GWEN BARRY NOVA SCOTIA IN THE FIRST PARAGRAPH OF YOUR E-MAIL BELOW YOU MENTION THAT YOU HAVE BUILT AN INVENTORY OF MARSHALL RECORDS FROM EVERY COUNTY IN IRELAND. I AM A DIRECT DESCENDENT OF JACOB MARSHILL, SR ca.1655-1743 of IRELAND. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE GRANGE MEETING HOUSE AT CHARLEMONT IN NORTHERN IRELAND. THIS IS IN COUNTY TYRONE AND IS CALLED RELIGIOUS SOCIETY OF FRIENDS (QUAKERS). I HAVE WORSHIPED IN THIS MEETING HOUSE. IT IS STILL THERE BUT HAS BEEN REBUILT. THIS GRANGE MEETING HOUSE WAS SETTLED IN 1660. His wife was Margaret Edwards ca.1660-1739. I have no record of any of his children except Jacob Marshill, Jr. who came to America in 1729 with his wife, Ann Griffith, and 2 sons, John who was 9 years old and William who was 5 years old. I am descended from John and have my family traced all the way down to the present day. My son, Dr. Daniel P. Marshall, has made many trips to the British Isles including Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales trying to secure more information. I have been to Ireland and England with him. We published a 672 page book on our family in 2002 giving all the data up to that time down to the present day. It has over 30,000 names indexed and 3000 surnames. The book only covers one of Jacob Marshill, Sr.'s G G Grandsons, SIMON GRANSER MARSHALL, SR., who I am descended. WE ARE UP AGAINST A BRICK WALL NOW AS --------------------------------------------WE ARE TRYING TO DETERMINE ------------------HOW DID WE GET TO IRELAND? WE KNOW THAT WE ARE NOT NATIVE IRISH. DID WE COME FROM SCOTLAND, ENGLAND OR WALES? BOTH MY SON AND I HAVE HAD OUR DNA TESTED. WE TESTED A 100 YEAR OLD JACOB MARSHALL IN IRELAND WHO CAME FROM SCOTLAND. THERE WAS NO MATCH SO THAT DID NOT PROVE ANYTHING. MAYBE, IF WE COULD FIND OUT IF JACOB MARSHILL, SR HAD ANY MORE CHILDREN OR WHO HIS PARENTS WERE IT MIGHT HELP. IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS OR COULD HELP IN ANY WAY ------IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED. GEORGE PAYNE MARSHALL --------USA ------FLORIDA AND TENNESSEE @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ The Marshall family that I am researching can be found below. They are thought to have come from County Leitrim, at least as evidenced by the death record of one of them. In addition, if anyone is interested, I have built an inventory of Marshall records from every county in Ireland. I also have a collection of other Marshalls from Co. Leitrim, probably connected to my Marshalls, but if so, and how connected is not known. If anyone is interested, just name the county, and I'll send you what I have collected. My Marshall family : JOHN (ROBERT?) MARSHALL b c 1783 in Ireland, and wife ANNE born Ireland. Emigrated to Lower Canada about 1820-24. Settled in Inverness Township, Megantic County, Quebec. Religion : Church of Ireland. Their children (all born in Ireland, all came to Quebec (Lower Canada) 1. ELIZABETH MARSHALL born c 1802 in Ireland, married at Quebec City to JOHN MARSHALL of Ballymena, Co Antrim. They settled on the 3rd Range of Inverness, Lot 5. Their direct descendants claim that they were not related, but rather met on the ship coming to Canada. Children, all born in Inverness Tp., Megantic Co., Quebec, were : Joseph, Mary Ann Elizabeth, John, Robert, and Samuel. 2. WILLIAM MARSHALL born c 1800 in Ireland, married in 1835 at Quebec City to JANE DAVIDSON born in County Tyrone, Ireland. They settled on the 2nd Range, Inverness Township, on lots 9&10. William Marhsall's great-granddaughter, Dorothy Marshall Evans claims that as a boy, William fished on the Shannon River. Children, all born in Inverness Township, were : John, George, Robert, Ann, Alexander, Elizabeth, Catherine, Mary. 3. ROBERT MARSHALL born 1805 in Ireland, married CATHERINE SOMMERVILLE. They settled on the 3rd range of Inverness, lot 5. Catherine died before 1859, as in that year Robert had an illegitimate child by ISABELLE JEFFREY. Children, all born in Leeds Township, Megantic Co., Quebec, were : Robert and John (by Catherine), and William by Isabelle). As shall be seen later, other Church of England families from Mohill Parish, County Leitirm, were marrying Jeffrey's in their new home of Upper Canada. 4. JOHN MARSHALL born c 1814 in Ireland , married ELICIA JEFFREY SIMPSON. They settled on the 2nd Range, Inverness, Lots 9&10. This marriage took place in Canada, but may be by virtue of the Simpsons living in the same area as the Marshalls in County Leitrim -a marriage of friends from back home. However it is not known for certain where the Inverness Simpsons came from. John Marshalls burial record states, "native of County Leitrim." Leitrim is in the Province of Connaught. Child, born in Inverness Township, was : Robert Simpson. And here again, the name Jeffrey appears. Simpsons were also present in several parishes of County Leitrim. 5. MARY MARSHALL born Ireland married in 1831 at Inverness, Quebec to JAMES THOMAS CLARKE, an RC from Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, and former husband of Catherine Nugent, also of Enniskillen. Mary and James Thomas lived on the 2nd Range, Inverness, Lot 12. This Marshall-Clarke marriage is assumed to be by virtue of them being next door neighbours in Inverness, Quebec. Children, all born in Inverness Township, were : John, and Mary. 6. JAMES MARSHALL b c 1800 m MARGARET NUGENT. This marriage may be by virtue of James Thomas Clarke's first wife's Nugent relations. Their children, born outside of Megantic County, but baptized in Megantic County were James, and Isabella. 7. GEORGE MARSHALL married in 1845 to JANE GEORGE. Their children were born outside of Megantic County, but raised by the George family of Inverness Township. Their children were Jessie, and Jane Baird Marshall. My Robert (Bobby) Marshall (1781-1855) was born in either England or Ireland and immigrated to the United States settling into Va where he died and is buried. In 1800 he married Susannah Dodd. It has been said that his parents were Preston Marshall and Alice Handrake of either England or Ireland. Are any of these names in your database of Counties in Ireland?. This line of Marshall's doesn't seem to tie into the other Marshall Families of Va as far as I can tell. If anyone has any information, please help. Thanks Jacque Baker San Diego, Ca [email protected]
