Hugh Massey/Massie of Coddington in Cheshire, perhaps seen 13,14 Henry6 [i.e., 1435/6], married Ann Bold, daughter of Nicholas Bold of Coddington. Though not without controversy, this Hugh is frequently credited with being the ancestor of the Coddington Massies. He is also often shown, again not without controversy, as a grandson of the Sir John Massey of Puddington in Cheshire who fell at the battle of Shrewsbury [1403/4] fighting for Henry5. Then VISITIATIONS OF CAMBRIDGESHIRE [1575 and 1619] shows Nicholas Massey [of Coddington] as "younger son" of Hugh Massey of Coddington. Nicholas is placed as ancestor of Masseys in the Isle of Ely area of Cambridgeshie from which emigrants to MD and VA are sometimes placed. I am repeating my periodic requests for any possible sightings of the birth/baptism of the above. The first firm sighting I have of him is his marriage (to Anne EYTON) at Wrexham in 1818, but in the 1851 and 1861 Censuses he gave his birthplace as Chester c1796. He never lived in Cheshire after his marriage, living in Denbighshire and Shropshire until his death in 1870 I have searched all Chester City parishes, and several nearby parishes for a baptism of this name, without success. I am now looking at other possibilities, e.g. his being base born and his mother marrying a Massey later, his mother being widowed and remarrying, etc. To judge from the naming sequence of his children (and knowing his wife's parentage), his parents may have been John and Mary: a couple of these names had a daughter Charlotte baptised in Ruabon in 1790, but neither they nor she can be found with any certainty earlier or later. It is also possible that there was a death certificate and/or obituary in Arkansas. I have found only one Massey living in Miller Co. Is anyone on the list working the Masseys who settled in Jefferson County, AL in the 1800s? Does anyone have proof of the parentage of Samuel Massey who died there in 1829? His wife Sarah Glenn seems to be better documented. Are Samuel's brothers William Duke Massey, Jonathan Massey, and John Massey who went to KY and TX? Has any male Massey descendant agreed to DNA testing? James Massey, born in Md (I assume Maryland) in 1782 was also in the area. (Online files have his family as Josiah Massey.) Since DNA indicates a common ancestor in the past between my Massey family and John Taylor Massey ( probable son of James M. Massey), I would like to know more and work toward placing all of these men in their proper families. I recently talked with Daniel Massey, son of Judge Frank A. Massey. As many of you know, Judge Massey published three books: Book I Massey Families in America + My Massey Family in England Book II Massey Genealogy Addendum -in some cases the lines are continued down to 1850 and even later when possible. Book III Massey on Censuses -covers all states that had census records as early as 1850 - has a few records for 1860 and 1870 -handy to use and compare against when looking at census reports on ancestry.com Book II is of special value to researchers who have Massey ancestors that are not from Richard (1) of Charles City, Surry, and Prince George Cos., VA. This would include the line of Peter Massie of New Kent Co., VA; Thomas Massey of Chester Co., PA, and many others. There are chapters on 19 different branches of Masseys. The Masseys from Charles City, Surry, and Prince George Cos., VA are also covered in one chapter. Dan has reprinted all three books and is selling them as a set for $100.00. Just wanted to offer an addendum to this. The James H. Massey in Texas and Wright Counties in Missouri is the brother to my gggrandfather, John Wesley Massey of Giles and later Marshall County, TN. James married a lady from Giles County and moved to Texas-Wright County, Missouri, prior to 1850. His father, John Massey, decided to move up to live with him after his wife, Mary Henry Massey, passed away in 1856. He died in 1858 and is buried in a cemetery in Mountain Grove, MO, right on the Texas-Wright County line. This is in south-central Missouri. John Massey's children are mentioned in a court case in Marshall County, TN, in 1859. My gggrandfather, John W. Massey, is listed as one of the litigants. These Masseys are not Irish but moved to Tennessee from Lincoln County, NC, around 1820. This family can be traced back to Richard Massey of the mid to late 1600's in Charles City, Co., VA, through one of his sons, Hezekiah. There is discussion as to whether this Richard came from Cheshire Co., England, or Cambridgeshire. Any assistance would be appreciated. Sincerely, William R. I think this might be James and Faithful Strickland other children A description of the land is given. >From what I know of the area, it is between the Kelly's Creek and Elk River, about 2 miles of so inside Lincoln Co., TN. the court case of Martha V. Halbert. It does not