Laura and Other Martin Listers working on these Martins: If any of you have been looking at this group of Martins I would appreciate it if you could read the following information and provide input or knowledge to determine the relationships or disprove any connection so that we can narrow the scope to those who are actually related. I have been looking at this group of Martins for the past week. The names of the Martins who were in Wayne Co. IL in 1830 and not in 1840 and the names of Martins in Searcy Co., AR in 1840 and not there in 1830 are: James B. Martin The date of birth of the James B. Martin on the 1840 Searcy Co, AR Census places is birth at 1770 - 1780. The James B. in 1830 Wayne Co., IL was born 1780 - 1790. This could be just a difference in the timing of the census, but what happened to James' family? The James B. 1830, Wayne, IL , had 2 females and 4 younger males living in the household. In 1840 Searcy Co., AR only one female who is the correct age to be on the previous census and the female of a wife's age is gone, but we have several very young children. It looks like a different family. A daughter and her family maybe??? I also find a James B. Martin born in VA about 1778 living with a young woman with a of young children in Izard Co., AR in 1850. I suppose it is a possibility that this is the same James B. Martin. Johnson Martin The Johnson living in Wayne Co., IL is listed with a young family, but with two females of a similar age. It may be possible that these were siblings of Johnson or his wife rather than his children because they do not show up in Searcy Co., AR. In fact the wife listed in 1840 is younger than either of the females listed on the 1830 Wayne, Co., IL census. It is also possible that these are two separate Johnson men. The Johnson Martin of Searcy Co., IL matches my Johnson who is in Scott Co., AR in 1850. His wife was a Reynolds and there is a Reynolds in Searcy Co., IL near Johnson. Owen Martin The Owen in Searcy Co. AR in 1840 does not appear to be the same Owen who is on the 1830 Census in Wayne Co., IL but looks like the Owen who was on the 1820 Census in Wayne Co., IL possibly the father of the Owen who is on the 1830 Wayne Co., IL Census) There is a John Martin living near the Owen Martin in 1840 Searcy Co., AR who may be his son. I I also see an Owen living with a young family and a John (born in IL) next door on the 1850 census of Hot Springs, AR which could possibly be these same Martins. Also on the same page is a Joseph Martin. With all the items that do not agree, I can't help but think these are the same Martins especially since looking for these people in the years 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850 I have not been able to locate them in other areas of the country. Laura, If your Abraham is the one listed in Wayne Co., IL in 1840, I have a problem with you listing him as the son of or ever living with James B. Martin (assuming that the James B. Martin in Wayne Co., and Searcy Co. are the same man). In 1820 there is one male in his household of an age to be Abraham or Johnson. In 1830 that person is no longer in the household of James B. Johnson is listed in Wayne, Co. Abraham is not listed separately, but appears in 1840 after James B and Johnson are gone. There is a Joseph Martin listed in 1820 who had a number of males listed in the household who could have been Abraham, but you still have the problem of the DNA testing if Joseph Martin is also the father or brother of Owen and James B. Martin which is still a question. I suppose Johnson could have been living in the household of Joseph and Abraham with James B. but he would have had be be elsewhere in 1830. If you look at the 1820 Census of Wayne Co, IL we find Joseph and a female both born before 1775 with 4 additional males and 4 additional females born between 1794 and 1820. All of the other Martins listed in that area were born betwen 1775 and 1804 and potentially children or younger siblings of Joseph. They are James B. Born between 1175-1794; Owen born between 1775-1794; Joseph born between 1794-1804; and Henry born between 1794-1804. I believe it would be helpful to form a Sub-Group of the Martins for this group to see if we can make sense of the connections unless, of course, there is someone out there who already has all the answers. :) Thanks to all for reading, Clarice Martin Wife of Jim>Jack>Jasper>Johnson>Johnson (they do like names that begin with "J") In a message dated 2/4/2007 4:20:59 PM Pacific Standard Time, elhzm@comcast.net writes: Hi! My info about JAMES B. MARTIN is that he came from Halifax Co, VA >TN>.Barren Co, KY>Wayne Co, IL>Searcy Co, AR. He died in Searcy Co, AR is my understanding. According to DNA testing which my Father participated in for us to try to trace our MARTIN line.................my ABRAHAM appears NOT to be genetically related to JAMES B. MARTIN of Halifax Co, VA. That seems strange to me; as they were in the SAME PLACE at the SAME TIME................but genetics fon't lie! SO- either my ABRAHAM was adopted; or THOUGHT he was JAMES B. MARTIN's bio son; or perhaps just RAISED by them: I DON'T KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Drives me NUTS!!!! At ANY rate.........if you look at the census of Wayne & White COunties, IL from 1820-1850; you will find all of those names and more in the MARTIN clan. Wish I could be more helpfl; but I can't even find a connection for my 3x GGrandfather ABRAHAM MARTIN after 9 years of searching!!!!!!!! Check out Wayne & White COunties, IL for LOTS more info regarding MARTINS- there were ALOT of them in/near/around there; that's for sure!!!!!!
