Lilly, I found information that Jim Dave Martin and Lora Mae/May Musslewhite had seven children, all born in Cherokee County, Texas. If you will contact me, I will give you the particulars. I also have found some other information that might help. Hi Lillie, I see you did not furnish your personal email address so I will reply to the List and hope you read it. I too have Martins descendants in most of those Texas locations you mentioned plus Oklahoma but my Martins came out of Red Boiling Springs, TN in 1880, about. Wylie Martin and his wife Martha and their 12 kids moved from TN to Texas during the time from 1880 to 1890 to Hill County, Texas. You made a statement that may not be true; you think Shayne Garret Forrest is a man; I think he is a she. Shayne is still living near Blue Ridge, TX at S Forrest 14887 County Road 1100 Blue Ridge, TX 75424-3344 Phone: (972) 752-4478 and she/he is living with CARAWAY,JAMES ROBERT 14887 County Road 1100, Blue Ridge, TX 75424-3344 Texas Also, Shayne old email address was "shyhotmom1" at cs.com. That name indicates a woman. Perhaps, trying to send email messages to that name at gmail.com and hotmail.com and yahoo.com might yield some results. I may have some info that could be of use?? I also knew of a teacher in Bexar Co. Texas named Musslewhite. It is an unusual name. But my--- she would be atleast in her 80s by now. I think that she did have daughters?? Also, I note that one of your Martins had the middlename of Gayle. So did one of my Martins who died about 1870 as a child. These Martins were in Louisiana and were married into my Wilson family in that time frame. The husband Issac Martin died before 1910 and most of the family moved to east Texas. This Issac Martin married Sarahann Lewis Wilson Hagewood. He was her 3rd and last husband. I have found them on La. census and they are in our Family Bible. Her first two husbands died. (One was in the Civil War) She had two children with her first husband, Ludson Wilson, none with Mr.Hagewood, and then the only child with Mr. Martin was Barbara Gayle Martin. This little girl died as a child. My great great great grandmother remained married to Issac Martin unil her death and had no more children. It is believed that Issac Martin raised the two Wilson step children. The handwritting on the La. census where I find them is difficult, but it almost looks as if it says that Issac was from Indiana. There were other Martins that lived close to them in Avoyelles Parish and in the Point Coupee Parish census. Later, by 1900, the family lived in western most La. and finally in east Texas. Only a little thing that might connect our Martins,----but you never know. Given names are sometimes handed down thru families. Thanks, Jon. I have done some of this but your suggestion is a good one and I will expand the search to the various places where they might have had contact. It is frustrating to not have census records after 1930. My assumption is that J. S. Martin died in California, but even that is merely an assumption without birthdate and place of birth information to help with the Social Security Death Index and California Death Index. Many thanks to the several who have already responded to my posting on this List. My Martins were never in Va. but instead in Indiana and La. I am looking for Wilsons in Henry Co. Va. but someone had Martins there. **Note Joseph in the applications list. It was easy to find your dad in 1920 and 1930. I would assume that if they knew each other in the late teens early 20's that they might actually live near each other. Next I would check in the close neighborhood around where your dad was living in both census's. You might, also find a marriage for a Dollye Martin in those areas. A lot of given names"Minnie" were Minnie Lee in my family...Maybe look `again in Death Index for a Minnie L Martin. also..there are tons of Jacob Martins. that name might make a connection..This is not much help...but Goodluck...Stella
Thanks, Jon. I have had contact with the churches. One in Colorado sent me two newspaper clippings but neither one had any hard data that could help in searching genealogical records. As a matter of fact, I have supplied several of the churches with photos and other newspaper clippings. I suggest that you contact the Nazarene churches in the towns listed to see if they might have any records of JS and JR. Churches usually do keep records for long periods of time. Help! I'm going bananas trying to find a J. S. MARTIN. I knew the man in the Bay Area, California in the 1950s-1960s. I believe his wife's name was Minnie and they may have had a daughter named Dollye. My father was a Nazarene evangelist and elder and I know for a fact that J. R. HUNTER and J. S. MARTIN had extended evangelistic meetings in Colorado in the period of 1917-1920, including such towns as Montrose, Delta, Canon City, and Colorado Springs. I have photos of J. S. MARTIN from that time and a newspaper clipping or two (one of which cited him incorrectly as B. S. MARTIN. I believe that while the MARTINS were living in the Bay Area, they attended the Berkeley Church of the Nazarene and were involved with my parents in the Bay Area Holiness Association. I have tried to obtain information from various Church of the Nazarene sources and the national denominational Archives in Kansas City, but with little success. Unfortunately, I do not know what the initials