Bill I am a decentant of John Henry Martin who lived in Madison, Al. He married a Martha (Mattie) Hilliard in June of 1898 in Huntsville. I was told that John's mother's name was Rebecca, but that is all I know. Are we related? Pam Podelski

According to the 1850 census, this particular George W. Martin was born in TN in 1813. By 1850, he had already moved into Graves Co, KY and married Sarah Jane Glass (also born in TN, but family came from NC). Anyone know about a Jefferson MARTIN b. 1806 in KY. He and family are on the 1850 Alexander CO., IL census. Married Mary Ann KIDD also of KY. Thomas MARTIN also lives near by on the 1850 census. As far as I know I'm not related to this guy. My James W. Martin came to Indiana bef. 1850, from Miami County, Ohio. He was married there to Nancy Roland. Hope this bio is helpful to someone on the list. JOHN MARTIN, farmer and stock-raiser, section 2, Randolph Township, Tippecanoe County, was born in Madison County, Ohio, May 12, 1817, a son of JOSEPH MARTIN, who was a native of Pennsylvania, and a soldier in the war of 1812. He removed to Ohio in an early day, and in 1820 came to Indiana and resided in Greene County until 1826. March 27, 1826, he came to Tippecanoe County, and settled on the land which is now occupied by our subject. He was one of the old and honored pioneers of the county, where he lived until his death. At the time of his settlement here the surrounding country was in a state of nature, and white people few. Indians and wild animals were the principal inhabitants. JOHN MARTIN, our subject, was reared from boyhood amid the wild surroundings of pioneer life, and attended school in the old fashioned log cabins which were taught by subscription. He was reared to agricultural pursuits, and has followed the vocation of a farmer through life. He was married December 28, 1837, to SUSANNAH MILLER, whose father, MARTIN MILLER, was one of the early settlers of this county. MRS. MARTIN died December 15, 1867. They were the parents of thirteen children, ten of whom still survive--MILLER; SAMUEL, married and living in Wisconsin; GEORGE; DAVID married CAROLINE MARTIN and has seven children; JOHN; MARY, wife of WILLIAM HINTON; REBECCA J., married GEORGE GRIFFIN, and has four children; MARTHA E. married JOSEPH WHISTLER, and has two children; MARIA, married JOSEPH RAILING, and has two children, and ELIZA A. The five children last mentioned live near the parental homestead. MR.
