    3. Mattie can also be a nickname for Matilda. And, oddly enough, a common nickname for Martha in the early 1800s was Patsy. I would like to know why the M names so often had P nicknames (Martha>Patsy, Mary>Polly, Margaret>Peggy). Beverly P.S. What if it was actually Maddie, for Madeline or the like?
