    2. Joyce Reece
    3. Frederica My Shields connection came thru Virginia, into Sevier Co, TN (before it was Sevier Co), on to Jefferson Co, IL then back to Sevier County. He was born, at least before 1770, possibly 1744. I'm not sure. Can't pinpoint him definately. I am told that the 10 brothers that migrated into Sevier Co had descendants that went into Mississippi and Alabama also. I would have to send you to the Shields Mail list to get more difinitive info. The only info I have concerning Return J. Meigs is that which is available on the Monroe County web site. www.tngenweb.org/monroe Those records are the ones he kept while agent for the Cherokee's. 1. Re: [MARTIN-L] Alice Mainda Martin
    2. Margae, In my database, I have Alice Martin listed as a brother of William H. Martin (who was born in Lawrence County, TN). They are listed as the children of Lewis H. Martin and Ales Gramling Martin. Alice Martin was born in 1829 in TN. She married Robert S. Stout on 7-4-1875 in Sullivan County, MO. I know only part of this matches with your information. I do not have John Thomas Overstreet, or a Malissa (Melissa) Martin in my database. In checking my LDS 1880 census CDs, I found Allice M. Overstreete (b. 1849, Illinois) living with John G. Overstreete; there were a bunch of children and also George Martin, age 23 years in the household. They were living in Medicine, Putnam, MO. Alice's father was born in KY; no information about her mother. There was also a Mellissa Overstreet (born 1847 in MO) married to Charles T. Overstreet living in Clay, Sullivan, MO. Her father was born in SC and her mother was born in TN. There is also a William H. Martin, age 59 years, with wife Nancy and mother Annie, listed as living in Jackson, Linn, MO in the 1880 census. Since I am a descendant of James Frost Martin, I would be very interested in getting a copy of the letter you have about this family. 3. Hi Jan! If this is actually "Gremling", which it probably is as my former father-in-law had advised it was spelt that way in the ould days, it would be an absolute riot!! My family are Martins and my childhood sweetheart whom I married (sadly divorced later) is a Gremling. Now, this Gramling-Martin union was born in 1812 and was problably indirectly responsible for the War of 1812 itself if the relationship between my Martins and Gremlings is any indication of that union!! My mum and my father-in-law, God rest them, would be spinning in their graves at the thought! What a fun "discovery", if it is such! Ah, stories I could tell you..... Thanks! Maureen > Absolutely. 3. Here are the names and dates for my William Martin and his family: William Martin...........1820--13/Feb/1860 Sarah A. Martin..........29 Sept/1824 Nancy J. Martin...........1 May/1843 Martha E. Martin & Mary E. Martin............19 Jan/1846 Susannah Martin...........19 Nov/1848 Henry K. Martin...........1 July/1850 (my great grandfather) Talitha C. Martin...........16 Sept/1852 Sallie L. Martin..............28 Feb/1857 Julia A. Martin...............7 Jan/1860 I've just been researching my family since last August and know very little about my Martin lines. This information came from 4 pages of a family Bible I received from my grandmother (Henry K's daughter). Henry's mother or Sarah's mother was a Ketron from VA. The earliest date on these pages is 19 May/1775. Needless to say I have them in an acid-free protective covering. I've no idea what became of the 7 Martin girls. But that's another puzzle for me. Do you have any idea about where in TN your William and Sarah lived? Linda in Yorktown, VA

I have no idea how much I may have been able This list has a very able list administrator and I imagine that she will respond but I also manage some Rootsweb mail lists and thought I might put my 2 cents worth in. Hope you don't mind. This concern about the subject line is a concern on so many lists and causes so much discussion. You have all heard the old saying "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink." As list managers we can post hints, advice, and even rules but we are not sitting right there with that person when those messages are typed. So much of what goes on with any list is dependent upon the folks on that list. You are right - it is so much better for everyone if folks would change the subject line to reflect the content of their message. They might get a better response and it would be helpful to others on the list. But... sorry... some folks just don't do it. As for your question about the list manager deleting any message with an incorrect subject line before it hits the list. That is possible in that the list manager can put this list on moderated status. That would mean that ALL mail would automatically go to the list manager - that manager would then have to read all the mail - make a decision concerning its appropriateness to the list - and then send it on to the list. Now let's think about that for a moment. You folks are upset because your mailbox contains messages with inappropriate subject lines and you feel that it wastes your time. Can you imagine what this would do to the manager's mail box and how much time the manager would need to take to do this? They deal with the folks who sometimes aren't too nice, they often get yelled at, they weed through all the spam aimed at the list and diverted by the rootsweb system, etc. all on a volunteer status. Putting the list on moderated status also means that the mail would not be sent until the list manager could read it. Thus it would be delayed. In my case, it would be each evening as I work. Most list managers deal with more than one mail list. They also have families and many work. I would hate to add the extra burden of moderating the list to our list manager's plate. So let's try again - here are some hints that might make your posting to any mail list more efficient. 1. Please change the subject line to reflect the topic. 2. It is helpful to put surnames in all caps. 3. Please include dates and locations if known. There are a lot of "Charles Martin" folks out there in various locations at various times. AND... thanks for listening. Take care - Emma

    3. Hi all, I too am a list manager and you do not want a moderated list. If one is truly interested in finding lost relatives, a quick review of each email message can be done without taking much time. The delete button works real good when needed. Emma, I don't know how many are on this list, but I only saw two messages that were fussing. That's a small number if the list has hundreds. Of course, you and I are causing Spam by writing but that's ok too.
