Hi Larry, did you see the posting on MARTIN-L from Fran Fletcher on 11-9, 11:18 PM? She goes into quite a bit of detail about what may be our line but I still don't understand if this is our line or not. Fran seems to suggest the father of our 1781 John was Azariah born 1763 in Amherst Co. VA and married Lucy Rhodes April 20, 1791 in Amherst Co VA. However I am unconvinced because our John was born in Caswell Co., NC in 1781, 10 years before Azariah and Lucy Rhodes married. If anyone can help clear this up I would be most grateful. James A. HI We are looking for our John martin from Georgie and Alabama, possibly Tenn. He was married to a Sophronie . had two sons we know of John and Robert, in the middle 1880'3. they moved on to Texas Any help appreciated Alice
My real brickwall..looking for parents or any ancestors of Samuel Ellis(Elias)Martin. Born abt 1825-started paying small taxes in Amherst Co, VA. abt 1844/45-living with Nancy Hartless in 1850 Amherst census- I have checked all will abstracts and deeds of that county-can't find any connection with another Martin. He did buy a some land from James & Margaret Martin in Nov. 1845, but sold it the same month-no clues in that deed either. Anyone have ideas as to where I should turn next? Thanks, Phyllis
I am interested in MARTIN's that moved from NC to GA between 1820 and before 1840. I am searching for my GGGrandfather's parents and siblings. William MARTIN was born March 24, 1818, in NC and died June 27, 1860 in Gwinnett County, GA. On 9 July 1840 in Forsyth County, GA he married Letta PRUITT, b. March 11, 1826, in SC. Lettie is the daughter of Washington Hale PRUITT and his wife, Martha Zelphina EARLY, who resided in Hall County, GA from 1827 until 1839/40, when they moved to Forsyth County, Georgia. Wm and Lettie MARTIN lived in Lumpkin and Gwinnett Counties in GA as found in the 1850 and 1860 census. I know they were married in 1840 in Forsyth County, GA but have never found them in any1840 census. Lettie was not listed with her family in the 1840 census as it was taken just after they married. Maybe they missed the census? William and Letta's children: Sarah Ann MARTIN 1842 Nancy Matilda MARTIN 1845 Martha Jane MARTIN 4 Oct 1846 married W. J. CHEEK John Wesley MARTIN 1851 married Mary WILSON Levi MARTIN 1853 Henry MARTIN 1856 married Sara Ellen Walters/Watters (?) Ezekiel Pinkston MARTIN 1858 married Drucilla Adeline CLACK Margarett Adeline MARTIN 1860 married J. J. WOFFORD William MARTIN's widow, Lettie PRUITT Martin married (2) her former brother in law, Ezekiel P. HARVEY (1813 -1897) on January 22,1863 in Forsyth County, Georgia and had two more children. They also resided in Gwinnett County, GA until their death. I do not know where Wm MARTIN lived before he married in 1840 in Forsyth County to Lettie. It may be Wm was living in Hall County and married Lettie in Forsyth County as that is where her family had just moved to at the time. I believe Elinder/Eleanor MARTIN to be my William's older sister. When she died, her husband married Wm's widow. He may have a Mahala MARTIN BLALOCK (b. 1820 in NC) as his younger sister, too. 1850 MARTIN WILLIAM Lumpkin County GA 079 Barrett's District Federal Population Schedule GA 1850 Federal Census Index GAS5a1109109 They are in the 1860 U. Regarding those with John Martins, in Georgia....I, too, have a John Martin, born in GA in l820...in Alabama about l840 with wife, Mary Elizabeth. He was also known as Jack or Jackson Martin. Am watching with a great deal of interest. John in Calif.
I am tied to this line. Would love to know your lineage. The person looking for Azariah has me intrigued. I know Ephraim moved to N. Carolina then on to Georgia. Sure sound's like our family linage with those names, huh. Hope to hear from you, Vickie in Calif. ----- Original Message ----- From: <MARTIN-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <MARTIN-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: November 13, 2001 10:00 PM Subject: MARTIN-D Digest V01 #148

