My gggGrandfather was a Captain, at first and later he was a full Colonel and was in the Revolutionary war thru out the war. He is my DAR patriot. He was one of the Captains whose beginning was the Culpepper Minute Men. Thomas Marshall was also one of the original Minute men. He later was a Colonel and married Mary Randolph Keith of Fauquier County, Virginia. Thomas and Mary were the parents of Charlotte Ashmore Marshall and Basil Duke (Dr.) of Woodford County, Kentucky. Their fourth child was Captain (Navy) Nathaniel Wilson Duke born 1806 and died in July, 1850 who married Mary Ann Rives Pickett Currie on October 3, 1833. Mary was born on the 17th of December 1813 and died February 24, 1847. Mary's parents were James Currie and Caroline Rives Pickett which accounts for all of Mary's names. Captain and Mary Anne are the parents of Basil Wilson Duke of Civil War fame. "General Basil Wilson Duke" rode for the Confederate Army with General John Hunt Morgan. He too! k Morgan's command when Morgan was killed. He wrote several books about Morgan and their escapades during the Civil War. I have "cut and pasted" some of the above from my BUFORD book. Thomas Marshall is mentioned in "The History of the Culpeper Minute Men Battalion 1775." My DAR patriot (one of them) is Colonel Abraham Buford. I read your email with interest. I have a civil war photo album of my gg grandfather's who contains a signed photo of General Basil Duke and General John Hunt Morgan who served my ancestor. Both were handsome men. This is Thomas Beverly's brother, Samuel Marshall's autobiography: The following taken from "Biographys of Texas" I found in Bonham, Fannin Co. TX, library. A salesman would come to your home and for $5.00 you could have your biography included in the coming edition. This is what Samuel E. Marshall submitted for print: "S. E. Marshall, a prominent merchant of Whitewright, Texas, and an early settler of Grayson Co. was born in Green Co. KY, May 28, 1838, and is a son of Beverly and Elizabeth (Barnett) Marshall. Beverley Marshall was a native of Virginia, but when quite a young man went to Kentucky and settled in Green County where he employed himself in planting until his death in 1873, at the age of eighty. Mrs. Elizabeth Marshall was a native of Green Co. KY, and was a daughter of Colonel William Barnett, a pioneer of the county in which his daughter was born. S. E. Marshall is the second of three children, still living, born to his parents, the other two being -- Thomas B. and James E. In 1862, S. E. Marshall enlisted in the Confederate army, Thirty-fourth Texas volunteers, under Colonel Terrell, and served west of the Mississippi River until the close of the war. At Arkansas Post he was taken prisoner and was taken to Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois, where he was confined five months and then exchanged. He rejoined his regiment and did further service, but on April 8,1864, he was again captured, but this time between Mansfield and Pleasant Hill, in Louisiana, and was exchanged. On his return to his regiment, he was placed in the quartermaster's department, in which he served until the close of the dreadful struggle. He then returned to his home in Kentucky, where he remained until 1868, at which early day he removed to Grayson Co. TX, which has since been his place of residence, and where he was engaged in prosperous farming until 1884. In this last-mentioned year he moved to Whitewright and until 1886 conducted a hardware and grocery store, and then opened his present furniture store, in which is kept everything appertaining to an establishment of that character. In 1860 Mr. Marshall married Miss Mary C., daughter of Sam White, of Kentucky, and three children blessed this marriage. These are named -- Rosa Lee, Beulah and Barnett B. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marsha Hamilton" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, September 27, 2004 3:47 PM Subject: [MARSHALL] 2 Thomas Marshall's > I have two Thomas Marshall....one is Thomas Beverly Marshall b abt 1829 > md to Emily Francis Smith b Nov 14, 1832 of Green Co., KY who had at least > one son, William A.
