Dear Martin Searchers: I have been slowly piecing together the members of my Martin family. Please take a quick look at the descendants of Johnson Martin listed below. I am particularly interested in locating any descendents of the children of Johnson listed below who have no 3rd generation listed. On the 1900 census, Mary, wife of Johnson, is listed with comments that 6 of her 12 children were living. ???? I know that Drusilla and Hiram were living and that Johnson Jr. had died. I have not yet been able to locate the remaining 4 living children on the 1900 census records. Mary was living in the household of Drusilla in Logan County, AR in 1900. Any information would be appreciated. Nancy Scott Martin was born in Henry county, Kentucky on June 5th, 1827. To them were born twelve children, seven boys and five girls. Of this family there are still nine living, three of the girls having passed away. The beloved subject of this memoriam continued to enjoy the faithful companionship of her husband until May 28,1878, when death claimed her life's helpmate and she was left alone with her children. With them she continued to reside in Indiana until 1881 when with the greater part of her family she emigrated to Gosper county, Nebraska where she homesteaded a piece of land and on which she made her home until the time of her death. In her early girlhood, she united with the Christian or Campbellite church, but later on severed her relation with that church and united with the Baptist church that she might worship with the same demonination as her husband. Of the latter church, she was a faithful and consistent member for more than twenty-five years. But her conception of the Christian religion did not stop with the carrying of her name on the church record, her life was filled with many kindly deeds of Christian charity, love, forebearance and fortitude, the memory which will be a shining light for many feet that follow after her. A loving and faithful wife, she could be nothing else than a loving and patient mother. In her family, her life seemed central. Her chiefest aim was the welfare of her children, and the griefs and trials born uncomplaingly, the sore sacrifices made cheerfully and the silently uttered prayers for the welfare of her children which she has made may never be known only by Him who knoweth all things and by whom the fall of even a sparrow is noted. About two years ago, feeling the weakness of age coming upon her, she quit housekeeping and lived from that time to her death with her children who lived near and with her. In the winter of 1892-93, she was attacked with the lagrippe, which was then prevalent in that country. She apparently recovered but the insidious disease had undermined a hitherto strong constitution, and during the present winter she began to fail rapidly, the disease taking the form of the dropsy of the heart. On Sunday, December 16, she began to get rapidly worse and word was telegraphed to her children, but owing to distance some of them did not get to her bedside in time to see her again alive. Jan Sorry I accidentally hit reply. I don't really know where my Martins are from other than Illinois to Missouri. James has been my brick wall. I knew nothing at all except his name and that he lived in Illinois. A recent discussion with my aunt Alice revealed his military background and I thought it maybe a way to locate him. I do know a little about Sylvester Martin born March 5 1854 Bruce Illinois. In the 1880 census I found him working as a farm hand for the Thompson Family in Moultrie Co. Mo. In 1888 he married Alice Baker in Cumberland Co. Sylvester and Alice had 6 children Oretta , Gertrude ,Jack Leo, Tracy, Charles and Evan. They lived most of the time in Southern Mo. Alice inherited a sizable amount of land from her father Evan Baker in Neoga Illinois but Sylvester was a gambler and lost it all . He work as a Mull Skinner in Winona Mo. I never heard he was a twin but I really don't know much and the year fits . Is this the same James Scott Martin from Moultrie Co? I thought I read of a James Scott in that group of Martins. My gggrandfather was James Martin. After his first wife, Emeila Terry, died, he remarried Lurany Heron. My database shows James and Lurany had four children -- Charles, Mary, Sylvester, Emily. Sylvester and Emily (twins) were born in 1854. James Martin and Lurany separated and perhaps divorced. James moved to Nebraska with his son, Miles, from his marriage to Emeila. They ultimately settled in Farnam where he and Miles are buried. The parents of James Martin were James Scott Martin and Mary Virginia Feagley who moved from Logan County, KY to IL. I have information about this family if you want it. I recently found out at least it is a family story that James Martin fought at Pilot Knob under Grant . I check the roster for that company and there was a James Martin in the 21st Inf. Company B . He enlisted June 15 1861, in Neoga Illinois as a corporal. He was later promoted to Lieutenant. I hope this is the same James Martin, who is the father of Sylvester.
