Hi cuzzie! OK , it IS complicated because this family named every generation the same names just to make us crazy. Let's see if we can sort this out. I am going to color code this so it is easier to follow. Lewis Hiram Martin and Ales Bentley Martin were also my GGGG parents. The Alice Perkins you are refering to (the one in the will) is a sibling of all the other heirs. She is my GGG aunt. She is the DAUGHTER of Ales Bentley Martin, who was married to Lewis Hiram Martin. Ales Bentley Martin was the mother of all of the heirs listed in this will except Elizabeth Gramling. The Alice in this will was named Alice M. Martin. She was married first to John W. Perkins b.1819, and second to Robert S. Stout b. 1828. Her niece, Mary Jane Martin b. 1861 (daughter of Phillip Wesley Martin b.9/15/1834 and Nancy Jane Hammonds b. c.1840) married a Robert Samuel Stout b.12/1860. So don't confuse the Robert Stouts. I am not sure what the connection is between Henry Gramling and the Martin Family. I do know that Ales Bentley Martin's mother was named Catherine Muck. So I am assuming that the Anthony Muck listed at the bottom of this will is related to her. Obviously Henry Gramling is VERY closely related to this family. I had never seen this will before now, but the Gramling name has always been attached to these two Alices. I have several letters written by Ales Bentley to members of the Bentley family and to her sister Lucrecy (Lucretia) Bentley Lucur/Luker, and to her brother, Richard Bentley and to a L.M. Bentley. The Bentley Family is highly intermarried with the Hammonds/Hammack Family which ties back to the Nancy Jane Hammonds (above ) married to her son Phillip. I also have letters written to her and Lewis, and to her daughter Alice during the civil war. They identify all Alice's siblings and most of their spouses, Sarah A. Martin married first to Crozier England and second to Richard Bray, John Lewis Martin married to Philandia Couch/Crouch, William Hawkins/Hiram Martin married first to Hannah Pettit and second to Martha Amanda McKown/McQuown/McKuen, Lydia Martin married to John Pettit, Jeremiah Bellastin Martin (named after Jeremiah Bentley, his grandfather and Ales Bentley's father) married to Rachel McKinney), Phillip Wesley Martin married to Nancy Jane Hammonds (she later married a man named Aaron Standturf/Standefur), Zinah Martin married to a Bentley (George do you know which one?), Nancy B Martin and her sister Isabella were both married to Joseph Pettit (Bother of Hannah Pettit above, who was married to William Martin), Ursula Martin married to Andrew L. Thompson, and Lewis Hyrum Martin married to Mary Barzilla Vanlandingham, as well as Ales's other sister Sally ( Sarah) Bentley. So, I feel very confident that we have Ales Bentley Martin's maiden name firmly established. Zinah married into the Bentley family just as her brother Lewis did and Isabella, Nancy and William married a brother and sister in the Pettit family. No wonder we are all confused! OK, get ready for TOTAL fantasy here........... Just trying to make the will fit........ According to my records, Lewis Martin died in1872, Ales Bentley Martin died in 1879. (Are these dates correct?) Could Ales have re-married for a third time to Henry Gramling? That would make Alice Martin Perkins Henry Gramling's step daughter, and Ales Bentley Martin would become Ales Bentley Martin Gramling. Then Ales dies and Henry remarries Mary. Maybe this would explain the attachment of the Gramling name to these two women named Alice/Ales/Alys. The will was recorded in 1872. When did Henry Gramling die? This is just TOTAL conjecture and of course there is no proof....... George do you have anything to add? What do you think? OK Cuzs, I question "I do know that Ales Bentley Martin's mother was named Catherine Muck. So I am assuming that the Anthony Muck listed at the bottom of this will is related to her." "NANCY" named as Jeremiah's wife on SC dowers c1800 -1807. I have no support for the "Caty Muck" marriage doc. to prove our Jeremiah b'59 is the groom. What do you have? If that him, he married at least 4 times! The younger Jeremiah m Zinah Martin is probably another Grandchild of Jeremiah through his son John. In 1835 @ age 75, JB names 7 living children. Q --- How many did he bury? Problems that we have with IDing Bentleys is: Jeremiah's sister was having bastard sons 2+? bc1780 and there is the Bentley group (LeBruceys) in North AL c1820s that is tied somehow to JB, but HOW? And the John Bentley who is a apparently good old JB's son, if his ages c1850-1860 are correct, was sired by JB b'59 when he was 14/15...... before joining the RW on 8/28/77..... or marrying Caty in 1792. JB's widow was "Hannah" bc1775. I think "Nancy" was this 1818 wife in Giles TN, bc1761 & dc1819 TN.
