    1. [MARYLAND-ROOTS] Re: Transported 1761
    2. Ralph Taylor
    3. Hello Marg, I don't have specific information, but will make a guess about the fate of you 4GGF, William MASON. If he was convicted and subsequently transported, his status in Maryland was probably like that of the less fortunate indentured servants -- most of whom did not survive the (typically, seven) years of their indentures. Likely, his contract would have been purchased by a wealthy planter and he would have been put to work clearing land for raising tobacco. -rt_/) > On March 7, 2019 at 5:44 PM Margaret <muntzmj@gmail.com> wrote: > Hi > May I ask if anyone can point me in the right direction to find out what > happened to my 4x Grt grandfather, William MASON, after he arrived in > America. > > In 1761 he was committed to be transported having been found guilt of theft > at the Old Bailey, London. 3. Hi May I ask if anyone can point me in the right direction to find out what happened to my 4x Grt grandfather, William MASON, after he arrived in America. In 1761 he was committed to be transported having been found guilt of theft at the Old Bailey, London. UK He may have been on the Maryland Packet Ship in September 1761 but cannot find anything else. I do not have a birth for him but in London he was a Cordwainer and he left behind a wife (Mary Ann born circa 1715) and a son George Henry. They had married in London 1746. I have all the English information for Mary Ann and George Henry, but have nothing on William. Mary Ann eventually remarried in 1781 and was described as a "widow". Many thanks Marg (NSW", Australia)

    1. [MARYLAND-ROOTS] Abraham TAYLOR (~1660? ? - 1719 Baltimore Co, MD) -- Origin?
    2. Ralph Taylor via
    3. I'm searching for the origins of Abraham TAYLOR who arrived in Gunpowder Hundred, St. John's Parish of Baltimore County in or before 1694. I would appreciate any information or suggestions as to research approaches. Abraham TAYLOR seems to have been in his mid-thirties on arriving in Gunpowder; he was married and had three children ages 5 to 9 (Abraham, John & Lettice). His wife Jane's maiden name is believed to be COURKIN because Abraham later gifted land to a John COURKIN; a likely explanation is that Courkin was his brother-in-law. He was not named on Baltimore County's 1692 or 1694 tax lists. The 1695 tax list shows two other tithables in his household: Robert TAYLOR and Mark SWIFT. Robert may have been a brother or his father. SWIFT may have been a close friend; Abraham would later become guardian of SWIFT's son, also named Mark SWIFT. A deed for land he purchased in 1694 describes him as "a blacksmith of Kent County" but I've not found a record of him there. Page 360, items 10 & 11 of the Baltimore County Granttes Index show him purchasing 100 acres of Ayres Addition and 100 acres of Wainsworth from a John DEVGHE. Item 12 shows a bond between him and Deveghe, with Abraham as grantee. He also made later land purchases. In 1695, he was named as one of six vestrymen for St. John's Parish. He spent the rest of his life there; his will was made 10 Jul 1719 and proved 6 Aug 1719. The overall picture is that Abraham TAYLOR was sufficiently well off in 1694 to acquire a fair amount of land and to be accepted as a leader in the community. This suggests that he was not a recent immigrant to America. BTW, he is NOT Lawrence TAYLOR of Goodspeed Plantation, Spesutia Hundred, St. George's Parish, Baltimore County. The two have often been confabulated but were completely separate and apparently unrelated men. Thank you in advance. -rt_/)
