    3. Given Undocumented Events I seriously doubt that - if you mean all Martins are genetically related. Of course, if you mean Martin de Tours was the originator of Martin as a surname - that could be true. Martin is Norman name used by both English and much later French descendants. In that regard it has both a Norman (later to be French) and English origin - assuming the varied family descent claims are correct. In any case, Martin would have originated from Normandy for which France had no claim in the time of the Conquest. (In a fight the Normans would have had the French for lunch circa Conquest time.) Are you saying that French and English Martins are genetically related? Has the Martin Project tested French derived Martins and are they related to the English Martins? Would all the above make Martin French or English??? Just wondering. 3. I have run across a problem with many of my surname searches and I am asking everyone for advise on how to best avoid this problem. As many of you have probably found out, there are MANY different Martin clans that are not related to each other in any way. With Martin being such a common name, it is easy to be tracing a person and find out later that they have absolutely no connection to your family whatsoever. This could mean hours of work for nothing. Recently, I have followed two lines of Martins that were not related to me, and the way I found out (down the line) was that they were slaves, and took on the Martin name of their owner. (Still not sure if the owner was related) Is there any proper way that we could post about our ancestors, and note if they were of any general group (English, German, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, American Indian, Swedish, French, etc) without hurting anyone's feelings? Providing this information on this list could help someone find a link or may help someone that is traveling down a dead end path of searches. Suggestions for solving this problem would be appreciated. Ken Martin

    3. Marsha, Thanks very much for your reply. This is very interesting. I have been searching for the origins of my Williams line for at least ten years. When I found out that my DNA matched the Martins that sent me down a new road. But, evidently, the Williams and the Martins have been mixed up together for a long time. Even to this day, these two families live together in Giles County, VA. I would be interested to know the children of John Martin and Catherine Williams. Also, who are the parents of this John Martin? How is he related to the William Martin who married Susanna Meador in Bedford in 1782? And, of course, the big question-- how did my James Williams, b. 1793, get the Martin male line DNA? We are leaving later today for a camping trip, so I will be away from the computer until Sunday evening. Thanks very much, Randy Williams ----- Original Message ----- From: "marsha moses" <mosesm@earthlink.net> To: <martin@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 14, 2007 10:04 PM Subject: Re: [MARTIN] Martin & Williams in Bedford Co., VA Randy, I look at the Martins in Bedford County, Va a little bit in the time frame that you are talking about. 3. Hello Mr. Williams, Your family line caught my eye because of the name of Bailey Martin. However, the exact Bailey Martin that you list here is not the same man I am following, but the use of the name at least caught my eye. My earliest direct ancestor is William M. Martin b. 1826 Rockingham Co NC. I am not sure of his father, but he was closely associated with Bailey Martin, Jr b. 1793 Rockingham Co NC. Bailey Martin, Sr is a man who married a Lydia. Lydia and Bailey Martin Sr lived on Troublesome Creek in Rockingham Co NC from at least 1790. This exact area is close to Reidsville, NC. They lived next door to a man named JAMES Martin, who is said to have come from Henry County, Virginia. Bailey Martin, Sr died and left Lydia a widow, when she died in 1840 she left a Will in Rockingham Co VA, which named her 2 sons as: Michajah Martin and Bailey Martin Jr. However in her Will, she chose to name Bailey and his wife Isabelle and all their children one by one, but for her son Michajah she only named him, no wife or children named. My theory is, that my ancestor William M. Martin was not the son of Bailey Martin, Jr and Isabelle, because they already have a son named William Thoms Martin. But my ancestor could be the son of Michajah Martin, the brother to Bailey Martin, Jr. My ancestor William M. Martin b. 1826 NC left Rockingham Co NC about 1853 to move and settle at Henderson Co Tennessee. James Nathaniel Martin b. 1836 Rockinghma Co NC also went with him to Henderson Co TN, near Lexington. James Nathaniel Martin was the son of Bailey Martin, Jr and Isabelle Herron, of Rockingham Co NC. My ancestor William M. Martin died in 1870 at Henderson Co TN, and by 1878 his widow and his children, along with James Nathaniel Martin, his wife Sarah Westbrook, and children, all moved together to Navarro County, Texas, near Corsicanna. I already know all the children and grandchildren of Bailey Martin, Jr and Isabelle Herron. I also know all the children and grandchildren of William M. Martin. I would like to find more about Michajah Martin, the son of Bailey Martin, Sr and Lydia. I would like to find the father of William M. Martin b. 1826 Nc. 3. Grandfather James was born in 1756 and twice married, secondly to my gggg-grandmother Mary (surname unknown) who was listed as a widow on the 1830 Census in Bryan Couinty and made a Quit Claim Deed in 1841 in Bryan County, naming his heirs. I believe she died in FL after relocating there to live with their son, Emanuel Henry Martin. A book