is in 3 ring binder looseleaf form deliberately. This is so that researchers can take out the pages they need and take them with them when they are going to do further research. There are no pictures in the book (except on the cover) and no narrative except a few interspersed comments by me throughout the text; it is purely original records. The book will sell for $19 plus mailing costs. It is 180 pages of text and 59 pages of index. If you wish to purchase the book, please send me an E-mail. The book will also be available for purchase at the Bolton Family Reunion at the end of April in Russellville, AL. This will be my only posting on this list to let people know about the book's availability; I have obtained the list administrator's permission to post this E-mail. In May I will be starting to do the same type of research in Franklin and Bute Counties, NC and plan to put out this information when that is completed. And by the way, I do have some different information than Judge Massey had in his wonderful books, all of which I have. 2. Barbara Ferrell
    3. The list of deaths from Judge Niles Diary apparently has a typo for C. M Massey who died in 1864. Going to the transcripts of the Diary which are online for the earlier years, I found he wrote "C. K. Massey". Searching the CW records, Captain C. K. (Conrad K. ) Massey was an officer in the 20th Regiment of MS, and died in action in 1864. The 20th Regt MS was formed from 5 or 6 counties, one of which was Noxubee. 1860 census of Noxubee Co, Macon, MS, page 858 has the following: C. K. Massey (Mapey) age 21 born MS Ann Massey (Mapey) age 21 born AL They are in the household of Jos/ Jas C. Buck age 34, born Penn and Ann C. Buck, age 25, born MS Now, this doesn't help much with the parents of Conrad K. Massey, but perhaps someone else will know the family. Barbara Ferrell

    3. Checking the abstract of Judge Niles' Diary, I think this should be C.K Massey. June 19, 1864, Sunday This morning I rode with Lucas out to Ben Rooks' (Harlow's old place) thence to the widow Rooks', thence to Sinclair's Spring-- thence home. L. told me C. K. Massey was killed, "Citizen" announces death of Colin Pearce. Jap Bridges & Dave Brown in trouble at Canton-- praying to be released. P. M. rode out there again--arriving just at sunset--stayed till 9 o'clock. I still don't know who this was, but suspect a search of the CSA soldiers from MS might help. Barbara Massey Ferrell

    3. I too, would like to know who C.M. Massey was. I sat in the library in Kosciusko and scanned Judge Niles diary record. Drury, one of my grandfather's much older brothers was mentioned. I didn't see C. M. Massey then. Drury Massey stayed in Attala Co, MS until his death. An angry Grandfather and son-in-law shot Drury in the back at night. Apparently Drury had been showing the wrong kind of attention to an underage young lady, rewarding her with silver dollars. An account of the incident can be found in the Attala Co, MS, library, in SOME ABSTRACTS FROM THE DIARY OF JUDGE NILES, 1814-1894. This was Drury Benson Massey who died in Nov 1871. I do not believe that C. M. was in the family of Joseph Massey. There were several Massey families in the 1850 and 1860 census records who did not seem to be related to ours. Anyone check the census for 1860 Attala County? Barbara Massey Ferrell

    3. I have never found a connection between my great grandfather Joseph Massey (b 1808) and Elam Waddel, a Cumberland Presbyterian minister. I have been told that Elam's wife was Margaret R. Campbell, and they married 5 April 1827 in Lauderdale Co. AL. The marriage record is there but I have not worked the census for the Waddels. The only reason I can figure that Joseph and Catherine's children were in the Waddel household is that Joseph's second wife was expecting her first child and Margaret Waddel was helping her out. Joseph and Louisa Margaret Emma Smith were married in Dec 1849, and John Travis Massey was born in Nov 1850. Louisa was only 20 years old at the time. Joseph was a licensed Deacon in the Methodist Episcopal Church and served different congregations in AL, MS, and LA. I have information from a cousin who said he was told that Joseph was buried on a ranch in Lampasses County. I have not been able to confirm this. Louisa Margaret was buried in San Saba County, TX with a sandstone marker now worn away so it would be difficult to find her grave. I do not know where Catherine Ray Massey is buried but it would make sense if she was in Attala Co. MS. More about this family is online in WorldConnect, database: barjeanm Barbara Massey Ferrell
