    1. [MARSHALL] FW: welcome to the mailing list (John Marshall d 1785 Mecklenburg Co, VA)
    2. Rick Arnold
    3. Carol, thank you for the warm welcome. I've joined the list to exchange information on my branch of Mecklenburg Co., VA Marshalls. Here's the family I'm researching: 1. John Marshall b.? m.?, d. Mecklenburg Co.VA 1785 2. Samuel Marshall b. abt 1745, m. Cassandra Alfriend, d.1809 or 1810 Henry Co. VA 3. Sally Marshall b. abt 1764, m. Elisha Arnold, d. Henry Co., VA 4. Lewis Marshall Arnold b. 31 Mar 1790 in Henry Co. VA, m. Hannah Philpott 16 Dec 1813 in Henry Co, VA, d. 15 Sept 1847 Clark Co MO Several Marshall and Arnold siblings from these Henry Co families moved together to Logan Co. Ky. However, mine moved to Cumberland Co Ky and thence to Clark and Lewis counties MO. Before moving to Henry Co. around 1800 the Marshall and Arnold families were neighbors on Mountain Creek in NE Mecklenburg Co., VA (a couple miles NW of present-day South Hill). This area was in Lunenburg Co prior to the creation of Mecklenburg, and was in Brunswick Co, prior to the creation of Lunenburg. One thing I've noticed over the past few years researching these families is that a seemingly close-knit group of families seemed to intermarry and migrate together over several generations. A list of landowners close to the Marshalls on Mountain Creek shows many familiar names of families marrying into the Marshall family or migrating westward with them: ARNOLD, VAUGHN, HARPER, NANCE, LUCAS, ANDREWS and others. By discovering what ties these families together, I'm hoping to discover where they came from. Almost without exception the trail ends a generation or two before the families landed in Mecklenburg County. One theory I'm working on is that these families all arrived in VA, not directly from England, but by way of Barbados. In the mid-1600s Barbados was more populous than the N. American colonies. However, due to many factors, including overcrowding, concentration of wealth and opportunity int he hands of few large landowners, many Barbadians removed to Virginia and other colonies. Many of the familiar Southside Virginia surnames can be found in 17th century Badbados records: Marshall, Arnold (Arnoll), Freeman, Vaughn, Hooper, Harper, Lucas, Applewhite, Gee, Worsham, Ligon, Cooper, Haselwood, Andrews, Lanier, Bacon, Allen. On a 1657 map of Barbados drawn by Richard Ligon, and showing the locations of about 300 plantations, one finds Marshall and Arnold very close to each ! other. I'm happy to share what information I have on any of this, though I've laid most of it out in this email. I'd look forward to corresponding with any Mecklenburg/Henry Co.VA Marshall kin. --Rick Arnold ([email protected]) -----Original Message----- From: The Gabriels in BC [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, February 28, 2004 2:20 PM To: Rick Arnold Subject: welcome to the mailing list Hi there, I am Carol Gabriel, the list administrator for the Marshall Mailing list.
