Hi List, I've collected a fair amount of Marshall material searching for my Samuel Marshall, b. ca. 1750 (some say Cumberland Co., PA., in the Rev. War under Capt. David Marshall, but proved this is not so, that was a different Samuel Marshall so not sure where my Samuel was born), married Frances Hazrigg ca. 1772 where?, d/o William & Jemima ( ? ) Hazelrigg, of Westmoreland & Pr. William Co., VA. They were in Washington Co., PA. and later Ohio Co., (W)VA., before migtaing to Adamd Co., then permenantly in Scioto Co., OH. in the late 1790's. The following may be of help to someone: Taken from "West Virginians In The Revolution"........... MARSHEL (MARSHALL), James, (Colonel) Born, Ireland in 1753. Removed some time between 1776 and 1778 to what is now Washington Co., PA., and bought up large amounts of land in Cross Creek Township. Upon the organization of Washington Co., was appointed (1781) county lieutenant, which office he held three years. He was sheriff, 1784 to 1789, member of the Legislature, and recorder of the land office. He later removed to Brooke Co., VA., where he ded in 1829. Judi
Joyce et al, Yes, my ancestor Richard (1730/50-1798) is the one who is likely the brother of Martin & William (& Thomas ? - not shown below). I've not seen proof and my DNA almost seems to lean another direction so I'm still on the search (but not spending much time on the research). The following is a cut & paste of one page from my records of one of two "main" Marshall families from Maryland that many people feel my Richard fits into ( most of this is from Harry Wright Newman's research and Mike Marshall has an excellent website supporting some of this). I haven't updated this information in probably 15 years so you will probably find many errors in it (I have more details and have posted this a few times (so this is redundant)). What I have here differs somewhat from David Martin's site that Chris referred to - I don't claim this is more correct - don't trust what I have here. --------- 1. most of these are all separated out here, I am trying all the William's John's James' Richard Robert Thomas Martin etc., you who have studied this family know what I mean Family F by DNA....there are common ancestors in the past that can be found http://www.chipster.us/AaronMarshallDNAline/default.htm just a few family groups not sure of please share your gap fillers!!!! this is a big puzzle...BIG also there are DNA members of Famliy F (and others) who are not sharing, what is up with that??? Why pay the money and not help figure this out?? I don't get it. Are some of you mad that you are not in a certain line? don't be mad that you are not of CJ's line, be happy you are in what appears to be the largest and oldest, full of pioneers who made/started a whole lot of the towns back then. I just had a guy who wrote and told me he found an old Bible and there is a Joshua Marshall with a father Jonathan. Ties in with Throckmorton. Not sure what fam he is but it shows that there is much to be found. No one had this Joshua's father's name!! I will post that info in a separate post when he sends it to me. Joe, I'm assuming that when you refer to family F you mean Group F of the Marshall Surname Project at Family Tree DNA.If so then I am also a member.A cousin of mine put together a lot of information on our branch before he died and his daughter has put it on the internet. It can be found at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:3328196&id=I00058 There's also an interesting web site at http://www.marshallgenealogy.org/ on what I believe is the Group F Marshall family.Chris Marshall
Hi Terrell, I am family F and working on all this. Can you please send me the first message that you replied to? I can not find it Anyone in Family F needs to please send me their lines. This DNA site guy is not doing anything. I have nearly 75% with the middle name of a mother or grandfather etc. I believe it was a way for them to let us figure this all out. huge chart on here some Family F is not sharing and it would be very helpful if they did 2-3 lines are not DNA but I am certain they do connect DNA site: http://www.chipster.us/AaronMarshallDNAline/default.htm In my line there is a Mahlon Marshall. In another family, there is another Mahlon Marshall off of James Lamborn Marshall b. 1794 and James married a Gillingham which would be Gilliam This James father is Moses (claimed from Germany) however his wife was sister of another lamborn who married John Marshall b. 1735 and he goes back to the Youlgrave England John Marshall. So I do not think Moses was from Germany. My great grandpa for some reason put Spain and Poland for his parents so the census means nothing. It was after the Civil War so maybe he was hit in the head or something ;) If you can send me that message or forward this to her I would appreciate it. Hi there. I am descended from Ida Mae Gilliam (or it may be Gillum), b 1880 in Texas, d 1948 in Oklahoma. Lizzie Ann is her sister (b 1875 in Texas, d 1923 in Oklahoma). According to Ida's death