    1. [MARTIN-L] Re: Martin Martin of New Kent County, VA
    2. Martin Martin is my 7th great grandfather: >From Martin Family Quarterly Vol. XII #1 May, 1986 pages 13 - 15 MARTIN MARTIN OF NEW KENT CO.. VA. Martin Martin was born before 1678 and died in the 1730's. He owned land in New Kent Co., Va. In 1689 as did Henry Martin, Thomas Martin and William Martin. In 1698, William Martin, John Martin, Martin Martin and Thomas Martin, among others, were to clear roads in St. Peter's Parish, Va.2 There Is no other mention In St. Peter's Parish Vestry book for Martin Martin after 1698. Quit rents In New Kent Co., Va. In 1704: James Martin, 100 act; John Martin, 400 ac; Martin Martin, 150 act; Thomas Martin, 100 act; and William Martin, 230 ac. The St. Peter's Parish Register Includes the marriage of Martin Martin to Sarah Hlx, 10 Feb. 1698/9. The following children were baptized In St. Peter's Parish for Martin Martin: Ames..a a dau. of Martin Martin bapt. 6th April 1706 Anne dau. of Martin & Sarah Martin bapt. Aug ye 9th 170. Valentine son of Martin Martin Baptised June ye 18th 1710 ten year gap Thomas son of Meirtin Martyn born June 4 1720 six year gap Lucy ye Daugh of Martin Martin born Aug 20th 1726 It is possible, but not probable, that the above five children belong to one man. Since county records for New Kent Co. no longer exist for this time period there are many things about Martin Martin that will never be known. Martin Martin patented 358 acres of new land In Hencico Co., Va., south side James River and on west side of Fine Creek; on Jos. Woodson's land, 24 March 1725, 40 shillings.4 On 28 Sept. 1730. Henry Vanderhood patented 400 acres of new land In Goochland Co., south side James River, near Mr. Stoaner's land, near Flne Creek, add. Martin Martin and Watkins' land, 40 shillings.5 Henry Vanderhood sold this 400 acres, 16 Nov. 1731, Goochland Co., to Daniel Stoner, bounded by Stoner, Martin Martin, Watkins. Also, on 28 Sept. 1730, Stephen Woodson, patented 358 acres of lapsed land In Goochland Co., south side James River, west side of Fine Creek, add. Jos. Woodson, granted Martin Martin, 24 March 1725, on condition of seating, 40 shillings. Stephen Woodson, of St. James Parish, made his will, 14 Jan. 1735, proved 20 July 1736, Goochland Co., Va. Woodson made a bequest of 50 shillings to Martin Martin, late of New Kent. The 50 shillings presumably had something to do with the 358 acres of land mentioned above. Stephen Woodson's will named his brothers, John and Josias Woodson; wife, Elizabeth; and children, Matthew and Elizabeth Woodson. Stephen's widow, Elizabeth, remarried to Charles Bates before 1754. Stephen Woodson's daughter, Elizabeth, married Alexander Trent. The Goochland Co. marriage bond Is dated I Jan. 1753, consent was given by her guardian, Charles Retest The bond stated she was the dau. of Stephen Woodson, deed. Stephen Woodson's 1735 will stated Martin Martin was late of New Kent, but It didn't say he was deceased. No other record for Martin Martin can be found after his patent on Fine Creek In Goochland Co., 1725-1730, however. It appears that Martin Martin died sometime In the 1730's. There was also a Martin Martin living in Henrico Co. by 1734. He was an adjoining landowner when Edmund Allen sold 180 acres to Joseph Mayo. This land was bounded on the east by Thomas Matthews, on the south by Martin Martin, on the west By Richard Woodson and on the north by the Chickahominy ~Swamp.'U Martin Martin was still living there, 6 March 17371 and as late as 1760 was living adjoining the Allen family. Valentine Martin Sr. b. c. 1710 VA m. c. 1730 to Jane Bridgewater Thomas b. 04 June 1720 Lucy b. 20 Aug 1726 This was given to me by another researcher and I'm not sure of the dates of birth and if those children were twins? There is a will of Martin Martin on the internet. I can't tell you where right now. According to some researchers, Valentine Martin married Jane Bridgewater. Their son, Valentine, married Ann Scott. Valentine Martin (sometime listed as William Valentine) who married Nancy (sometime listed as Nancy Ann Moore). Many have this Valentine as the son of Valentine and Ann Scott Martin. I have no documentation of this and it seems that no one else does. If they do, they aren't willing to share. I would love to believe that this is correct, but until I see proof, will just have to "assume"!
