Hi Jim, Thank you for your prompt response to my listing re the above. Families did tend to name their offspring after the older members of the family and so the same Christian names appear continually through the generations. I have recently gotten in touch with some younger cousins who still live in County Monaghan and when they say that two of the Martin men emigrated to America, they are not specific as to region etc. I will outline my connection as I know of it so far and I believe there is a double connection in the family so it will take a little sorting out. My gtgrandfather was John MARTIN (b. 1840 at Ballyblogh, Co. Monaghan, Ireland) who married (on 01/06/1866 in Newbliss Presbyterian Church), Matilda Jane (Tillie) SCHOLES (b. 1839 at Killyfuddy, Co. Monaghan, Ireland). John and Matilda had 6 children that I know of: Margaret Jane, Elizabeth Ann (Lizzie), Un-named (probably still-born), William, Martha and John James (my grandfather). John MARTIN (b. 1840 at Ballyblogh) was the son of William MARTIN (farmer). The family moved to Rooskey, Newbliss, Co. Monaghan later. I do not, at this stage, know anything about William's wife or siblings. Descendants of William MARTIN still live at Rooskey, Newbliss, Co. Monaghan, Ireland. William MARTIN also had a daughter Margaret (b. 1842 cc at Rooskey, Newbliss, Co. Monaghan). Margaret married a James HALL (farmer from Edengoash, Co. Monaghan) on 11.03.1864 at the Church of Ireland, Killeevan, Co. Monaghan. Their daughter Sarah (b. 1867 at Edengoash) married John LEE of Gortgranard, Annalore, Clones, Co. Monaghan on 03.12.1889. John and Sarah LEE had a daughter Margaret Jane (Meta) LEE (b. 17.11.1890) who married John James MARTIN (b. 05.12.1880 at Rooskey, Newbliss, Co. Monaghan, Ireland.) John James and Meta MARTIN are my maternal grandparents. I am sure you will find this all terribly confusing but I will contact my cousins and put your MARTIN information to them and see what they come up with. Will keep in touch and thank you again for your contact - this is the only way we can all get to the information we need. I live about 120 klms. from Perth, Western Australia and have been here for 30 years, having emigrated from Northern Ireland. Kind regards, ElizabethGresty, Australia.
Dear Elizabeth: Thank you for your response and the information you provided. It appears we do NOT have a fit, as my John Martin married Mariah Garland, in Corbeg, at the Tyholland Parish Church, in 1868. Where is Ballyblogh, in Monaghan, relative to Monaghan Town? It sounds so mystical, like " Brigadoon " .
