I've tried two different angles in an attempt to breach my brick wall but have not been successful (been stuck here for many years now). It's been quite a while since I posted my interests so here goes: By chance, does anyone have a Jonathan Marshall who had at least one child with (and likely married) a woman named Sarah Reid in the mid to late 1860s in New York City, possibly Harlem? This child, my Great-grandfather, was named Charles Marshall (no middle name) and was born May 14, 1863 to maybe as late as 1869 (1868 seems the most likely but I can't be sure). Along with all the usual (and many unusual) documents and resources, I have also scoured all the available census returns, including US, Canadian and British) from 1860 through 1900 with no solid results. My first confirmed sighting of him is when he showed up in 1900 as a bachelor to homestead farm land in eastern Washington state (USA). He knew how to farm large scale wheat ranches and did so quite successfully there for hire in Adams County for about 10 years. The 1868 year of birth is based on his age he gave in the homestead papers. The other angle I've tried to pursue is based on an old family story. Is anyone researching the line of Captain John Marshall, merchant sea captain that sailed his ship, the "Scarborough" with the First Fleet to New South Wales, Australia in 1788 and after dropping off his boat load of convicts, sailed on under contract with the East India Company of London to China (Whampoa) for a load of tea to bring back to England. It was during this second leg of his voyage that he found and charted the south Pacific islands that were later called the Marshall Islands (his sailing companion, Captain Gilbert, master of the "Charlotte", charted the islands later called the Gilbert Islands). If anyone is researching either Marshall lines, I would certainly appreciate hearing from your. Charles Marshall Gresham, Oregon USA
