Ken, The website for the 1850 Census is: < http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvmarsha/marsh.htm >. There are ten Martin families listed, and I have been unable to discern if any are related to Benjamin Im thinking I need to go to Moundsville, WV, this summer. Wood County is a few counties south of Marshall County. Gosh, I wish I had better news for you about John: Both John (b~1842, Marshall Co WV) and James Martin (b~1840), siblings of Benjamin Martin (b.1816, PA), were casualties of the Civil War. They both mustered at Camp Delaware Ohio on 6 Aug 1862 into the 96th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry Company K. John (20 yrs old, 57, light complexion, blue eyes, brown hair) died 3 Jun 1863 of yellow fever after a long stay at a hospital in Lexington Kentucky, and is buried in the Lexington National Cemetery, grave #441. James (22 yrs old, 59, light complexion, blue eyes and light hair) died of yellow fever at Smiths Plantation Louisiana (before the battle of Vicksburg), after being wounded in battle of Chickasaw Bluffs or Ft. Hindman. All this info is from obtained military and pension records. When I ordered them I had hoped to find something about children of John or James, via the pension records, but neither married. I did find out that poor father Benjamin died of consumption 13 June 1866, and papers show that widow Mary Thompson Martin was still trying to obtain a pension from the government for her two sons deaths in 1892! She finally won a $12 per month mothers pension until she died 30 November 1901. Ordering the military records and pensions records sure made these ancestors come alive to us. It is so hard to research a surname like Martin (common) and then add to that a given name like Benjamin and John (that is even more common). Brickwalls are a part of the addiction, I guess! D. Martin Kenneth Martin <[email protected]> wrote:...OK.. I am VERY interested in some of the information you have on his children. Specifically, I want to know what you have on sibling John. Is his middle initial A? Was he born on Jan 20, 1853? John A. Martin is my ggrandfather and was a farmer in Wood County (near Parkersburg) West Virginia. If this fits, I would also like whatever information you have on the other siblings. Thanks very much in advance. FYI, John's son was Edward E, and his son was Charles S. (my father) If we have a match, I would LOVE to have the 1850 census information you have on them.
