Hello, I am researching the Martin families of Reidsville, Rockingham Co NC. 1790 census, Salisbury District, page 256, all listed on the same page: Andrew Martin, 1 male Head of household, 2 other males, 2 females. Andrew Martin, 1 male head of household, 2 other males, 2 females. John Martin, 1 male head of household, 2 other males, 3 females. In 1779 John Martin recorded a first Deed there, then in 1783 Andrew Martin recorded a first Deed there, and then in 1784 James Martin recorded a first Deed there. The specific area is at Troublesome Creek and Hogans Creek, and this area later became known as Reidsville, NC. In 1793 Bailey Martin is also shown at this same location with a Deed. In the 1800 census, all listed on page 471 together, is Andrew Martin, Baily Martin and John Martin. Bailey Martin was married to Lydia, who wrote a will in 1835, and it was probated in 1841. I believe she was born about 1778. Her son Bailey Martin (Jr.) was born 1796, and he lived his entire life in the same area and is buried there. I believe that Bailey Martin, Sr was born about 1778. In the 1800 census he is listed with 4 small boys, 2 older boys, 1 teenage boy, himself as head of Household, and 1 small girl , and 1 wife. Bailey Martin, Jr b. 1796 would count for one of the 4 small boys. When Lydia wrote her will she only mentioed a son Micajah Martin and her son Bailey, and the children and wife of Bailey. In the 1800 census, listed 2 lines down is John Martin with 3 little boys, and himself as head of household, 2 little girls, 2 older young girls, 1 wife, and 2 slaves. In the 1800 census, listed next door to John is Andrew Martin, he appears to be an older man, with just himself and his wife in the home. In the 1810 census, listed all together on page 27, are: David Herron, then after one line is Andrew Martin, then next line is Bailey Martin, then 2 lines down is John Reede. Is this the Reede family for which Reidsville was named? In the 1810 census, David Herron is a young head of household, with one daughter and 1 wife, and 5 slaves I believe that daughter is Isabelle Herron, who in 1818 married Bailey Martin, Jr. b. 1796. They are both buried together with their sons and families at Lowes United Methodist Church in Reidsville. In the 1810 census Andrew Martin is again listed as alone in the home with just a wife, and now he has 4 slaves. In the 1810 census Bailey Martin (Sr.) is listed with 1 smal boy, 1 older boy, and 2 teenaged boys, and himself as head of household, also 4 small girls, 1 older girl, and 1 wife, and no slaves. In the 1820 census all together on page 352, is John Martin, next line is Bailey Martin, and next line in Lydia Martin, and next line is Isabella Young. In the 1820 census John Martin is listed with a wife, 2 daughters and 2 sons. In the 1820 census Bailey Martin is listed as a newlywed man, having been married 2 years before to Isabella Herron. They have daughter Mary Martin born between 1818 and 1820 census. This then shows that Bailey Martin (Sr.) has died prior to the 1820 census, and his son Bailey Jr. and possibly a son John Martin, who is older than Bailey b. 1796, are both living next door to their widowed mother Lydia. In the 1820 census Lydia Martin is listed as an older woman, living entirely alone in the house, obviously she is a widow. Her next door neighbor is Isabella Young, and she is likewise an older woman living alone. I believe that Isabella Young might be the mother of Robert Young, who married Mary, and had a daughter named Mary M. Young b. 1825 NC, that married William M. Martin b. 1825 NC, the nephew of Bailey Martin b. 1796. Bailey Martin (Jr.) b. 1796 lived his whole life in Reidsville, NC and died there in 1870, his wife died first in 1866. Bailey Martin and John Martin are likely brothers. I have listed all the children of Bailey Martin, and they all stayed with his in Reidsville, NC except one son followed his cousin William M. Martin first to Henderson Co TN, and then later to Navarro Co Texas. John Martin may have left many children, and I believe that William M. Martin b. 1826 NC is one of them. I have not confirmed any other siblings of William M. Martin b. 1826. I am very interested in any information about the John Martin who would have been listed in 1820 at Reidsville, Rockingham Co, NC. I believe he might be my earliest ancestor. He would have been born about 1785-1795, that time frame I am estimating. Also interested in Micajah Martin b. slightly prior to 1796 NC, s/o Bailey and Lydia Martin, of Reidsville, Rockingham Co NC. Best regards, Lilly Martin

Hello, I want to thank each of you who replied to my posting of the Martin families in Rockingham Co NC. I am in the process of identifying each Martin listed in the 1790, 1810, 1820 census of Rockingham Co NC. This is a great exercise for me. According to the 1880 census, Cynthia Martin (then Cynthia Hutchinson) was born in Georgia; her father was born in Georgia and her mother was born in South Carolina. Cynthia's parents may have been Littleberry Martin and Deborah Cook. Does anyone have any information that refers to this family, either corroborating or disproving it? Cynthia was supposed to have had siblings Greenberry (male, b. 1820) and Serena (female, b. after 1810, probably SC). Best wishes, Lawrence Bouett San Diego, California

My Issac Martin was from Indiana and then La. ( 1820-1870) However, I notice that you have an Elrod in your tree, it looks like one of the children married an Elrod if I understood correctly. All Elrods are related. Their tree is well researched. I am going by memory here-- The first Elrod in the US was Christopher in the 1660s. They were Germans and Moravians back in Moravia or part of Germany. There are diaries writen by several of them, and one of them is mentioned in some type of very early type of congressional record-- it mentions the Elrod testifying that they would not fight but would supply food and beef to soldiers. My mother was an Elrod. Some somehow we are atleast very distantly related. Karen Moore Kerr __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