name David Smith. However it does name Martha V.'s grandfather. Chances are this family moved to TN from Jackson Co., AL. Martha Smith is on page 90 of the attached 1840 census of Lincoln Co. TN. This case was subpoenaed Oct. 7, 1885. The deposition is dated Feb. 1, 1887. The court records in Tennessee list the Tennessee children for him because this only ones they knew of. James Massey died in LCT about 1839 or 1840. Not in Tennessee but Missouri. Leaving NO WIDOW, but 7 children: 1. Martha Smith 2. Sarah Dunlap 3. Jane Brown 4. James Massey 5. Ephraim Massey 6. Robert Massey 7. Margaret Patrick All of whom are now dead. Martha Smith left 4 daughters: 1. Margaret Weaver who died leaving 2 children: 1. Dona who married Jeff Ross or Russ in Marshall Co., TN and 2 Emmet whose residence is unknown. 2. Elizabeth Ross or Russ, who died leaving 3 children: 1. Jeff Ross or Russ of Marshall Co., TN. 2. James P. Ross or Russ, who died and left a widow and 2 children names, ages and residence unknown. 3. His parents moved to Middle Tennessee in 1826, and to Greene county, Missouri, in 1886, and settled three miles east of Springfield. In 1838 William went to Fort Smith, Arkansas, and then to St. Louis, Missouri, and back to Springfield. In 1849 he again went to St. Louis where he remained three years and then came back to Springfield, where he has been actively engaged in business ever since. He was one of the company that built the Metropolitan hotel, and has also built several large stores upon the square. He has been city treasurer for two terms, and has always been prominently identified with the building interests of Springfield. Mr. Massey was married in 1845, to Miss Almarinda C., daughter of Joseph Rountree. That marriage was blest with seven children, four sons and three daughters. His first wife dying, he married Miss Laura Oustott,! by whom he had one son and one daughter. His father was born in Ireland, and came to the United States when a child. During the Indian wars he was captain of a company. His wife died in 1837, and he died in 1864. They had nine children, but three of whom are now living, viz.: Mrs. McAdams, Mrs. Z. M. Massey married Almarinda Rountree (Springfield Mo) After her death William married my great great grandmother Laura Onstott. One of Willi8am's and Almarinda's daughters, Veda, married Laura's brother John Hale Onstott. It's interesting for me to know that John H. Onstott was brother to Laura. WILLIAM McADAMS. The subject of this notice is the son of William and Gabella (Barnes) McAdams, and was born in 1815 in county Down, Ireland. His parents emigrated to America when young William was about nine years old, and settled in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. His mother died soon after, and his father in 1839. William, jr., our subject learned the saddler's and harness-maker's trade in Pittsburg, serving five years at the business. In 1840 he came to the new and growing West and settled down permanently in Springfield, Missouri. Here he opened a shop for the manufacture and repairing of saddles and harness, and has been in the business for over forty-two years. He had the first shop of the kind in Springfield, and probably in Greene county. He built up a large and lucrative business, and wishing to retire, he sold out his stock of goods to Smalstig & Co. Mr. McAdams was elected county treasurer of Greene county in 1858, and served until 1864. He was married October 31, 184! 1, to Miss Margaret Massey, daughter of James Massey. By this union they have been blest with eight children, five boys and three girls, of whom two boys and two girls are now living. Mr. McAdams has been a member of the city council several terms. He is a member of United Lodge, No. 52 A.F. and A.M., and Royal Arch Chapter, No. 15. He is secretary of both the lodge and chapter. Himself and wife are members of the M. E. church south. He is one of Greene's landmarks, and is regarded as an upright Christian gentleman History of the County from April, 1865 to 1870 KILLING OF PERRY LEWIS BY SAMUEL MASSEY. On the night of March 27, in Springfield, a young man named Perry Lewis was shot through the heart by Samuel Massey and instantly killed. It was stated that Massey, Lewis, John Gott, and Joseph Danforth, being friends and associates, were "on a spree," and about 11 o'clock at night went to a brothel in the northwestern suburbs. There they met with a stage driver, named Green, and a quarrel soon sprang up between him on the one side and Massey and Lewis on the other. All three had drawn their coats to fight, when Massey drew a pistol and snapped it at Green. In making a second effort to fire Lewis caught the weapon to prevent the shooting and in attempting to wrest it from Massey's hands it was exploded, with the fatal result to Lewis. This was the substance of the testimony before