    1. [MARTIN-L] William Martin, Physician, of Greens County, Georgia, 1859
    2. Herb Scott
    3. In 1859 William Martin, a physician, was living in Greene County, Georgia. He may have had a son William born in 1844, as there is a William Martin born to William C. and Elvira Martin recorded in Greene County. Is the elder Martin the William Martin that was a physician? I need any information on these Martins. Herb Scott herb-scott@mindspring.com

    3. I just noticed this e-Mail from the past. I don't know why I didn't e-Mail you at the time, but I don't recall doing so. I had a ggg uncle named Oliver P. Martin who was born in 1842 in either Wayne Co., MS or in AL. He is purportedly dead before 1878, but I'm not certain how that information was derived. Although it was clear when you wrote this message that you didn't know anything about this Oliver, much less his family, I am hoping that someone had a connection for you. 1. [MARTIN-L] 1600's/early 1700's Northumberland/Westmoreland Co., VA
    2. Hello, So far, I have had no luck finding any information regarding Lewis LEWIS who would have been born sometime in the mid/late 1600's to abt. 1700 in Virginia probably in Northumberland County, Virginia or could have been born elsewhere, perhaps in Wales or England. He married Elizabeth JOHNSTONE whom I believe is related to the Jane JOHNSTONE, (daughter of James JOHNSTONE,) who married James LAMKIN and they are related to a John PAYNE, Jr.. Is this the son of John PAYNE, born: abt. 1615 in Yorkshire, England, who immigrated to Rappahannock, VA and married Margrett/Margaret ?/ROBINSON?, (dau of Richard ROBINSON prob. who was early immigrant to Tidewater area,) whose daughter, Margaret PAYNE married 1st husband, John JENNINGS, and whose 2nd husband was Christopher EDRINGTON, Sr.? Trying to find out whether or not this Lewis LEWIS mentioned below is the brother of David LEWIS whom my husband appears to descend from and John "Councillor" LEWIS from whom it is believed that I descend in my paternal lineage. In the information below it shows these lines connecting to my COX lineage with Hannah COX and also an AUBREY/AWBREY line and one possible MURPHY line that I don't know if I directly descend from or not. And there is a Jane MARTIN in connection with this information below that I am also trying to sort out where she and the Elizabeth PAYNE aka Elizabeth JOHNSTONE fits in to this immediate LEWIS - JOHNSTONE - LAMKIN family group that also connects to some of my other family lines as well. Looking forward to someone who has more clarification on some of this information especially regarding who the parents of this Lewis LEWIS were. Thank you. (See the following family tree information.) She says, "Unto my daughter Jane JOHNSTONE my plantation...If it should please God to take from this life my daughter Jane before she is marryed or comes of age or dieing without issue, the estate to fall into the possession of John AWBREY and James Gaynor. Unto my daughter Elizabeth PAIN to the value of fourty shillings...John AWBREY being a liver att my house shall there remain without opposition during the finishing of this crope (sic) or longer as he may find to his conveniencey and not to admitte of any person to dwell upon the plantation without consent from what estate I have willed unto my daughter Jane. (signed) Jane (hF) MARTIN." Proved 16 May 1677. "John Payne Jr. was married before 1676, because at that date his mother-in-law, Jane Martin, left a will naming her daughter as "Elizabeth Pain." This woman Elizabeth is often called Elizabeth Awbrey, but that is incorrect. The confusion comes in because Elizabeth had a sister named Jane who married John Awbrey, a man old enough to be the girls' father. With a mother called Jane & daughter called Jane, a man much older than his wife, and the fact that John Awbrey was mentioned in mother Jane's will--all that taken together resulted in an incorrect assignment of John & Jane Awbrey as Elizabeth's parents. However, mother Jane Martin's will makes it clear that her daughter Elizabeth is married to a "Pain" and that daughter Jane Johnstone is underage. (John Awbrey appears to be an overseer or something to that effect, and is mentioned in the will. His exact relationship to the family is unclear, but he is obviously not Elizabeth's father.) Assuming that married daughter Elizabeth is older than underage daughter Jane Johnstone, I have also *assumed* that Elizabeth was a Johnstone (rather than a Martin). (See more of Jane Martin's will at the bottom of the page. I can find only an excerpted will at the moment. I'll try to find the full document later.) Mother Jane Martin was evidently married at least twice, earlier to a Johnstone & last to a Martin, who left her a widow. But neither of her husbands is known, nor is her maiden name known. I have both John Payne Jr. and Elizabeth Johnstone Payne dieing c 1698, though I have no reason given as to why I recorded that. The only two children I have for them are "our" William & brother John. The records Shawn sent (below) indicate these realtionships. ---record--- 1.
