    2. Gerald Martin
    3. Mac- A good day to you as well- I am very aware of my Martin line and the many French Dit names that one must consider when doing the research. Although Martin is a very common surname and at times can be confusing, I have managed to trace my family sometimes with the assistance of and sometimes in spite of the numerous Dit names. It continues to be a welcomed challenge and if I can be of any assistance to anyone else doing similar research I am happy to do so- Take Care gerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Casa Del Luna" <sharmacvilla@comcast.net> To: <martin@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 29, 2007 1:30 PM Subject: Re: [MARTIN] Any MARTIN Family Connections in Vermont/Canada? > If your Martin line is from France, then you are probably aware of the > fact > that Martin is the most common surname there. 3. If your Martin line is from France, then you are probably aware of the fact that Martin is the most common surname there. To complicate that, the French-Canadian Martin line has about 30 dit names to consider. In the North Country, where your line settled, dit names were very common. Some of the people you look for may not be under the Martin surname. 3. Hi Stella YES- there were SEVERAL MARTIN's in/near/around Wayne County, IL that I have, so far, NOT been able to "connect". Here are some of the names of those unconnected MARTIN's- maybe we could find something?? JOHNSON MARTIN NATHAN MARTIN (died near Wayne Co, IL) JOSEPH MARTIN (died in Wayne Co, IL in 1821) OBADIAH MARTIN JACOB MARTIN JOHN MARTIN JAMES B. MARTIN )I know he went to AR before 1840- probably Searcy Co, AR) RAWLEY MARTIN ROBERT MARTIN (married NANCY HEADY in mid-1820's in White Co, IL) My Dad's DNA test came back with a DNA match to Central AL MARTIN's- but I am unaware of ANY of my MARTIN clan who went to AL....so it MUST have been ABRAHAM's siblings/parents!!! I suspect ABRAHAM may have "struck out on his own" and went West; while his parents/siblings may have "gone South"- but no prrof!!!!!!!! I THOUGHT that JAMES B. MARTIN was most probably ABRAHAM's Father; but DNA did NOT support that theory...............SO..............either: A) he was adopted; or B) he was from a TOTALLY different MARTIN clan; or C) aliens "dropped him off" in IL.................; or D) he went "North"; while the rest went "South"; or E) he THOUGHT JAMES B. MARTIN was his Father- but he wasn't!!!!!!!!!!! VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1. [MARTIN] More Vermont Connections
    2. I am looking for information regarding Edward Martin and his wife, Betsy Chase, who settled in Ferrisburgh, VT in 1794. They had thirteen children of which I can only account for four, namely: Hannah (1799, my gggm), Edward,Jr, 1806, Lydia Ann, 1811, and Susan, 1814. I would appreciate any information on the remaining siblings. Also, Edward is listed as head of household in the 1810 census of Ferrisburgh, but does not appear in the census of 1820. In the 1820 census, Betsy is listed as the head of household. Does anyone know what became of Edward? I would also be interested in knowing who Edward's parents were. Betsy died in 1860 in Georgia, VT at the home of her son, Edward, Jr. My gggrandmother, Hannah, married Stratton Martin, who descended from the Woodbury, CT Martin clan and I have extensive information on this family if anyone is interested. Thanks, Russ Hanson

    3. The line I have includes GGGGG-Grandparents Eleazer Martin, born 10 February 1747/48 (Note the calendar correction from the old style Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar), in Freetown, Mass. and died in South Hero, Vermont 05 April 1828. His wife, Mehitable Peters was born 21 April 1752 in Cumberland, Rhode Island and died 19 March 1838 in South Hero, Vermont. Prior to the Revolutionary War, they lived in Richmond, New Hampshire. The move to South Hero was prompted by free land offered veterans of the war. Ferrisburg, Vermont lies about 20 or so miles southeast of South Hero and was founded under a New Hampshire Grant. Interestingly, I have the following among my notes for Eleazer Martin in my files "In January 1855, a person named Caroline Ferris wrote a letter from Plattsburgh, in which she appeared to be an heir of Eleazer Martin. Her relationship is unknown, at this time, but thought to be a granddaughter." Note the name "Ferris". Many of the towns in the Northeast were named after the original settlers. E.g., Plattsburgh after the Platt family, Ira after Ira Allen, etc. It may well be that the Ferris in the note above was an ancestor of those founding Ferrisburg. She also appears to be in the line of Eleazer and Mehitable. I have never pursued this, as it is not in my direct line. As for Eleazer, I have parents Isaac Martin and Lucy and only have him as offspring, but I am certain there were several more. For Mehitable, I have parents Richard Peters and Mehitable Grant. There is lineage that takes a Martin line to c1680 in Massachusetts, but, to date, I have been unable to find a solid connection between that line and mine. The line is well documented and it appears that one of the Martins owned about 8 slaves in the late 17th century. I hope this helps, Mac ----- Original Message ----- From: <RHansonRet@aol.com> To: <martin@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 29, 2007 7:10 AM Subject: [MARTIN] More Vermont Connections >I am looking for information regarding Edward Martin and his wife, Betsy > Chase, who settled in Ferrisburgh, VT in 1794.
