Martin, not Z. Martin or Zadoc Martin Some of the ages seem to bounce around, especially for Rebecca, Mary, and John. Mary E. Martin’s pension papers said she was born 19 March 1840 in Bedford County, TN. Coffee County, TN was formed from part of Bedford in 1840. John’s 1900 census record says his birth date is March 1844. I tried to get a death certificate for him, but none was available. His gravestone only gives a death date. His estate papers state he died on 15 March 1924 in Leota, Howell County, MO. Rebecca’s age seems to waver from 1810-1820 to 1812 to 1822 to 1824 back to 1822. As for the three Martin boys listed right after Eleanor in the 1850 Hopkins County census, may be Zadoc’s nephews or his younger brothers. The likelihood that they are Zadoc’s children is just not possible unless he started having kids when he was 15. Plus there are two living children named William. We are not sure that Eleanor and Rebecca are the same person. A descendant of John M. Martin's group told us that John and his younger brother, Robert E. Lee Martin were half brothers. That would make Mary E. Martin who was born before John a half sister to Lee Martin. If Eleanor and Rebecca are one in the same, then maybe the ages were just given wrong in the 1850 and 1860 census records. If they are two separate wives, with Eleanor being the first wife and Rebecca the second, then the half-brother information would be correct. We know for certain that Rebecca is the mother from Thomas Josephus Martin on down. I guess it is possible that Eleanor and Rebecca were sisters since both were born in SC. The ages are a little off for the children, but the birth states are correct. Lafayette, I think, should have been around 9-10, not 6. Oldest son, Andrew J. Martin, is missing from this census. I did find one Andrew J. Martin, age 21, born in Texas (estimated birth year about 1849) in the 1870 Census for Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas, Horsehead Twp. entered as farm labor for Jesse M. and Isabella Marshall.
