    1. Re: [MARTIN] How abt. Huguenot Martins?
    2. Joyce G. Reece
    3. In order to learn the situation between the Martin's and the Huguenots you are going to have to study the history of the Huguenots and the form of religion that got them into trouble. Rev. William Martin brought 3 shiploads of Presbyterians into South Carolina and started a movement for Freedom of Religion in the Colonies that cost the British the Revolutionary War. That war in South Carolina really was about freedom of Religion....not tea or taxes. A succession of queens and kings (Mad King George) wished for the Church of England's or Angelicans to be the only religion in Britian. The throne betrayed the Presbyterians who supported her in England and Ireland. They eventually offered the Presbyterians (all over 16 yrs) sections of land in the colonies if they would just leave, which many of them did. It didn't take long for the Angelicans to move into the SC inlands to once again persecute the Presbyterians who'd just about had all they could stand of the Angelicans. At one point at a meeting house an Angelican minister was preaching his sermon when the local presbyterians took a bunch of their hunting hounds into the meeting house to raise such a ruckus the Angelican had to stop his speech. He later wrote that it would have done him no good to try to continue since the justices in the area were also Presbyterians. It's all documented. Later during the War of the Revolution the southern front came into play later in the War. It has been written that the hit and run tactics of the Carolinian's did more to advance the cause of freedom in 6 months than General Washington had done in three years. Tarleton and Cornwallis sure didn't know how to handle the ambush tactics of those hardy southern men. 1. [MARTIN] Martins
    2. Any Martins found in Vermont, or any of the other states or territories bordering Canada in the 1700s or 1800s are just as likely to be of French Catholic or French Huguenot ancestry as English. Greater New York (New Rochelle in Westchester County) to Philadelphia or Virginia and North Carolina were areas where the French Huguenots(Protestants) settled. Many prominent French Huguenot families fled France to England after the Catholics attacked in killed thousands of Protestants in France and then emigrated to the then English Colonies in America before the American Revolutionary War and continued to come afterwards. Also remember the Louisiana Territory was a French Territory before America bought it and when the British controlled New Orleans, the French Arcadians were forcibly removed from what is now Nova Scotia and relocated to New Orleans, otherwise known now as Cajuns. So if you hit a brick wall in your genealogy search, it might be you're not looking in the right direction. What may sound very much like an English Martin family tree may suddenly turn French. 3. Ed, What you say is true, some of the Martins in the North Country may well be of French Extraction, but the Martin line that settled in South Hero, Vermont and spred to Plattsburgh and other towns in Clinton County, New York were definitely from Baptist stock. This is well documented. On my mother's side of the family, everyone is French - and yes, they all had roots in Quebec first. Many people angilcized their names, as French-Canadians weren't all that popular in those days because they were Roman Catholic. There was, when I was a boy, a very stong presence of French speaking people in Malone - Franklin County, as you no doubt know. My maternal grandparents spoke only French at home and we were "more than encouraged" to answer them in like manner. There is a chance that some of the Martins are French as you state yours are, but the records seem to indicate that the greatest influx of Martins in Vermont and New Hampshire came from Rhode Island - definitely not French or Catholic. It doesn't hurt to keep an open mind, but one should also look at the facts. 3. You need date and locations! Where did they live? When were they born (or when do you think they were born?) Download some free Family Group Sheets and organize what you have. Begin with those people you know and document them and work backwards, one generation at a time. 3. I am looking for any information about a Mariam/Miriam/MaryAnn MARTIN who was born about 1814 in NY, I believe. Her husband was from VT, so that could also be a possibility. Mariam MARTIN married Emerson PRESTON/PRESSON, and lived in Palermo, Oswego, NY. I find a Levi MARTIN (1812-1890) living in the same area, so he might be a brother to Mariam. Emerson had been married earlier to Polly BROOKS, but I believe she died at an early age. Emerson was born in 1793, so he was about 21 years older than Mariam. Mariam died in 1888. I am hopeful that someone will know this branch of the MARTIN family. Thanks, Nancy

    1. Re: [MARTIN] Martin families
    2. Bill Churchill
    3. Mac, Was your Robert Martin immigrant by any chance related to the Robert Martin who came to the MA Bay Colony in 1635 with Rev. Joseph Hull? The 1635 Robert was from Ottery Saint Mary Parish in Devon, England. Does Cutter say that the Samuel Martin you mention was related to your Robert Martin? I was not aware that there were Martins in Wethersfield, Connecticut circa 1650. Churchills first arrived in Wethersfield around 1630. Do you know if Robert and Samuel were non-conformists? Regards, Bill Churchill -----Original Message----- From: Casa Del Luna [mailto:sharmacvilla@comcast.net] Sent: Tuesday, January 30, 2007 12:45 PM To: martin@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MARTIN] Martin families Norman, This is something from my files: "According to William Richard Cutter, the Plattsburgh Martin line descended from either Robert Martin, an immigrant from England who settled in New Haven, Connecticut, prior to 1655 or Samuel Martin, who immigrated circa 1650 and settled in Wethersfield, Connecticut. [1]" As you can see, this was published in 1910. I have found mistakes in other Cutter research, especially that of Martha's Vineyard, and I suspect he was wrong on this, as well, as I have traced the Martin line I have to Freetown, Mass.circa 1722 and , if I recall correctly, Rhode Island was a part of Massachusetts in those times. I have a hard time believing that they settled in Connecticut, as Cutter claimed.
