Author: GregoryBalvin Surnames: MARSHALL, WHALEY Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.marshall/4793/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I found the following family in the 1851 Canada Census. Residing in Dunham township, Missisquoi County, Quebec, Canada. MARSHALL, THOMAS - age 67 - farmer - Episcopal MARSHALL, FRANCES - age 61 - Wes. Methodist MARSHALL, FANNY - age 40 - Wes. Methodist MARSHALL, MARIAN (Spelling?) - age 22 - Episcopal MARSHALL, JAMES - age 19 - laborer - Episcopal MARSHALL, JOHN - age 18 - laborer - Episcopal This may be the family of my great-grandfather, Alfred Marshall. All I know of him is that in the civic record of his marriage, in Northbridge MA, 1883, his parents John Marchal and Anglice Whaley. Alfred Marshall married Julie Lachance, in a French Catholic parish. I don't know if either of the two were literate. So the spelling above may have been what the clerk heard! I also found in the same 1851 Canadian Census, in Dunham township, also, a listing for an Anglicia Whaley, age 16. Maybe I'm being too presumptuous, but as she is also listed as Episcopal, (no other family listed) and of a similar age to John Marshall, from the same town, I thought it was a good possibility. My cousins in Massachusetts indicated that Alfred was a non-Catholic, converting on his deathbed. Then, he was buried in a Catholic cemetery, in 1905. Does any of this ring a bell, out there. Thank you for any suggestions. GregBalvin, - central OH Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