I am looking for info on 2 of the children I don't have info on and on Sam Martins family. I do know Sam married a woman named Pearl after Surilda passed. The older children may have moved on at that time as the story is Pearl was a ''hateful person'' and she destroyed anything that was r/t Surilda. If anyone has any info please help thanks :-) Gayle
Anybody researching Martin's of Russell Co., VA ca. 1870-85? Mine, John P. MARTIN married a TUGGLE est. 1875 and had two sons (Henry and John M.) before dying before 1884 when she remarried. Hope somebody can claim them - they are a complete mystery. One family story (and this family had stories...) was that John P. and his brother had gotten in some sort of trouble with the law in Indiana before coming to VA...and, maybe his first name was Joe... but, the story could've just been entertainment Thanks for the help Jan Daniel

Hi Richard, Thanks for your reply to my query. Timewise, you are way ahead of me with your Martins. I kinda suspect that the Margaret Martin that I am chasing came from Abbeville, SC, to Hall Co., GA, in the early 1820s, because in 1825 Hall Co., she was single with 3 kids in the Poor School there. I believe that the Margaret (single) in the 1820 Abbeville Census, #p. 22, is her. In this census she was of age 16-26 with two boys and one girl all less than ten years old. On 3-4-1813, the Abbeville records show a marriage between a Johnson Martin and a Margaret Green and it's possible that this is them also. The 1810 Abbeville census shows a Thomas Martin and a John C. Green living near each other on (I believe) the Rocky River or Little River. This would be in either Abbeville or Edgefield County in 1800-1850. Also they could possibly be the parents of Johnson Martin and Margaret Green. On 4-1-1816 a Johnson Martin, Catherine Green, and a George I. Green were buyers at Ester Wood's Estate Sale in Abbeville. So it sounds like the Martins and Greens were neighbors. Anyway, If any of this sounds familiar to you, or anyone, please let me know because, as you can see, I am grasping for straws. Paul WhitePaul@aol.com
I am researching a John Martin family. He was born circa 1750, place unknown (somewhere in New England). However, his son, Dan Martin, was born July 20, 1788 in Hanover, Grafton Co. NH. Dan moved on to Western NY, Genesee County, and died in Pageville, Erie Co. PA. He married Polly Jennison in Gainesville NY on December 19, 1813. Polly was born in Charlton MA, October 13, 1795. Both died in PA in 1871. Would like to connect John. Other children of John are: Samuel Guild Martin (died at age 12), Levi Martin and Diantha Martin Wright. I have a detailed history of the family done circa 1920s from Dan's generation forward which has been updated for my branch. Most of the family moved from New England to Western NY and Northwest PA. Scattered from there. Jim Minnery Elyria, OH

Hi, I'm grasping at straws here... Fran, I've been wondering if my 4g-gf might be a member of James and Azariah's family, and if you've found any indication. I don't know where he was born or who his family was and know very little about him before about 1800. Some census records state he was born in VA, and some researchers think it possible he's from your family, but I know of no record that he is. His name is Thomas Martin, b. 1770-1780, maybe in VA, m. Elizabeth _mnu_, and died in Hawkins Co, TN, His will was written in May, 1847, and proved 5 July 1847. He was a farmer and smith, mentioning his smith tools in his will. He possibly was in Hawkins Co. as early as 1797 or 1799. Thomas & Elizabeth Martin had the following children, all believed born in Hawkins Co. , TN. The children's names are: James, b. 1801 John Mahala Thomas William Aaron Paschal Absalom Elizabeth Abijah, the youngest, b. 1824 Thanks is advance for any info you may have on him - or someone who could be him. Fran, thank you this is very informative. It's quite possible the John I mentioned as born 1740 NC may not be the right line and we are not sure that the 1763 Azariah is the right line either. We don't have solid documentation that either is our line. Our solid documentation lists an Azariah born 1810 in NC, married Jane Bryant and died 1-29-1866 in White Co., IL. We also have verified info. that his father was John Martin born 1781 in Caswell Co., NC, married Rebeckah Stephens and died 10-22-1865 in Belle Rive, IL. We cannot get solid documentation any earlier than that. If you can help us connect the dots we would be very grateful. James A.