the coroner's jury. WM. JONES ROUNTREE. This gentleman is the son of Almus L. and Dolina (Mitchel) Rountree, and was born October 17th, 1847, on the farm now owned by Z. M. Rountree, near Springfield, Missouri. He was retired by his grandfather upon the farm, and was educated at the public school of Springfield. At the age of seventeen he accepted a clerkship in the store of Massey, McAdams & Co., of Springfield, where he remained until March, 1865, when he enlisted in company F, 14th Missouri volunteers, U. S. A. He was mustered out at Leavenworth, Kansas, the same year, and returned to Springfield, where he attended school until 1867. He then engaged with Massey, McAdams & Co., and sold goods for them for eighteen months. In the fall of 1869 he went to California, and returned in 1870 and took a position as clerk in the St. Louis and San Francisco freight and ticket office, where he continued until 1873. In the spring of 1874 he went to Texas, and was chief clerk on the and Texas railroad. ! He was next appointed agent at Calveras, Texas, where he remained until 1876. He returned to Springfield in the fall of that year, but soon afterwards went to Joplin, Missouri, where he sold groceries for nine months, when he returned to this city and took the position of conductor on the popular Gulf railroad. Mr. Rountree is a member of the I. O. O. F., K.T. and Brotherhood of Railway Conductors. He was married September 15th, 1876, to Miss Fannie E. Massey. They have three children viz.: Frank M., John F. and Etta. The Rountrees are some of Greene's earliest and best settlers. NEWTON M. ROUNTREE. Mr. Rountree is the son of Z. M. and Elizabeth (Massey) Rountree, and was born Nov. 5th, 1838, on his father's farm three miles northeast of Springfield, Missouri. He was educated in the county, and in 1800 entered the store of Massey & McAdams, as clerk, and in 1864 became a partner in the house and so remained until 1869. From 1869 to 1871 he was of the firm of Keet, Massey & Co., and when the firm reorganized in 1871, it became Keet, Rountree & Co., and so continues. Mr. Rountree was married in 1867 to Miss Grabella, daughter of Hon. Charles Haden, of this county. Their marriage is blest with three sons and two daughters. Mrs. Rountree is a member of the Christian church. They are both of the pioneer families of the county, and none are more honorable or more highly respected in Greene county. Janet

I am doing some research for my neighbor, Ann (Cash) Graham. We are looking for information on the ancestors of Telia A. (possibly Arlillian) MASSEY born August 1868 in Indiana. She married Thomas C. CASH born October 1862 in Indiana. They had two sons: Murrill Allen born June 22, 1896 in Guthrie, Oklahoma and Wilbur M. born about 1904 in Indiana. We believe that Telia’s parents may have been Thomas MASSEY born about 1833 in North Carolina and Mary Unknown born about 1845 in Indiana. According to the 1870 Federal census they were living in Owensville, Montgomery, Indiana with the following children: William age 3 born in Indiana Baby age 1 born in Indiana Telia may have been a twin or may have had a sister named Velia. James Massey's estate was settled in Lincoln County, Tennesse. James might lived in Giles County, Tennesee the next county. This Massey family is link to my Halbert family of Lincoln County, Tennesse. I found some things but not a lot. James wife is unknown but his children are This case was subpoenaed Oct. 7, 1885. The deposition is dated Feb. 1, 1887. James Massey died in LCT about 1839 or 1840. Leaving NO WIDOW, but 7 children: 1. Martha Smith m'd David Smith 2. Sarah Dunlap 3. Jane Brown 4. James Massey 5. Ephraim Massey 6. Robert Massey 7. Margaret Patrick All of whom are now dead. Martha Smith left 4 daughters: 1. Margaret Weaver who died leaving 2 children: 1. Dona who married Jeff Ross or Russ in Marshall Co., TN and 2 Emmet whose residence is unknown. 2. Elizabeth Ross or Russ, who died leaving 3 children: 1. Jeff Ross or Russ of Marshall Co., TN. 2. James P. Ross or Russ, who died and left a widow and 2 children names, ages and residence unknown. 3. Tabitha Blakemore who lives in Coffee Co., TN 3. Sallie who died leaving a dau. Halbert knows nothing else of them. Eliphalih (sic) is living, residence unknown. Patrick lives in Texas. Gideon lives in New York. Mariah married Van Pillow and lives in Marshall Co., TN (I can not find Margaret) Margaret Patrick died leaving children but names, ages and residence are unknown. (I can find Robert) Robert Massey died in Missouri leaving no issue and no will so far as complainant knows. As far as Martha V. Halbert knows the estate of James Massey has been long since settled. No knowledge of claims against said estate. The only property left is a tract of land in the 17th district ling in Lincoln Co., TN. Does anyone know this family? Janet
