I discovered last night that when I would bring up the the Massey DNA page http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~mandaley/MasseyDNA.html I had been getting an earlier form of the home page (stored on my computer!) every time - didn't have all the text - such as the instructions for new participants to sign up. I was able to bring the latest DNA results chart ok. I discocovered I needed to clear out my HISTORY Internet connections and re-enter them and probably also clear out the pages that Internet Explorer automatically saves from my internet sessions. After doing that, I'm getting the full display of the Massey DNA home page. Now, I'm wondering how many other connections I had needed to clean up! I wonder how many others may be having this same problem without knowing it. [How to fix: right click on Internet Explorer; left click on "properties" ...Then make sure you change only what you really want to change. [I'll answer questions about this, but reccomend using my private Email.] Regards to all, Theron Smith.
I want to thank Betty for her kind words about my book. I do want to correct one thing; the book does not contain all the info available in the NC Archives on Wake Co. Masseys. Court records, a wonderful source of info, are specifically not included in the book, partially because some of them have already been extracted. And there are other lesser known records like bastardy bonds, guardianship records, etc. which are also not included. But these are the primary research records: census, tax lists, deeds, school records, wills, estates (which are extracts due to the length of the records), marriage, divorce and death records. On the Franklin Co. NC tax lists (which are spotty) in 1804 Celia Massey is listed with 584 acres and 2 black polls in Captain Dunne's District. In 1805 Cely Massey is listed with 475 acres and 2 black polls in Captain Strickland's District. In 1806 Celia Massey is listed with 475 acres and 2 black polls in Captain Obediah Strickland's District. In 1807 Celia Massey is listed with 475 acres with 2 black polls, in Captain Strickland's District. In 1808 Selah Massey is listed with 475 acres and 2 black polls in Captain Strickland's District; her son Asey Massey is listed with no land. In 1809 Celia Massey is listed with 2 black polls; her son Asa now has the 475 acres. In 1810 Selah Massey is listed with 2 black polls and no land in Captain Dunn's District; her son Asa was listed with 475 acres and 1 white poll. In 1811 and 1812 Asa Massey is listed with 472 acres 1 white poll and 2 black polls in Captain Dunn's District. In 1813 Asa is in Captain Thomas Dunn's District listed with 475 acres, 1 white poll and 2 black polls. Celia Massey does not show up again until 1814 when she is listed with 1 white poll in Captain Alford's District. (The only increase in any Massey's land between 1813 and 1814 is that Simeon Massey now had 307.5 acres of land; it is known that Asa died intestate in 1813.) (see below) (query: did Benjamin Bunn sell 307.5 acres of land to Simeon Massey?) In 1815 Celia Massey is listed with 1 black poll in Captain Alford's District, and Simeon has 565 acres of land. Celia never shows up on the tax records again and probably died about this time. By 1816 Simeon has 753 acres of land worth $753, 2 white polls and 2 black polls. Nathan Massey, Warren Massey, Eli Massey, John Parish and Avis Parish, Thomas Driver and Sally Driver, Lydia Massey, Lucy Masey, John Bolton and Selah Bolton, Briton Upchurch, Elizabeth Upchurch, and Zilpha Massey. Deed to Benjamin Bunn of Wake Co. for 575 acres of land located in both Wake and Franklin Co. NC adjoining land of Matthew Strickland, Jr., and Sherrod B. Martin received by them as heirs of Asa Massey, deceased, who died intestate on November 19, 1813. Said Asa Massey received this land by will of his father, Pettipool Massey, dated April 6, 1794, this was February 25, 1814 (Franklin Co. NC Deed Book 8, p. 92.) Close analysis of the above shows that Selah/Celia/Cely are all the same person. I am not aware of any proof of her maiden name, but there is a rumor in the Strickland family that Solomon Strickland first married Elizabeth Hodges and later Amy Pace. Unsubstantiated info from the Strickland researchers indicates that Elizabeth Hodges was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Hodges. If so they married 1760 in Guilford Co. NC. Thomas Hodges died 1816 and Sarah died September 3, 1817 and was originally from Livingston Co. KY. Pettipool Massey did witness a deed re Solomon Strickland: In 1786 witnessed a deed in Nash Co. NC Solomon Strickland to David Bissett, both of Nash, 2/4/1786 for 34 pounds 250 acres on Turkey Creek on both sides of the Great Branch, it being a grant to said Strickland on 11/1/1784. Witnesses were Pettipool Massey and John Rice. The possible surname of Celia being Hodges may also have come from the fact that on September 30, 1773 posted ad in VA Gazette, Williamsburg, VA regarding missing horses. Ad stated if the horses were found to return them to John Hodges in Henrico County, VA, near Westham. Posted reward. Described Pettipool Massey as a subscriber. Hope the above is helpful. I have just received a most unusual book titled "Massey Wake County North Carolina Records" and thought I would tell the group about it. This is not a genealogy but a transcription of all the original records the author could find at the North Carolina State Archives. It includes deeds, wills, tax lists, census, marriages, etc. each with citation. They are arranged in chronological order so you can easily tell which person of the same name the record is about. I'm slowly working my way through the book connecting records with people in my database and am finally beginning to understand the structure of this confusing family. This is a treasure trove of information and a rare bargain at the sales price. Including mailing costs, I paid about $23 for this book which includes records that would have taken me years to find and hundreds of dollars to have copied. I have no personal interest in the sale of this book, but will furnish the author's e-mail to anyone interested. Betty

Probably someone thought Celia was a more proper spelling of Selah. Pettipool Massey and my Richard Massey are both on the the Poplar Springs Baptist Church rolls - neither of their wife is. I've thought maybe Selah and Richard Massey' s first wife may have been Quakers from the names of their male children - but no backup for this idea. Others have speculated or guessed that Selah could have been a Williams or a Hodges. If anyone has an original source that supports either or both of these surnames, I'd love to hear from you! [No need to quote an Internet article unless they give their source.] Pettipool was a first cousin of my 4-great grandfather Richard Massey - I'd love to know more about both of their wives. Regards to all, Theron Smith

My John died intestate, so > no will, just a lot of legal wrangling between his children from his 1st > wife and the widow, who was 2nd wife. Anyway, thanks for sharing,Eleonore --------- Judge Frank Massey showed Arthur as son of Philip Massey, probably incorrect. New research for Bill Massey's MASSEY GENEALOGY 2000 showed Arthur's father as John (3) Massey son of Joseph(2); Richard (1) and hence one of OURS. How do you tie into McManus? Drewry (5) Massey (aka Andrew) (c1780 - c1850) youngest son of Arthur Massey and Elizabeth Alston 1m Mary McManus, dau of Lt. Hugh McManus and Elizabeth ----. Drewry's family and his brother Alston lived in Chesterfield Co., SC and are enumerated close to yours and, as you know, I have long thought they may be closely related, but I haven'y yet found the exact connection. Regards, Theron.
