I have a John Smalley, Jr. in my Martin line, mostly living in New Jersey. John, Jr. was born in Plymouth, MA (may have been Plymouth County) ca 1644 and died 1733 in Piscataway, NJ. He married Lydia Martin in 1676 in Piscataway, and they had 10 children. John Smalley (Sr) was born ca. 1615 in Devonshire, England, and married Ann Walden (b. 1616 Plymouth, MA). Both died in Piscataway. Lydia Martin was born ca. 1655 in New Hampshire, died 1765 in Woodbridge, NJ. She was a daughter of John Martin (b. 1620 England) and Esther 'Hester' Roberts (b. 1628 NH). They also both died in Piscataway. John and Esther are my 8th ggrandparents, through their son Joseph Martin and Sarah (Gibbs) Trotter. My grandfather Henry Hamilton's mother was the last Martin in my direct line. He has a Martin family tree showing quite a few of the Smalley's, descended from John and Lydia. To my knowledge none of my Martin's lived in Alabama, although some of the names match names in my database the ages are way off. But the name Smalley interested me because my Grandfather Aaron Martin 1860-1839 married Samantha Jane Smalley 1862-1928 on 11-20-1881 in Mercer County Missouri. Samantha was the daughter of William Henry and Sarah Moss Smalley and Granddaughter of Isaac and Emma Smalley. Aaron was the son of Nathan and Rhoda Martin and Grandson of William and Mariah Martin. This Martin family's route of migration was from Virginia>Kentucky>Illinois>Missouri>Kansas. The Smalley's migrated from Penn>Ohio>Missouri>Kansas. Do you see any possible relationship? I am interested in your sources for the deaths of John Smalley, Jr and wife Lydia Martin. I only had the date of Johns will and estate papers I believe to determine they died after 1731. My line is through John Smalley, Jr.s sister Mary who married John Snow. The death dates for Lydia are not confirmed, and after a brief check today, it appears that hers may be incorrect. My grandfather had a copy of the Martin family Bible, and from that, someone in the family produced a family tree. Unfortunately, they were missing the data on several generations, between Lydia and her siblings, and Joshua Martin (ca. 1752-1815). Joshua's son Samuel married Deborah Smalley, who was a descendant of Lydia and John Smalley, Jr. My grandfather's membership application to the NSSAR went as far back as Joshua Martin, a Private in the Middlesex County New Jersey Militia. The Martin family bible went further, but he documented only as far as his soldier, at least for the purpose of membership. The family tree was divided into an earlier section, called the "Martinsville Martins" and a later time frame, with the "Descendants of Aaron Coon Martin". My grandfather's mother was Maggie Martin, one of ten children of Aaron Coon Martin and Sarah Ann Hodge. Gary, I was interested in your relative Joshua Martin and wondered if you had any additional information on his parents and siblings. I'm a descendent of one Samuel Martin of Piscataway NJ who died in 1815, according to his last will and inventory. The LDS website indicates that this Samuel was born in 1743 to Mulford Martin and Rachel Ayers but other sources indicate that Mulford and Rachel had no children. I'm wondering if Samuel could be a brother of your Joshua. Any information that you have would be greatly appreciated.
