Hi Folks, I've been researching my late husband's line of Masseys and I don't believe anyone on this list has posted a connection to this line. I believe his first ancestor in America was Samuel Massey, a Quaker, born in Ireland between 1666 and 1670, emigrated from County Cork, Ireland, to Philadelphia PA in 1710, died about 20 Sept. 1720 in Philadelphia County, Province of Pennsylvania. However, I have not confirmed the link through Samuel's line to the Thomas Massey known to be in our line as below. I have named this line of descendancy "the Philadelphia line." Although our line has been in MD since 1870, there is no known link connecting to the Masseys of Kent County MD nor have I been able to find a link to the Thomas Massey line of Chester County PA, although I suspect an earlier generational link between that Thomas and Samuel who were both Irish Quakers. My son has volunteered to participate with a DNA test which I hope to arrange sometime in the near future and that may answer some questions. Good Morning Everyone, My Massy/Massey mystery is my gg grandmother. Nancy E. Massy/Massey was born abt 1828 in either NC or SC She married Jacob Ivester - date and place not known. Their family is listed on the 1850 Walker Co., Georgia Census as: Jacob Ivester - 30 - farmer - NC Nancy - 24 - not given but listed as either SC or NC in later census John - 5 - Ga Monroe - 3 - Ga Reuben - 1 - Ga Elizabeth - 1 - Ga In 1860 they are in Craighead Co., Arkansas and 1870 & 1880 they are in Stoddard Co., Missouri. So far I have identified a total of 9 children for them. I am hunting the name of Nancy's parents. The 1850 census of Walker Co., Ga also lists these folks: Mary Massey, age 18 living with Stephen Russell family John Massey, age 55, and family Ansel Massey, age 47 and family Clem Massy, age 48 and family Starling Massy, age 25 and family Warren Massey, age 63 and family Richard Massy, age 33 and family Wilson Massy, age 30 and family James Massey, age 36 and family I have been looking at the Ansel Massey family as a possibility. Ansel named a son Reuben and my Nancy and Jacob named a son Reuben. The 1830 census of Pickens Co., SC does show Ansel with a daughter b. 1825-1830 which would fit Nancy. However, all this is just guessing. Would really appreciate any help on this family. Thanks so much - Emma

Happy New Year to all. I am glad to see a roll call for the Massey lines and look forward to a productive year for us all. Most of my information was not researched or proven by me but contributed by Art Massey (a cousin) so a big thanks to him. Hello List Here is what little I know about my Masseys hopefully someone out there may recognize this family. My great great grandmother was Nancy E Massey, maiden name unknown. Nancy was born in 1825 in Tenn, she was married to William Massey, he was born in 1830 in Tenn. Here is where it gets tricky, I have found them in a census in Ark in 1870 with my great grandmother Eliza Jane Massey who was born in 1851 and married my great grandfather Henry Cameron in 1870, they were married but they are each in their parents home in the 1870 census. I have not been able to find out what happened to William and Nancy, have not found William after the 1870 census, but did find Nancy living in home of Henry and Eliza Jane Massey Cameron in the 1900 census in Okla, she is listed as a widow in that census and Eliza is her only living child at that time. Nancy is lost after the 1900 census as I cannot find her listed after that, and no death record, etc. They were in Lawerence and Randolph Counties in Ark, in 1860, 1870 and possibly Madison County, Ark, after that, in 1900 they were in Latimer County, Okla. ============================== Search Family and Local Histories for stories about your family and the areas they lived. Some of this data is speculative but of great interest and significance is the fact that a Massey man descended from Warren's brother, John, has done the Massey DNA test and his results are almost identical with those of the Massey testors whose ancestors have been traced to Surry and Prince George Cos., VA indicating this Warren, although in Henry Co., VA, is very closely related to the other line - verifying that Judge Massey placed your line correctly, although he may have got a few given names wrong. Thank you, Kemis. Hopefully you can get a dialogue going. My gr grandfather was Joseph Massey, born 1808 Buncombe Co. NC. The only fellow who fit the context to be Joseph's father was Avery Massey who was in Greenville Dist. SC in 1800, Buncombe Co. NC in the 1810 census and then about 1820 he is in a military Dist in Franklin Co. GA. Later there is a land record giving the Orphans of Avary Massey a drawing. Sure would like to prove or disprove a connection. In the DNA Massey testing, my brother shows up only one marker out of 25 different from James M. Massey whose seems to be linked to Maryland families. Would love to make the connection. Any help appreciated. Barbara Massey Ferrell
Kemis, It's great to have you as the Administrator of the Massey list. Thanks for your help in the past. It is good to know you are there for the many Massey reseachers as we "muddle" (at least in my case) along. Thank you! Wanda Massey Underwood
Hi ya'll, Since it's a new year, let's start it out with a Roll Call. If you see someone who may have a cousin, tell them. We can only learn if each of us shares their findings. If the cemeteries are located in restricted areas, the first step is to make a phone call to the Range Division. Then, that office checks the calendar to see when the area will be free and clear from military exercises. Range Division, Directorate of Training at (706) 545-3474 At that point, a person from the Range Division will call you and set up a time and meeting place and the Contact will go with you to visit the cemetery. Don't just show up at the office, planning to go see the cemetery without advance scheduling. Visits MUST be cleared with the proper authorities first and put on the calendar. Benning - mainly in Chattahoochee County. I have that info if anyone is interested. I have "History of Chattahoochee County, Georgia" by N.K. Rogers. This book is mainly a list of marriage, tax, Civil War soldiers, school and church records. In most cases all it gives you is the date and name, you would have to contact Chattahoochee County for copies of the records. I also have "Family Records Mississippi Revolutionary Soldiers" by Alice Tracy Welch, MISS Society D.A.R. It only has an Elizabeth MASSEY m Lazarus REEVES nr Petersburg, VA. Elizabeth was dau of Thomas MASSEY b. c 1756 d. after 1827. The other record in the book was where a David MASSIE m Margaret WILLS - descendant of a Thomas HOLDEN, SR. I purchased the book at a flea market for $5 and have offered to do look-ups for those researching lines in MS. I didn't find any of my or my hubbies lines, but have helped others to find clues to theirs. Hopefully, I haven't overwhelmed anyone with my limited info and do encourage you to share your MASSEY info. Whether it be the line that you found or any brick walls you can't scale. This is the place to share and ask for help. BTW, a quiet list doesn't help any of us. Happy New Year List, Let me introduce myself. My name is Kemis (SONGER) MASSEY. I am the new list administrator for [email protected] There shouldn't be any changes from the old list administrator, as my rules are very simple. 1.. Have fun locating your MASSEY ancestors 2.. Help others if you have the information, because I sure don't know it all. I'm still looking for all of my hubbies MASSEY's. 3.. NO FLAMING - My Mama says if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. I'll handle it off-list. So if you have a problem with someone, email me at [email protected] I'll handle the problem. 4.. Rootsweb.com has been nice enough to give us the email lists and many websites, please don't sell the info that you receive from others. They were nice enough to share with you. If you want to sell something, do your own research and sell it. Cause if you use others info to sell, you are stealing from all of us. 5.. Please respect the living and don't post their info here, without their permission. Fraud is to easy and you never know who might be "lurking" to find info for that purpose. 1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to [email protected] that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text. 2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to [email protected] 3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to [email protected] to discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" to [email protected] to start receiving digests. 4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to [email protected] It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both.
