    2. Norman V. James
    3. Mac, My Susannah Martin was born c1649 and died 3-4-1726. She married William James 12-10-1677.Her parents were Joseph Martin b:c1629 and D:12-24-1704.Mother Mary Coggeshall B: 6-22-1628 D: 9-2-1707 I only show one daughter. I believe her parents were John Coggeshall ,married possibly to Mary Sturgis. Susannah and William James had 8 children. Joseph--William my ancestor --William died 1 yr.old--John--Benjamin--Content--Sarah--Rebeccah. William and Susannah were both interred in the Coddington Cemetery on Farewell St , Newport,R.I. Notes from FTM. SHE MARRIED AFTER WILLIAM DIED BUT WAS BURIED WITH WILLIAM AT CODDINGTON CEMETERY IN NEWPORT,R.I. THE GRAVESTONE IS STILL THERE. BURR MAR 7 1726.As you go thru the gate at the center of Farewell St,Newport,R.I.;her grave is off to the left near the top.I think William is buried in the same grave.Years ago both names were visible but in the 1990's kids wrecked the stones. I base my conclusion that Mary Coggeshall was her mother because in her fathers will dated 6-8-1704 and proved 2-12-1705,listed Daniel Coggeshall Kinsman sole Exec.which was also wit. by John Coggeshall, son of John C.,Dec.The will stated that Mary was an aunt to Daniel Coggeshall.Witnessed by John Cory,Jonathan Nichols and John Anthony.Daniel C. was the executor. Mary was listed in her grandmothers will as living on 4-16-1645. She was baptized at Castle Headingham,Kent,England 6-22-1628. Notes on William James BORN ABT. 1639-1650 ,NEWPORT R.I. DIED 1697 [VIT. REC.OF R.I. 1636-1850 ,NEWPORT P.102]] THIS ONE, I AM SURE OF, THAT HE IS OURS BUT HIS BIRTHDATE IS CONFUSED.SOME HISTORIANS CLAIM 1639 WHILE OTHERS CLAIM 1650. HIS PROFESSION IS LISTED AS "TANNER". MARRIED SUSANNAH MARTIN,[ ARNOLD OP.CIT.,NEWPORT P.41 ,DAUGHTER OF JOSEPH MARTIN IN NEWPORT DEC.10 1677. died 1697 (James Newell Arnold,Vital record of R.I.. 1636-1850,Newport,p.102 ) BURIED ON FAREWELL ST., CODDINGTON CEMETERY IN NEWPORT.[AUSTIN,OP.CIT. ] His stone read,"here lieth the body of William James,Sen'r who died on October 19,1697.He is in section 16 I and my wife Ernestine saw the actual graves but when we made a visit to Newport.I found they were later destroyed by kids. What a loss. There is also a William James who around the same time married Rebeckah Easton born c1686--died 3 2 1730 ,prob.related to Gov.Easton.She had a son William also buried in the Coddington Cem in sect 36--died 4-21-1711 in his 7th month. There is also buried there other Eastons,John,James and others. I suspect our William and this William may have been cousins, which further makes me believe that our William's father was the William who was expelled from Salem Mass with Roger Williams, finally settling in Portsmouth,R.I.It would be logical that our Williams brother would honor his 1st born male with the name William.I don't know the name of this William's father. THEY HAD 4 SONS,WILL DATED 10 19 1697 , WHO THEY GAVE 90 ACRES EACH, OF LAND IN WESTERLY R.I. AND KINGSTON,R.I. SONS NAMES WERE; JOSEPH, A TANNER----JOHN, A CORDWAINER----WILLIAM, A BLACKSMITH AND BENJAMIN ?,THIS MAN IS HARD TO PROVE AS THE RECORDS WERE BURNED,however a Benjamin James sold 100 acres of land in