Here's the story; hope someone can help us. We're stuck in Morgan County, OHIO. Andrew Martin (my great great great grandfather) and his wife Elizabeth. Andrew and Elizabeth were born in Maryland in about 1807. Andrew's parents were born in Maryland; Elizabeth's (surname unknown) were born in Virginia. Andrew settled in the Jackson Township, Morgan Co.(later Noble Co.) area, we think, about 1837. They had moved on before 1870 (to Illinois) as there were no Martin's in the area in the 1870 census. Our Andrew and at least some of the sons, James Henry (my great great grandfather), and Andrew J. (always known as Jack), had moved on to Illinois. Andrew Sr. to the Kendall County area. Jack and James Henry were both found in the Piatt County census with their families; James Henry (1870 census); Jack (1880 census). Andrew's other children were (that we can find): Samuel, William, Sarah (may have been married to WILLIAMS), Margaret (married to John Mincks/stayed in Ohio); Elizabeth, youngest son Charles W. died in infancy. Children of James Henry Martin and Emmaretta Jane Flickinger: Charles Elliot Martin b. 1868; Lydia Ann Martin Boylan b. 1869; George Edward Martin (my great grandfather) b. 1871; Cora Loretta Martin Estes b. 1877; Francis Andrew Martin b. 1882; Ernest Alvin Martin (I think he was called "Ginger") b. 1887. I descend from George Edward's daughter Winifred A. Martin. Any connections or leads would be appreciated.
All Martins found in the records of Hillcrest Cemetery located on Stanton Rd. in East Point , Ga. Are listed below. This does not include names buried before 1922 back to 1893 (Establishment) as a fire destroyed those records.(If marked, could be found via a foot search) Also, does not include burials from the past 7 years as recent burials were not entered. Some, even though buried in years where burials were being entered in or were not destroyed in the fire may also be missing. If this is the case and you are related and know for sure of a burial not listed, please notify us. If you see someone in your family line and want to know if a cause of death is listed, please email and I will check to see if it happens to be included with that particular burial. I would appreciate any available information on Lydia or John. Both are buried at the Union Cemetery in Powell, Mo. My records indicate that John was born in North Carolina May 1, 1817 and died May 5, 1905. Also my database indicates that Lydia was born January 20, 1832 in Tennessee and died December 28, 1917. I was told they had four children: Christopher Washington Hollaway born December 19, 1851 in North Carolina and died December 6, 1932 in McFarland, California. Christopher wed Alice Jane Smith on December 19, 1880. Alice was born January 16, 1861 in Elm Springs, Arkansas and died November 20, 1906 also in Elm Springs. Alice is buried in the Elm Springs Cemetery. I also have four children listed; one female without date of birth, another female born September 22, 1881, John A. born September 5, 1883, and William Marion born January 8, 1886. Henry R. Hollaway born April 24, 1860 in Georgia and died February 15, 1914. Wed Fannie E. Aaron who was born November 20, 1859 and died February 4, 1914. Both are buried in Arkansas. My information has seven children listed; Henry Jefferson born February 21, 1884, Ollie born February 11,1883, Anna born March 18, 1885, and Lark H. born in 1887, Allie born in 1893, Mary Adeline born August 2, 1894, and Jess William born August 31, 1899. Mary Jane Hollaway was born 1864 in Georgia. She wed Thomas Jefferson Modlin and had nine children; Elmer Wright born January 9, 1895, James Ishum, Minnie, Sadie, Thomas Edward, William Orlando, Jasper Franklin born November 2, 1862, Charlie C. born February 26, 1868, and Lydia born December 27, 1883. The only information on William is that he was born in Arkansas in 1868. Any information that could be shared would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bob Hollaway Henry R. Hollaway born April 24, 1860 Mary Jane Hollaway born in 1864 William Hollaway born in 1868
Hi Jessica, My mother was Alice Susan Martin, born in Philadelphia. Her family lived on Vassar Street in Germantown, which is now a subdivision of Philadelphia. My Martins go back to 1875 which is when they, James and Susanna Martin, emigrated to Philadelphia from Cornwall, England. They came from Bodmin, Cornwall. I have no George's in my files, I only go back to the father of my great grandfather, William Martin. That is one of the reasons that I joined the Martin mailing list at rootsweb. I would suggest that you research the LDS, or Mormon Genealogical Society. They have a vast collection of data from all over the world, and they make it easy to research no matter what country your ancestors originated. They also have many research offices across the US and Canada, where you can do this research. On the internet, you can visit familysearch.org to access records of the LDS. Susan Hunsicker
Jessica, The census years I have access to for the state of Pennsylvania that are indexed are: 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, & 1920. The ancestry and roots web message boards are helpful. There are many helpful web sites and other avenues of searching for information. I will be happy to sahre that info with you. Results for census search year 1920 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: There are 197 George MARTIN'S in the 1920 census for the state of Pennsylvania. There are 41 in Philadelphia. None are indexed with the middle name Elwood nor the middle initial "E." Twenty-three are indexed with no middle initial. My suggestion is for you to get a notebook and write down everything you do know starting with you. Include: your full name, date of birth, full name of parents using maiden names for females( if known), date of your marriage, name of spouse, names of children born. Include dates & places of: birth, marriage, death, etc.. Another helpful tool is the family group sheet. You can print & use these for free from the following web site: http://www.heritagequest.com/groupsheets/index.html When requestiong a census look up include year/state/surname in the email subject line. Please include the following information in the body of the email when requesting a look up: census year, state, city & town if known, full name, full name of spouse, name(s) of child(ren), age, place of birth, & race. It may be helpful to include nicknames. I understand you may not have all of this info for requesting a search but keep in mind the more info we receive the more likely we will find a match for you. I look forward to hearing from you again. ~Jeanette Nelson ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jessica Martin" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, January 18, 2005 9:24 AM Subject: [MARTIN-L] George Elwood Martin from Philadelphia > My dad was born in the 1940s, his dad was born in the 1910s and my great > grandfather was born in the late 1800s. > > I am just starting my geneological search. My dad was born in the 1940s, his dad was born in the 1910s and my great grandfather was born in the late 1800s. I am just starting my geneological search. I would love to find out about my great great grandfather, and his father, etc. I guess census info would be a good place to start. What are other sources of info? This is my father and grandfather, and great grand father, all with the same name. Does anyone on this list have information about this branch of the Martin name? Thanks, Jessica

I'd be glad to do lookups and make copies of wartime service and pension records (Revolution, Civil War, 1812, Spanish-American, Philippines, Mexican and Indian wars), for a reasonable fee (to cover my time and copy prices.) Going through the archives staff can take months -- it'll take me about two weeks, in general, though there can be exceptions. And, of course, I am a real live person to interact with instead of a form. I'm well-acquainted with research. I'm also a genealogist myself, not a profiteer (I have a day job!). I'm only offering because I love the topic and because I know how difficult it is to get ahold of these particular records, since they aren't all on microfilm. Hi Kathy, I have a Martin G great grandfather, James, who had a son born to he and his wife while he was stationed on the Isle of Malta, we think before he emigrated to the USA. I don't know how to find out if he was indeed stationed there as a part of the Brittish Royal forces, because we could not find a the birth of this Great uncle of mine, Charles Martin in the area of England where they were supposed to live. This is all given to request information on other Military situations that might connect to the USA but not in the USA military. Can you help me? Susan Hunsicker [email protected]
