It's nice to see all the activity! I haven't asked about my "brickwall" for some time now. This looks like a good time to do so. My gg grandfather, Lucius Cary Martin is consistently shown on MS census with the data above, i.e., b. in VA in 1797. His brother, William, was born in 1795 in VA. They both died in Waynesboro, Wayne Co., MS. Both died after 1860. Lucius married Mary Ann Russell, according to family information, but there is a question about whether he married ____ Hough. Both families were nearby in MS, and both originated in VA. It is possible that they traveled together. William married Jane Sims. Lucius was in MS with several pieces of land as early as 1810. He had 8 children, but several died in the Civil War. They were Richard T., Pickney (Pinckney?) T., William, Oliver P., Francis "Frank" Hough (my ggrandfather,) Elisa, Roan "Dock", and Lucius Cary. Family lore says that his grandfather came from London through the Barbadoes, but there is nothing to substantiate that. There is quite a bit of information in MS, because of land records, etc., but I have not been able to locate anything in VA. There was a Cary Martin in Albemarle Co., VA in the 1820's. Lucius Cary was the Viscount of the Falklands in the early 1600's, and he was celebrated in a poem by Robert Burns. It is possible that he was named for that historical/literary figure. On the other hand, there was a Lucius Cary (last name Cary) in Fluvanna County, VA in the 1820's. There might be some relationship with that family. I have poked around in several clerks' offices in VA, to no avail. ANY help would be appreciated. LaFaye Sutkin
With all the activity, thought I would try again from my Martin side. trying to find my GGGF John M.'s father. Can anyone help? John M. Good news for you. The ELrods have to be one of the most researched lines in the U.S. They were of German descent and here before we were the U.S. I think that the first one was Christopher and his family in what is now New Jersy in the late 1600s or very early 1700s. They have all family lines mapped out after that. They were in N.Y.,Penn., Va., and S.C. Some went to Il.,Texas, and one went back to N.Y. I am also an Elrod descendent but can not claim to have done all that research. I am certain that if you contact someone on the Elrod list or forum etc. you will get an answer about the time line and events about your particular branch. My Martins and Elrods did not connect like yours did. My Elrods were the branch that went to Texas. My Martins were from Indiana and then came to La. before the Civil War. Issach Martin b. in Indiana went to Avoyelles Parish,La. and was listed on the 1870 census. He was the third husband of my ggg grandmother, Sarahann Lewis Wilson Hagewood who was born in 1820 in Miss. and was in La. by 1844 when she first married. I imagine that Issach Martins time of birth would be about the same. Sarahann and Issach had one child who died named Barbara Gayle. She died as a young child before 1880. Mr. Martin was step-father to Resin Stelle Wilson and Indiana Wilson. Ironicaly, the Family Bible shows that Sarahann Wilson nee Lewis may have been related to Martins before the marriage. Sarahann Lewis married Ludson Wilson and her younger brother and sister lived with the newly weds in La. They were James Madison Lewis 16 and Alsa Martin 13. They were also on the 1850 census. The first husband Ludson Wilson died in 1859. Sarahann and children lived with new husband Charles Hagewood on 1860. He died at the beginning of the war, and she remarried immeadiately to Issach Martin and remained so until they died in the late 1890s. Anyone have Issach or Alsa Martin in La. ? Peggy my first five years was fantastic...I traveled (before the internet)...to walk through cemeteries...and sit in courthouses most all day several days a month.Wish I had a dollar for every volume I have gone through...and reels of film I turned by hand in libraries, to view!!! ..and went all the way to N.C But there is no record of my Jacob Martin...he is lost to "no records" I know the descendants of my Grandfather...none of them know anything more than his name that has been handed down. If he is in any early census...there is no way to tell it is him...I have them all...from the 1790 one, on down.I have searched every place you can search for a marriage to a Peggy, or a Margaret Sapp...unless it is in some clergyman's journal...tucked away, it does not exist. I have been paying to get old newspapers...nothing fits the dates. To make a long story short...I don't think a stone has been left unturned, I have been very serious about my family.Years and years of it. He just can not be identified, unless I had a middle initial, or a place of birth or his wife's history or find him in a census, or something. I let people die who could have told me...but I didn't go ask them! His sons' census only gives S.C.So I am ending the search for him, since I cannot devote the time anymore.. if any family researcher ever wants to take it up...since information is getting so plentiful on the internet, ...more power to them. Thanks to any of you that tried to help me find him...you know who you are and I appreciate you very much for your efforts. Stella
