Hi Friends, Our brick wall: Our Benjamin Martin (no known middle name) was born March 10, 1816 (as taken from his burial record) in PA (as noted on the 1850 census), married in 1837 Mary Thompson (also born in PA) in Marshall County WV where they lived and had six children (Caroline, James, John, Oliver Perry, Riley & Martha). The 1860 census puts them in Knox County Ohio where they had two more children (Charles C. & Mary). Other records show he moved his family to Marysville, Union Co, Ohio where he died and was buried June 13, 1866. Have lots of info on his children, but cannot find Benjamin Martin's or Mary Thompson's parents. D. Hi, I have a seen a Benjamin P. Martin born 1813 in Wilkes, North Carolina. His father was James Martin and Elvira Bryan. My gggrandfather Sylvester Martin born 1815 came from North Carolina to Ga and then to Al. My ggrandfather was also Benjamin Franklin Martin born Barbour co. al one of many children. This family then were located in Geneva co. al. I would love to find where in North Carolina Sylvester Martin came from. There were many Benjamin Martins in this area some came from North Carolina and some from South Carolina, There was some that went to centerpoint Texas in the 1870s and 80s. Do you know what area your Benjamin was in and his middle name Barbara
It sounds as though you are just getting started in Genealogy? Since you are not offering any information except name, birth year, and death year and place of death. I am going to give you a list of things to search on, and tell you where to find these things, in case this will help you or others. #1. The first census year taken when Clark Martin was alive would be 1860, however if he was a 2 year old slave at that time, he would not have had a surname. If his parents, or mother at least, had already been freed, he might be listed. Slaves were not given surnames until after they had been freeded, called "manumission", or until the federal government, end of Civil War (after 1864) freed them as a whole. However, I have seen in census' in New York City, for example, even in the 1790 census, were slaves were listed on the census, with first names, under the owner's name. For example: John Jones Betsey #2. The next census is 1870 and your Clark Martin should be listed, he would be 12 yrs old. He should be with his parents, or mother only, or perhaps he is out with a different family either related, or perhaps he is 'working out' as a live in farm or domestic laborer. I am Not sure if RACE is shown on the 1870 census? If so, that would help to narrow the search down. To access the 1860 and 1870 census you can go to your closest local Public Library, you can call them first by telephone and ask if they happen to offer a computor program online called "HeritageQuestonline", if so, you go to the library and sit down and search the 2 above mentioned census. The other way to access them, is to find your local, nearest Family History Center, which is owned of the LDS church, but is not a religious place, it is open to the public for genealogy research. That place offers, Free of Charge, access to www.ancestry.com which will allow you to search all the census years. The LDS church, thru FHC made a policy across the USA that every FHC should have FREE use of www.ancestry.com . You must go within their working hours and use their computor, but it can be done. Another way to access census is to pay www.ancestry.com a yearly fee to access the data from your home computor, anytime you need it. Obviously this is nice. Another way is to join www.godfrey.org for $35.00 per year, at home, you can access many census years, but not ALL the years. There are also several census years which are FREE and ONLINE, so you can look for those by searching at www.google.com , I have found many 1850 census records that way. #4. the 1880 census is FREE and available to be searched online at www.familysearch.org . Click on: 1. search for ancestors 2. click on census 3. specifiy 1880 US census 4. type in Clark Martin born 1858, give 2 year plus and minus to the age, incase it was off slightly, and put in the RACE, which should narrow it down. If that does not take you directly to HIM, then leave off RACE, perhaps he was not recorded as Black, don't let that throw you off his trail, take everything into possiblitity. Please write back with your results so we can all help you further, we are all helping each other here, that is the real purpose of the mailing list. My ancestors are: William M. William, This lady and her cousin have been researching the Martins from S.c. to Macon co and some of them to Barbour co. al. She was looking for her ggrandfather in Barbour co so I checked out the Fl. Civil war pensions which are online and there he was in Kynesville fl. close to Marianna fl. about 30 milses from my house. They traveled around a lot back in the 1880s even if it was on horse and wagon. Her name is Leta and you can e-mail her at [email protected]
Thanks to all of you for Martin Information. I appreciate any help. I am on webtv...not a computer, so I can't access every site. Please pass my Jackson Martin info on his and Nancy's children to any Martin's researching in Ms that you know. Stella
It was in Macon county 1850 she was listed as Mary A. Martin I don't have any idea what her maiden name was. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, February 23, 2005 11:36 AM Subject: Re: [MARTIN-L] Re: JACKSON MARTIN Mother > Hey William, I am butting into your conversation with Barbara, but did > you say your Martins were living with a widowed Mother in 1850? For those researching Jackson MARTIN in Georgia and Alabama.....there was yet another Jackson Martin in Randolph Co Alabama as listed in the l860 census. He is believed to have been in Upson Co Georgia in the l840s but not found in the l850 census. In l870 his family was in Freestone Co Texas. This Jackson Martin was born cl8l6-l820 in Ga. Was listed in the Randolph Co census as Jack Martin...wife Mary Ann (Sanford?)... John K.
Hey William, I am butting into your conversation with Barbara, but did you say your Martins were living with a widowed Mother in 1850? Which census is that, please and what was her name? Thanks so much, I am looking for a Peggy Martin. Might be Margaret but I think the mother of my Martins was Peggy Sapp from SC born about 1788/1790..Where did yours come from? Anyone feel free to write off line if we are getting too personal with this, for the others. Thank you again...Stella
William, Were your Martins from Macon co. al. If so I know someone who has done a lot of reseach on the Martins in this county? Barbara
Stella, I must have deleted your other e-mail did you say Jackson Martins wife was Nancy Ann Sawyer and they married in Alabama Jan. 21 1841 Alabama don`t know the co. Let me know if this is the right one. Barbara
Hi Barbara I didn't know that Benjamin G. Martin had a son named Jackson. If he is the same one Benjamin is a brother to my gggrandfather Jiles B. Martin. It is thier father I can't seem to find. In the 1850 census they are living with thier mother who is listed as head of household. Thanks, William
