    1. Re: [MARTIN-L] Leaving your name on a stone...
    2. Hi, Billie, Yes it is - I wish I had come up with it. I've had several messages discussing concerns about moisture getting into the bag if it's skewered into the ground - which are valid concerns. Even if tape is used, it would soon peel off and leave a sticky residue - especially in our southern climes! People have suggested laminating the card with those inexpensive sheets you can buy (and she uses a wire-stemmed artificial flower instead of a stick); using two different size bags with no hole through the inner bag; and I love what one lady in the TX/OK area said so I'm going to paste it in: "There is an old practice of leaving a note in mason jar , In fact some visitors left information on any upcoming clean up dates or reunions at the tombstones. I gather records and present cemetery talks--mason jars with the name of the person was common here through the 1960's. You never moved one from where it sat except to mow and then put it right back where it came from. it was a valid grave marker.   sometimes I have seen a smaller jar inside a larger one with marbles filling the space between them. Really pretty and they were placed very carefully. Always used mineral oil or vaseline inside the lid ring, to seal it better from ground moisture." Isn't that great? Well, I'm going to try one of these methods this spring and see what happens! 2. A few weeks ago, someone wrote to one of the lists I belong to, and asked if anyone had ever left their name and contact info on a family gravestone. It seemed to me that he/she was hesitant about doing it for one reason or another. I thought it was a very interesting idea - and a few people responded to the question. Some said they had, and were contacted. I thought I kept that email, because I liked the idea, but I can't find it now - so I'm posting this on all my lists. I was browsing old "Missing Links" and "Somebody's Links" today and just happened to run across the following contribution. I removed the sender's name, because I didn't contact them - but here's the rest of their message: MISSING LINKS: A Weekly Newsletter for Genealogists Vol. 3, No. 18, 1 May 1998 Copyright (c) 1996-98 Julia M. Some were in fields or out in the woods. On the tombstone I would place a 3x5 card with a note saying who was buried there and my relationship and address. I would put it in a ziplock bag and tape it to the tombstone securely. When we got back to California after a month I had letters from cousins I did not know even existed. Some saw the message, copied the info down and relayed it through the community. I really felt that my ancestors played a great role in my finding info about them. 3. Hope, Mine were Morrow County, too, but I don't think we connect - mine came much later than yours...probably 1917 or 18!! It's fun to think we MIGHT have a connection somewhere, though. My great grandfather was John Morris Martin, m. Willa Mae Whited in 1909 in Russell Co., Virginia. His father was a John also. It's interesting though because on my father's side - Keller - the family came to Ohio sometime after 1810, from PA. 2. For those researching in and around Shelby Co Alabama into the family of Jacob Martin, born SC cl8l4. From information I have his first wife was Beadie Ann Seale and his second wife was Bedy Ann Kelly. Strange about the two wives with similar names. I have noticed the names spelled Bedy, Beddy, Beddie, Beadie, Biddy, etc. I have the family of Jackson Martin, born cl820 in Georgia....in Alabama by early l840s. ...in unknown Alabama county. I have been interested in the family of Jacob Martin because my family has for several generations used the name Beddie, Beddy as given names for both male and female..... Will exchange information on these families. Does anyone have the names of siblings for Jacob Martin born cl8l4? I have a list of his children if this would assist anyone. John Kulbeth
