    1. Re: [MARTIN] MARTIN Digest, Vol 2, Issue 38
    2. For Carolyn Pace.... Carolyn I understand your frustration with the Hawkins name. This particular middle name simply pops up in a family with pretty repetetive naming patterns. There are no other Hawkins' to be found in this family. I do know that it was common to name children with a middle name that was from their county of birth. So maybe this is a possibility. Or maybe the Bentley/Martins were friends of the Hawkins'. Sometimes middle names were also given to boys to honor their father's military commanders. Most of these men fought in the revolutionary war, so that might be a possibility as well. I just sent a message to Barbara Samuels and RedfanJan that you might want to look at. It is really long, but in it, is a discussion of the Bently famly. This William Hawkins Martin was the son of Alice Bentley Martin. The Bentley's were in South Carolina at one time. So, who knows there might be a connection. I will certainly keep your information and let me know if anything else pops up. I will do the same. Good hunting! Maggie

    2. Michael Martin
    3. Bill, Here is some info on Samuel MARTIN of Wethersfield. Hope this helps. Mike 1. Samuel MARTIN Born: 1625, Devonshire, England. Died: September 15, 1683 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut. Married: by May 11, 1646, Phebe BISBY, from London, England, widow of Thomas BRACEY. Phebe married first Thomas BRACEY on August 4, 1631, had five children, and he died before May 11, 1646. Children: i. Samuel MARTIN Jr, born 1648, in Wethersfield, Connecticut, was a freeman of Woodbury, Connecticut in 1669. ii. Joseph MARTIN, born in Wethersfield, Connecticut and died as infant at Maidstone, Kent, England. (On a return visit to England) iii. David MARTIN, born 1650 in Wethersfield, Connecticut. 2. iv. William (Seaborn) MARTIN, born 1653 at sea. (Born at sea on Samuel's return back to New England) Lieut. Samuel MARTIN, 1st generation of New Haven and Wethersfield, Connecticut was born in Devonshire, England, and emigrated from Plymouth, England to America about 1640. The first recording of Samuel MARTIN in colonial documents appeared on February 24, 1641/2, when he was questioned by the magistrate about statements that Georg SPENCER had made in regards to retracting a coerced confession. Tragically because George SPENCER had but one eye and a piglet was born with congenital anomalies also having but one eye, he was accused and prosecuted for bestiality, and received capital punishment. In 1643 Samuel acquired a house-lot in Wethersfield, Connecticut, and in 1647 he acquired a second house-lot in Wethersfield with two and a half acres of land. "In 1646, Samuel Martin went from Wethersfield to New Haven, and married widow Phebe Bracey." Phebe's father, William BISBY, was not pleased with either of her husbands. In a letter to his sister-in-law, Mary WYLLYS, wife of George WYLLYS, Governor of the Connecticut Colony, dated May 11, 1646, he says of his daughter "shee was rash in her first marryage, & soe in her second". ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Bill Churchill" <churchil@koyote.com> Reply-To: martin@rootsweb.com To: <martin@rootsweb.com>, "'Mac'" <sharmacvilla@comcast.net> Subject: Re: [MARTIN] Martin families Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2007 17:44:12 -0600 Mac, Was your Robert Martin immigrant by any chance related to the Robert Martin who came to the MA Bay Colony in 1635 with Rev. I was not aware that there were Martins in Wethersfield, Connecticut circa 1650. Churchills first arrived in Wethersfield around 1630. Do you know if Robert and Samuel were non-conformists? [1]" As you can see, this was published in 1910. I have found mistakes in other Cutter research, especially that of Martha's Vineyard, and I suspect he was wrong on this, as well, as I have traced the Martin line I have to Freetown, Mass.circa 1722 and , if I recall correctly, Rhode Island was a part of Massachusetts in those times. I have a hard time believing that they settled in Connecticut, as Cutter claimed. 3. For Maggie You are the only other Martin researcher that I have run across with Hawkins as a middle name . Mine was Joseph Hawkins Martin born abt 1790-1798 in the Barnwell/Charleston area of SC. Married to Elizabeth "betsy" Bates. and was in this same area thru the 1850 census and then shows up in Emanuel County GA on the 1860 census. He had remarried by that time to a lady by the name of Julia and right now I can't remember her last name. He is buried in the Youngblood Cemetery in Statesville, GA. Further back that this man is a gigantic brick wall for everyone researching this line. Just thought it was a huge coincidence. After 30 years of research and TONS of documentation, I am absolutely certain your William Harvey is NOT the son of John and Isabell. I have William Hawkins Martin's discharge papers from the Civil War stating his middle name as Hawkins. I also have bible records that mach his birthdate to this William Hawkins and list him as the son of John and Isabell. John and Isabell's William H. was born 5/28/1823 and died 7/2/1893. I also have allhis descendency information and letters written between his brothers and parents during the civil war. Your William Harvey is often incorrectly listed by many people as the son of John and Isabell and it made my life miserable for years trying to connect him So don't feel bad, there is a lot of mis-information out there, that is why this group is so valuable. The good news is he is not John and Isabell's son, because so far, nobody but nobody has been able to find their parents for sure. Several guesses out there, but nothing concrete that I know of. However, your William Harvey is pretty well documented I believe. He is not mine and I cannot help you. But, there are definitely people here that can. Try going to the threaded archives and checking the old posts. If you do not know how to do that, contact our list administrator and she can tell you how to do it. Don't despair, knowing who you are NOT related to, is often just as important as knowing who you ARE related to. I wish you luck and good hunting! Welcome aboard.
