Martin. You, as I (and my two elderly aunts who've been working at this for 50 years) do, have a reference to James L. Martin's father's name being J. Mather Martin. I noticed a message from you asking about him. Did you ever receive a reply? Just today I saw a reference to a female Mather Martin in the 1880 census of Chester County, South Carolina. As South Carolina was the supposed birthplace of James L. Martin (per the 1850 census), I'm wondering if it would be worth exploring Chester County for earlier Martins.
