    1. [MARTIN] SC-GA-AL Martins
    2. Mary Hengstebeck & Doug Martin
    3. Everybody seems to have a brick wall. Mine is Simeoin Baxter Martin. The 1850 census has him in Pike County, Alabama with his birth date and place being "about" 1814 in Georgia. The 1860 census has him in in Caney Township, Ouachita County, Arkansas and has his birth date as "about 1812" The 1870 census has him still in Caney Township with a birth date of "about 1811". The 1880 census has him still in Caney Township and he does not show up on subsequent census or county tax records. Family tradition has his parents being from South Carolina but no name has been identified for either parent. He was married in South Carolina to Mary Virginia Smyth (various family letters have her last name as Smith, Smyth, or Smythe). The date of the marriage was 1821 and his first son, Francis Marion Martin, was born the same year but his birth place was Pike County Alabama. There is some confusion concerning Mary Smyth as her son, Francis Marion Martin, married a Mary Smith who was from Alabama. Anyway, any help that is available will be much appreciated. Doug Martin

    3. Many of the Martin's listed in the Dawes & Miller apps will be descended from Nancy Ward.Cherokee Beloved Woman of the Overhills. Her daughter Elizabeth was born to Briant Ward. Elizabeth had children and co-habitated with Joseph Martin of ABlemarle Co VA. I'd advise anyone interested in their Cherokee lineages to look at two publications....just to get started....they would be Dr. Emmett Starr's "History of the Cherokee Indian" and David Keith Hampton's ''Cherokee Mixed Bloods''. These two publications will get you started. www.accessgenealogy.com is an great online source for aid. 2. My brick wall is James Martin, a primitive Baptist Preacher, who migrated from South Carolina to southern Indiana in the early 1800's. He was married to Milly and his sons, Charles b. 1791 SC, married Frankie Rook and Thomas b. 1796 m Fannie Marcus migrated with him. There was intermarriage with McDonald, Williams and Crabtree families in southern Indiana and enroute from South Carolin in Kentucky. Is anyone able to help me? 1. Re: [MARTIN] Native American/African MARTINs?
    2. Hi Lynn! I am a Martin and had my DNA checked and a melungeon specialist thought my profile showed melungeon ancestry because I am mixed native american, european, and subsaharan african (according to dna) - I started looking into melungeons after that and found the MARTIN-CARRICO melungeon connection in my family. My Martins always claimed Cherokee and White so I didn't know about the subsaharan african until I took the dna test and started looking at the melungeons. The social construction of race in U.S. history has definately distorted our understandings about ethnicity and a lot of people might be surprised to find out that they might not have understood their full ethnic identity. I am so proud of my african heritage that I discovered and folks might want to be open to finding more than what they expect based on what we were taught to believe. in regards to the patterns of movement... I still know little about why they moved to Missouri and Illinois. I am interested in researching that region's history to add a better social & historical understanding to my own pieces of the puzzle. Also, latest info I have shows these Martins as being connected to french Martins. Good luck! Carolina

    3. The first impression of the Martin line that I am researching is discovered in Pennsylvania. Daniel Martin was born about 1758. He married Martha (Mary) Keatley, and they lived in Cumberland County PA. There were six children: John D., Sarah (Salley), Jane (Jean), Rebecca, Mary (Polly), and Anney. John D. Martin is my g-g-g-grandfather. On 3 May 1801, Daniel appeared on a tax list in Montgomery County VA. He was the progenitor of practically all of the Martins in the Athens, Mercer County, West Virginia, area. Daniel died on 20 Feb 1824 at the age of 66. Both he and Martha are buried in the Martin Cemetery, located on the Daniel Martin land tract, Whitley’s Branch of Walker’s Creek, near Staffordsville, VA. I am looking for information as to the parents of Daniel. This has been my “brick wall” for many years. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jack Martin
