Martha C. Pickle is on the 1850 census, living in the Bedford County, TN in the household of Jonathan and Penelope Leggitt. Penelope's maiden name was Pickle, so it's a safe bet that Martha is related to her; the questions is, how? There are numerous family trees showing Penelope as the child of Henry & Rachel (Neely) Pickle. I thought Martha could be the child of one of Penelope's brothers, but she is not listed as the child of any of the brothers of the 'right' age, and other children are listed. Is that a rare name? I don't think it's that rare. I am under the impression that all the Pickles of Bedford County are related to each other, and that they came from NC. There are Pickle families in PA, but I don't have any reason to think they are related to mine. > That could be a good place to start. Also, if you are sure about the date > of death you can get the death records from the government. They might have > something there for you to pursue. William died before the state of Kansas required death certificates. I have Martha's dc, but all the parental info is "X Pickle" and "don't know". Do you know if he was ever in the > military? You could find out a lot from military records. I don't know if he was in the military or not. He is the right age to have been in the Civil War. Also, look for > land grants in his name or in her name. I know he farmed in Kansas and Illinois, so I can assume he farmed while living in Arkansas and Tennessee. Where do I write for land records? 3. Lyn, I see that you have a good start with your research. Please keep in mind that my advice is really based on my experience in Canada. I do not have much family in the USA, we are all Canadians. I will try my best to help you figure out who your ancestors are and where they can be found. So you have Martha C. Pickle on the 1850 census, how old was she? If she was very young, you may want to find out who has the church records from the time of her birth (baptismal or dedication certification). That could give you her parents. You can find out who has the records by contacting the present day churches to see who holds the records now. I find that a phone call is usually more productive then a letter or email because they church can't push your request to the back burner when you are on the phone with them. Also, you may want to check with the same churches for a marriage record between Jonathan and Penelope Leggitt. That may shed some light on who Martha's parents may really be. Penelope's first husband may have died, or this could have been Penelope's sister, and Penelope's mother had died, or was too sick to take care of Martha. There are many possibilities. One of the things I like to know when I am focusing on a surname is how many other people in the world have the same name. This gives me a good indication as to how easy finding the records for my ancestors will be over finding a record for someone who might be my ancestor. The link http://www.census.gov/genealogy/www/namesearch.html is statical facts about the US 1990 census. You type in a surname and then the program will tell you how much of the population has the same name. A surname I am working on right now is BIGELOW, it is 0.004% common and ranked 3000th in common names. MARSHALL is much more common, so it has a 0.075% frequency and is ranked 119th in common names. PICKLE however is a very rare name! It is 0.002% in frequency and is ranked 5261 in common names! How do you like those odds! I have looked up the Guild For One Name Studies ( http://www.one-name.org/cgibin/search.cgi?find=pickle ) and no one has started one for Pickle yet, but there could always be someone someday. I know that this will sound like a lot of work, but you might have to start tracing all of the Pickles of Bedford County to find where Martha belongs. Doing all of that extra research could pay in the end because as you say, you could very well be related to all of those Pickles. As for the date of William's death, do you know where he is burried? There could be historical records for that cemetery and that may also give you some clues. As for civil war information, I really don't know. Like I said, my experience is limited to research in Canada. But I will try to find out for you ok. I will also try to find out about the land grants for you as well. Good Luck Carol Gabriel List Admin

OK, I'm laughing, because i sort of have already started doing this! As Gregg Bonner put it "If you're a Pickle from Bedford County, you MUST be related to me!" > As for the date of William's death, do you know where he is burried? > There could be historical records for that cemetery and that may also give > you some clues. William is buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Winfield, KS. I have not yet written for any records on him. > As for civil war information, I really don't know. There are several William H.
