In reply to Barbara Samuels and RedFanJan...... I beg your most humble pardon. I just hate it when I make a fool of myself on the internet. I have had a momentary brain glitch and confused my generations. I did indeed chase William Harvey forever, but not your William Harvey. There is another Williiam H. often listed as William Harvey that was born within 10 years of my William Hawkins. I thought he was my guy forever, and I guess it just imprinted on my brain and I jumped to the conclusion that he was the one you were talking about. My William b. 1823 Tenn d.7-2-1893, is not the son of John and Isabell but, their grandson, the son of Lewis Hiram Martin (Brother to your William Harvey) and Alice (Alys) Bentley Martin. That would make MY William Hawkins, YOUR William Harvey's nephew and namesake. I too would love to find John and (Sarah) Isabella Martin as I have been looking for them for over thirty years. Jan, I know you know these people, as they are part of your family line as well. You were just too gracious to say I was an idiot. Jan and I have corresponded several times over the years as she is descended from another of William Harvey''s brothers and from John and Isabella. You should check out her very detailed website at edenmartin.com if you have not done so already. I am usually extremely careful what I post, so I apologize. I just hate being the source of misinformation! I have been out of town, or I would have sent this correction sooner. I apologize to anyone I have confused. As to John and Isabell, I have been thinking a lot about this, as no one seems to be able to find them. I have the civil war letters witten between Lewis Hiram and his sons that mention a Bailey. I now know that this was John Smith Bailey b. 1776 Pendelton District South Carolina d after 1856 or one of his sons. He was married to Alice (Alys) Bentley Martin's sister Mary. I have seen other posts about Bailey Martin but cannot seem to tie them together. I keep thinking that if we follow the collateral lines, Bailey, Scott, Bentley, and Montgomery( Lewis's son Phillip married Mary Montgomery, but the Montgomerys are tied to the Martins from the 1790's on down) we might find a clue. Alice(Alys)'s father was Jeremiah F. Bentley b. 1759 Amelia Co. Va d.5/31/1841 Wilkes Co. Georgia Buried at West Point Lawrenceberg Tn He lived in: Amelia Co VA 1785 Brunwick Co VA 1787 Union Co SC 1800-1807 Williamson Co Tn 1807-1818 Giles Co 1818 also Lawrence Co Tn1820-1842 Lawrence Co Tn 1821 Will Giles County Tn 1835 Revolutionary War Service Pension File 539192 He was the son of Samuel Bentley b.12/30/1719 North Fulham Parish Richmond Virginia d. 1793 Nottoway Co VA and Mary B.1720 d.?Lunenberg VA. Second marriage to Elizabeth VaughnB. 1740 VA d.1787 VA Samuel was the son of Daniel Bentley Jr b.1690 Raleigh Parrish Amelia Co Va d.1722 North Fulham County VA and Ann Bentley Daniel Bentley was the son of Daniel Bentley Sr. b. 1660 and Elizabeth Johnson John Martin was also a revolutionary soldier. In 1790 and 1792 he is listed as 'tithable' in the Kentucky Militia of Nelson County Kentucky. On the Nelson County tax rolls he is listed with one white male over 21 and one white male between 16-21, 2 horses, 9 cattle, no land. He is also there in 1793. The records are missing in 1794 and he is gone after that. He shows up again in 1797 near Washington Co. Ky(created from Nelson county in 1782). So very likely the same area or close. He is living near the Neeleys and Montgomerys at this time. A John Martin appears on the Logan County census in 1810. He appears on Baptist Church records 1809-1816 in Logan Kentucky. He is granted the right to perform marriages in 12/1805 County order book no 3 p.289. He organized Providence Baptist Church in Warren Co in 9/1804. Warren Co was created from Logan Co in 1796. This church was also known as Knob Creek church located 7 miles west of Rawling Green it was part of the "Great Revival" of 1799 Muddy River Church. It is mentioned in my civil war letters as the church the family attended. John Martin received land in payment for his revolutionary war service. He obtained a commissioners's certificate #2781 for a land grant on the Sinking Branch of the Muddy River including his improvements in October 5, 1798. This land was purchased pursuant to legislation that opened up the territory south of the Green River in Kentucky, providing that the applicants had a family and would settle on the land for at least a year before they were granted possession of the land. This places him in Kentucky by at least October of 1797. His daughter Jane married Charles Neeley there in September 1797. The land was surveyed in November of 1798.The grant was finally issued 12/2/1808. The land was sold early in1809. In two pieces, 170 acres to Thomas Martin or Morton and 29 acres to Gerald Hopkins.4-15-1809. John Martin is listed on the tax roles in Logan County (Formerly Lincoln Co ) Ky 1799-1817. Records are missing for 1818. He is gone by 1819. The fact that he sold this land to Thomas Martin (Morton) and he has no son named Thomas, makes me wonder if Thomas was his brother? I have seen Isabella Scott b. 1755-1756 listed as the daughter of Joseph (James) Scott and Anne (Nancy ) Mayo but cannot confirm that at all. Maybe working through the Scott line we could find something. I have most often seen John listed as John M Martin b.3/7/1755 d.1825 Bridgeport Township Lawrence County Illinois. I believe his death date and place are correct, but do not know if birthdates or his middle initial are really correct or just wishful thinking for some other researchers. I do know that he was the first teacher in Sand Prarie Lawrence Co. Illinois Section 18 in 1814. He arrived in Illinois and later in 1817 and was a Primitive Bapstist Minister again. If you have any other contradicting information please let me know. I have tried to document what I can, but much of this info comes from other sources and may not be accurate. Has any of this branch been DNA tested? I descend from the female line, and there are no surviving male members in my family, so no one in my family can help. I think the DNA test might really help us out. Or, my next step is to try to obtain John Martin's pension application records from NARA. This is what I did for William Hawkins Martin. This is where I finally documented his middle name his heirs and his movements for several years. Barbara and Jan if you have any ideas or any more information let me know. Maybe together, we can find them. Once again I really apologize for the confusion. Thoroughly chastened and humbled. Maggie