J. S. stand for and I do not know where he was born. I know they lived for a time in Nebraska. All my efforts in checking census records have been unsuccessful. There are plenty of Martins in Nebraska in the 1900-1930 censuses, but I haven't been able to hook up a J. S. Martin with a wife named Minnie. Of course, Minnie may also be only a nickname. The daughter Dollye (again real name or nickname?) obviously was given because my mother's name was Dollye. My sense is that J. S. and Minnie Martin died in California, but without birthdates and place of birth I can't seem to pick them out of the California Death Index or Social Security Death Index. Believe me, I have tried everything. I do not know where my father and J. S. MARTIN may have become acquainted, though I suspect it had to be in either Nebraska or possibly Iowa. My father was born in New Market, Iowa in 1883 and my sense is that he and J. S. Martin were of an age. I have photos from Colorado that suggest that my father and J. S. MARTIN were called "The Sons of Thunder" in the advertising for their evangelistic meetings. J. S. MARTIN was the song leader and soloist of the HUNTER-MARTIN evangelistic team. Is there anyone out there who might have some clues that would help me locate J. S. and Minnie MARTIN? I am amxious to get their genealogical data as I am researching my father's life and ministry in order to put together a written memoir. Please forgive this too lengthyand probably confusing posting. I hope that someone out there may be able to help. Thanks. Tis is my first posting so hopefully I haven't violated any of the list's rules.
I am interested in any information for a William Martin found in the Des Moines Iowa Census 1900, Lee Twp. Ward 7, wife Amanda, step dau. Jennie Emery, daughters Ella (born 1881 Iowa) and Mary (born 1887 Iowa). Thank-you! Carol Anderson
Thelma, It is I who was mistaken; your numbers below are correct! Sorry if I mislead someone. The pension packets, if they are to be $25, have gone up not down. They have been $14.75 and the full file $37.00. I agree $125.00 is outrageous. There is not very much information in the packets so I don't even order them anymore. However, $37.00 is pretty low for some of the files I have gotten are well over 200 pages long. Does anyone know when they last raised the prices? It seems to me they might have to increase prices but not to $125.!!!! Jim I agree with you, would save time and increase money for future requests. The online downloads could be win/win for all. NARA could sell memberships as does Heritage Quest. Will never happen as makes too sense!!! I agree, Jim. I have found facts about the family from the full pension file that I would never have found elsewhere. I sure hope that our comments will make a difference. Don't know why that would be true, unless a genealogical researcher wasn't aware of the distinction when ordering. There is more likely to be more genealogical info in the full pension file. Julia, I got thru the instructions and submitted my comments. One note of interest the increase from $37 to $125 is for the full civil war pension file; the cost for the civil war pension document packet (selected documents) went down from $37 to $25. The info in the federal register from NARA states that this latter pension file is what is ordered by most researchers. Don't know why that would be true, unless a genealogical researcher wasn't aware of the distinction when ordering. There is more likely to be more genealogical info in the full pension file. I went to the NARA site to find a place to make a comment on the fee increase, but the site is almost impossible to figure out. Maybe you could give step-by-step instructions in a future newsletter. Also, maybe you could encourage people to write their representatives. I am not against a reasonable fee to cover the cost of paper and ink, but $125 for Civil War pension records is way out of line. That puts the cost out of reach for most researchers. I would pay an extra fee if the records I request would be put online for everyone to access. As long as they are going to the trouble of copying them once, how hard would it be to put them on the website? Hi How do the rest of you get on with the Genes Reunited web site? Personally I find the Genes Reunited site unnecessarily tedious to use - I can't be bothered with all the secrecy and the convoluted workings. I have up loaded my 'tree'as a Gedcom file to it, but tend to redirect 'contacts' from the Genes Reunited web site to my own web site where they can search to their 'hearts delight' and to then contact me again by direct e-mail to discuss our joint ancestry. And what is it with the 'contacts'? They go to all that trouble to initiate a contact, then you reply, then nothing! Even when it was obvious from the start that there was a 'firm' match - nothing! Are the people who use Genes Reunited serious about their Family History or was it a passing phase they went through one wet Saturday afternoon? Then again they may be the types who only switch on their computer once a month, or members of the IT inept. How do you get across to them that by not following up on a contact they have started, they are wasting your time and being rude in the extreme? The Genes Reunited system seems to have this situation designed in to it. What's the point of it? Not communication - or uniting any genes that's for sure!
