Cathy, In 1850 Johnson Co., TN, there are Joseph and Ann Martin (indexed as Marter), ages 29 and 21, with Joseph born in England and Ann in TN. They have no children yet. Nearby is the family of David D. Stout, age 57, born in TN. In 1860 Johnson Co., TN, Ann Martin, age 30, is listed alone with her children - no husband in the home. Children are Mary E. - 7, John L. - 6, Sarah E. - 3, and Caroline - 1. In 1870 Johnson Co., TN, Ann has apparently remarried to the David D. Stout mentioned above. She is age 40, and he is age 79. Martin children are listed with her as Mary - 17, Emily - 13, and Caroline - 11. Also listed as Martins in the household are Daniel C. H. - 8, and Eliza, age 2, and are listed in order with the other 3 Martin children. If they really are Martins and children of Ann, then I have no idea where the father was at this time, however, Eliza is listed as a Stout in 1880. In 1880 Johnson Co., TN, Anna (51) and David Stout (89) are still alive and together. In the home are Eliza Stout, age 12, Abraham Stout, age 9, Robert Martin, age 18 (listed as stepson), Caroline Martin, age 21 (listed as stepdaughter), Mary E. Martin, age 3, (listed as step granddaughter), then David Stout, age 23 with his wife and child - Martha and Alex. Several homes away, John Martin, age 25, is listed as a nephew in the home of Albert Lowe. I have no idea who Robert Martin might be. Since John is listed separately, they are probably not the same person. I checked further on Robert in 1900 and 1910. In 1900 he is in Johnson Co., with wife Amanda. In 1910, they are in Sullivan Co., TN (listed as Robert H.) and reported to both be married for the first time, so he was not the husband of Caroline. Still in Sullivan Co., TN in 1920 with wife Sarah A. - probably Sarah Amanda. It appears that Joseph Martin died very early in Anna's marriage. It is probable that whoever provided the information about Ann's father at the time of her death simply did not remember his name since he had been dead since about 1858-59, or it could be that his full name was Joseph Robert Martin, or Robert Joseph Martin. There are several possibilities. In 1850 and 1860, there are no other Martins in Johnson Co., TN. In 1850, Joseph is the only Martin in all of Tennesee who was born in England. I find no hint of his family or siblings. Hope this helps a little. Mary Ellen married William Harvey Harrison on November 4, 1871. They lived in Campbell co. TN for over 30 years and moved to Bristol around 1914 to live near their children, Erby and Ollie. This information came from Edith Wilson Hutton's book, "John Ford and his Campbell co. Tn Descendants". I would be so thankful to find out more information about this Martin line. Cathy Lightfoot
