    1. Re: [MARSHALL] Capt Marshall & Scarborough ship

    3. Joe, British merchant sea captain John Marshall's ship, Scarborough, was built in the shipyards in Scarborough, Yorkshire so this is most likely where it got it's name. The ship was actually owned by by merchants Thomas, George & John Hopper of Scarborough, Yorkshire. Here are a few technical details on the ship: The Scarborough was built in 1782 in Scarborough, Yorkshire by ship builders John Howard and Ben Fowler. By design, she was a two-decked, barque-rigged vessel (3 masts, square rigged on all but the aftermost mast) and her dimensions were 111.6 feet long and 30.2 feet wide, and weighed 411 tons. Her Deptford survey in 1786 noted that the ship now weighed 418 tons and that height between decks was 6'1" abaft, 6'2" amidships and 5'11" afore. The vessel was armed and capable of carrying a crew of around 35 seaman. This is the same ship he sailed to Australia (Botany Bay) carrying a load of convicts with the First Fleet. In 1788, Captain Marshall left Australia after being released from government service by NSW Governor Arthur Phillip (he had fulfilled his duties) and sailed north by northeast heading toward Whampoa, China, now under contract with the London East India Company. He, sailing together with Captain Thomas Gilbert of the "Charlotte", made his way through the south Pacific islands he discovered and charted that later became known as the Marshall Islands (Gilbert discovered and charted what later become known as the Gilbert Islands). It's interesting that Captain Marshall named one of the islands "Hopper's Island", obviously after the surname of the Hopper brothers that owned the ship he sailed to make his living.