Kingstown, which was bounded on the West by land owned by William James.. WILLIAM JAMES 2 WAS MADE A FREEMAN IN NEWPORT ON MAY 4,1675 [GENE.DICT.OF R.I. 1887] P.111 WILL DATED OCT.19,1697 FREEMAN MAY 4,1675. {John Osborne Austin"The Genealogical dict. of Rhode Island ,1887 p 111 } THERE WAS A BENJAMIN JAMES [REP.MEN & OLD FAM.OF R.I. 1908.3:1640 ] WHO CAME FROM ENGLAND IN 1665 AND SETTLED ON PRUDENCE ISLAND IN NARRAGANSETT BAY.HE COULD HAVE BEEN A BROTHER OR COUSIN OF OUR WILLIAM AS THERE WERE ALLOT OF BENJAMIN'S NAMED IN DESCENDENT GENERATIONS.SEE REPRESENTATIVE MEN AND OLD FAMILIES IN RHODE ISLAND,1908 3:1640;HOWARD K.JAMES THE DESCENDENTS OF BENJAMIN JAMES OF NARRAGANSETT 1665,1920. WILLIAM JAMES,TANNER,BY A DEED DATED DEC.1696. JOSEPH MARTIN CONVEYED TO HIS SON IN LAW AND DAUGHTER SUSANNAH,FOR LOVE AND AFFECTION,60 ACRES OF LAND WITH DWELLING HOUSE AND BARN IN PORTSMOUTH R.I.,BOUNDED EAST BY A HIGHWAY,WEST BY LAND OF THOMAS NICHOLS,AND NORTH BY LAND OF JOHN CORY{PORTSMOUTH DEEDS 1:389} .HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS AND WAS COMMISSIONED TO FENCE IN THE CODDINGTON CEMETERY OF GOV. WILLIAM CODDINGTON, WHERE HE WAS ALSO BURIED AND HAD A TOMBSTONE ADORNED WITH A HOODED HEAD WHICH WAS COMMON AND SIGNIFIED THE LONG WAIT BETWEEN DEATH AND RESURRECTION.THE WORK STARTED 11 1688 AND FINISHED 8-6-1689.ON 8-20-1696 HE AND JOHN EASTON WERE AUTHORIZED TO REPAIR AND PAINT THE MEETINGHOUSE HALL.THEY WERE PAID 3 POUNDS-10 SHILLING FOR THE WORK. HE OWNED LAND IN PORTSMOUTH,NEWPORT AND NARRAGANSETT. BY DEED HE WAS WILLED 60 ACRES OF LAND IN PORTSMOUTH BY HIS FATHER IN LAW,JOSEPH MARTIN.THE LAND WAS BORDERED BY LAND OF JOHN CORY AND THOMAS NICHOLS.(PORTSMOUTH DEEDS 1:389 ) THIS WILLIAM LEFT 360 ACRES OF LAND TO 4 OF HIS SONS ,EACH GETTING 90 ACRES.THE LAND WAS IN KINGSTON AND WESTERLY ACROSS THE NARRAGANSETT BAY.( North Kingston,or.I. Land Avid.,3:145-150 ) THERE IS A NEW RESEARCH ARTICLE ON ,THE FAMILY OF WILLIAM AND SUSANNAH (martin) JAMES OF PORTSMOUTH AND NEWPORT R.I. CALLED NEW DISCOVERIES.IT WAS WRITTEN BY MARYA MYERS AND DONALD W. JAMES,JR.PUBLISHED IN THE N.E.H G REGISTER OCT.1993. THEY HAD DISCOVERED THAT SUSANNAH'S MOTHER MARY MARTIN WAS THE DAUGHTER OF JOHN COGGESHALL,WHO LIVED NEXT DOOR TO ANNE HUTCHINSON,WHO WAS THE ONLY WOMAN TO FOUND A TOWN ,PORTSMOUTH,R.I., IN THE MASS. BAY COLONY DURING THE GREAT RELIGIOUS DISAGREEMENTS OF THOSE TIMES.COGGESHALL MOVED WITH HIS FAMILY AND WILLIAM CODDINGTON AND OTHERS TO THE NEW SETTLEMENT AT PORTSMOUTH,R.I.HE LATER BECAME ONE OF THE NINE FOUNDERS OF NEWPORT,AND IN 1647 WAS ELECTED THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE COLONY OF RHODE ISLAND. NOW OUR WILLIAM HAVING MARRIED SUSANNAH MARTIN,WHOSE PARENTS LIVED NEXT DOOR IN THE MASS.BAY COLONY,MAY HAVE BEEN BORN THERE AND NOT NEWPORT AS IS COMMONLY SUPPOSED.HE MAY HAVE MARRIED IN NEWPORT AFTER HE LEFT MASS.SUSANNAH'S MOTHER WAS A COGGESHALL,BUT MARRIED A MARTIN. AT THE NEWPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY THERE IS A COPY OF THE COGGESHALL FAMILY HISTORY,WHICH GOES BACK TO THE 14 TH CENTURY. I have included all these notes in the hope that I can find relatives who descend from the same family. Norman V.