by Elam Virgil Martin on E.H. Martin's Genealogy is available in Orlando and Tampa Libraries and probably other larger Libraries. Your local Library might get it on Inter-Library Loan...but don't place a lot of faith in it going back before Grandfather John...They made an error and caused a lot of mis-information to be spread. Grandfather James had a son, James (ii), but I know nothing about him...I know that Grandfather James was alive in 1828 because he Deeded land to Emanuel Henry Martin, but he must have died before 1830. He had extensive land holdings in Bryan County, maybe 1000 acres or more, and he was a Commissioner after the Revolutionary War. I would very much like to find more data on his Patriot activities, and think they may be the John and James Martin who are listed on the Tory 'List of Traitors to the Crown' made after the British recaptured Savannah in 1782. I know that he sold Grandfather John's Baldwin County Land grant in 1810. I know that he got Land Grants in "old" Effingham County before the War and some after the War, before Effingham was divided up. I have a hunch that they migrated from the Edgefield SC Martins in the early 1770's and I think Grandfather John's father was a William Martin but I have not proven it... Stay in touch...maybe together we can sort this out... >From: Bill Derrow <lwderrow@comcast.net> >Reply-To: martin@rootsweb.com >To: martin@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [MARTIN] MARTIN Digest, Vol 2, Issue 83 >Date: Wed, 13 Jun 2007 19:47:17 -0400 > >Hello, > >Do you know anything about John's son, James? 3. Then after pushing send on my e-mail, I looked at your address. These Martins lived only miles from your home. They lives at McDonald's Mill. Last time we were in Blacksburg, we just drove right on out one of the roads there to see where these people had lived. I would be happy to chat. marsha in WV Randy Williams wrote: >Hello, >My name is Randy Williams but my yDNA matches Group 8 in the Martin DNA project. 3. Randy, I look at the Martins in Bedford County, Va a little bit in the time frame that you are talking about. My husband descends from the John Martin and Catherine Williams married in 1817 with James Martin surety. > HInshaw says bond are 29th in his volume VI James Williams Surety > married by John Ayers on 30 Jan 1817. I have a list of children that I believe belong to this family if you would want the names. My data base says: > John had lived in Bedford Co VA. In 1838 he purchased 100A in > Montgomery Co VA on the north > fork of the Roanoke River. > > John is living in Archibald and Nancy’s home in the census of 1870 so > probably his wife has died. He is 80 years old at that time which also > matches up with the birth date that I have. Nancy is one of John and Catherine's daughters. Archibald is Archibald Moses. He and Nancy are actually living on land that had originally belonged to John Martin. I believe that Nancy and Archibald had lived close to Nancy's parents for all of their married life and that they continued to care for John until his death. My data base also says: > > James Williams is listed as surety on the marriage bonds according to > Hinshaw’s Volume VI . Baley Martin and Elizabeth Williams have > marriage bonds 1824, 9, 1. John Martin is surety and consent is given > by James Williams . Marriage takes place Sept 5. 1824 by John Ayers. I have put James Williams in as father for Catherine Williams ....probably based on the fact that he gives consent on this marriage. I have done very little more research on this....but am happy to share anything that I have. 1. [MARTIN] John A. Martin, Baldwin Co., GA /James L. Martin, Jasper, Randolph, & Stewart Cos., GA, Dale & Barbour Cos., AL
    2. Bill Derrow
    3. Hello, Do you know anything about John's son, James? My ancestor, James L. Martin, was in Jasper in the early 1800s, marrying there in 1821, but I have no information on his siblings or parents, except one reference to his father being J. Mather Martin, which has yet to be substantiated. If John A. Martin died in 1809, he would have been old enough to be the father of James L. Martin, who was born ca. 1790, SC, and died ca. 1851/1852, Barbour Co., AL. Any possible connection? 3. My ggggg-grandfather John A Martin received a 282 1/2 acre Land Grant from Gov. Jared Irwin in 1808, located in Baldwin County. Now, I recognize that the land was actually in what is now Jasper County and that the present day Baldwin County is not the same as that County which was later re-named Randolph, and afterward became Jasper...However, I am replying to your Inquiry in hope that you can identify Grandfather John and/or his Parents. He died in 1809 in Bulloch or Bryan County. His wife's name was Elizabeth and I believe she pre-deceased him. He had five known {or identified} children: James; Elijah; Rachel; Mary; & my gggg-grandmother Mercy. Elijah and Rachel may have been twins, since I have seen records indicating the same Birth-year for both, albeit there were no BC back then. They were adherents of the German Baptist Brethren, often called 'Dunkers.' Grandfather John was a Minister. If you can provide any connection, I would appreciate it... >From: e.g.lambert@att.net >Reply-To: martin@rootsweb.com >To: martin@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [MARTIN] MARTIN Digest, Vol 2, Issue 83 >Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2007 10:11:59 +0000 > >My Martin family was from Baldwin County [Milledgeville], Georgia--James >Thomas Martin who married Mattie Luvenia Vinson. > >-------------- Original message from martin-request@rootsweb.com: >-------------- > > > > > > > > Today's Topics: > > > > 1.