certificate, her mother's name is Sarah P. Marshall (b 1859, d 1923 in Oklahoma). Her last name at the time of her death is Benefield. Here is where it gets confusing. When I put in the family tree file information I have into Ancestry.com, I found it very interesting that it pulled up the 1860 census (in Keytesville, Chariton, Missouri) with Sarah Gilliam being 1 year old and her parents are James and Martha Gilliam. Could it be possible that Ida and Lizzie's last name is her mother's maiden name? If that is the case, I'm not sure where the Marshall came from that was listed on the death certificate. I have been told that Sarah was a Mississippi River Queen and it is very well possible she had her 2 daughters out of wedlock. Is there anyone with connections to this family that can provide any insight? Thanks, Angela Miller

After the marriage of her grand-daughter, Mary McClure Marshall, whom she had raised from infancy to Mr. Terrill, she had removed to their home in Kentucky, where she died. Her kindness was exercised without partiality or display. She seemed happiest when serving others. She fed the hungry, cared for the orphan, clothed the naked and visited the sick. Hi Betty, Just saw your posting on the Marshall List. Cannot offer much, but wanted to say, I am a descendant of the Samuel Marshall and wife Fanny you posted in this e-mail. Fanny's maiden name was Hazelrigg. I have been trying to track all these Marshall's down that lived close to one another, hoping I can learn who their parents were, as I haven't a clue who my Samuel Marshall's parents were. There was an Aaron Marshall who also lived in these counties you have listed. His parents were Col. John Marshall and Eliza Ferrell/Ferral/Ferrill, etc. of Westmoreland Co., VA. and when 10 years old his parents came to what is now Washington Co., PA. and he married Sarah Snowden. This Sarah's brother David married Nancy Hazelrigg, a first cousin to Fanny (Hazelrigg) Marshall, so they surely knew one another. This David Snowden and his future wifes father James Hazelrigg and her brother Joshua Hazelrigg, all fought in the Rev. War and lived in the area of Ft. Redstone (Fayette Co., I believe), which back then covered some of the area which is now Washington Co., if I read my evolving maps correctly. I understand it has not been proven that James & Nancy (Agnew) Marshall, had a son William, b. ca. 1770 PA. and was marrried to Mary (Polly) Campbell, but I do know this William died 5 Oct. 1807 in Adams Co., OH., which is where my 4th great grandfather first made a stop for a couple of years when he left Wash. Co., PA. and before he moved next door to Scioto Co., OH. in 1797 I think it was. This James also named a son Samuel, and curious if for a brother, such as my Samuel Marshall. Hope this helps someone and would love to correspond with anyone who has any further information to help tie this all in or connected to my Samuel Marshall & wife Fanny Hazelrigg, d/o William & Jemima ( ? ) Hazelrigg, of Westmoreland Co. and Pr. William Co., VA., then moved to Clark Co., KY. where he died. Judi Burkhardt judiburkhardt@comcast.net

Hi List, I am interested in the Samuel Marshall that is described in this Marshall Post. My family has a Samuel in it. I thought I would post it for information. In the book, Brooke County Archives, there is a section "Index to Ohio County Records Referring to Brooke County Property 1773-1798. In the Grantor index there is a listing for Samuel Marshell et ux to Roland Mathew page 104, Samuel Marshall et ux to John Roland page 251; etc. There are 3 etries for Samuel Marshall, then James and Agnes Marchell to John Agnew (note: Brother in law) page 345, then Samuel & Fannie Marshell to John Graham, page 345, Samuel & Fannie Marshall to Francis Morrison page 347 (It is my belief that this Samuel Marshell/Marshall is the son of James and Nancy Marchell.) In 1807, Samuel A. Marshall and James Marshall witnessed a deed in Brooke Co, VA. Robert Marshall was a part of the deed. James Marshall of Charlestown, VA signed his will 24 May 1814. He named one of his sons, Samuel Marshall. He states that he has previously given Samuel his portion. James Marshall was married to Nancy Agnew. (Proof of first name:LDS Roll 848626, Brooke County WVA Marriges, Deaths, Wills and Inventories) "Nancy Duvall d.6/15/1857 Parents James and Nancy Marshall Person making death report, Jas.M. Duvall, son. Her nickname was Agnes, as was her daughter's. Proof of Nancy Agnew Marshall's maiden name: Will of Samuel Agnew Dated Sept 1818, probated 1819. He names his Grandchildren, one of which is Samuel A., son of James Marshal, dec'd.. (he inherited land in Washington Co. Pa) Washington Co PA, Will book #3 p. 279. (Note: All of Samuel Agnew's grandsons that were named after him received bequests) >From an index to Deeds, Brooke County W.VA (Marshall names) under Marshall terrace, plan of lots, it lists Grantee Fannie, E. Woomer, Grantor, Samuel A. Marshall, book 67 page 545, April 26, '37 (descendant of Samuel A. Marshall of 1800 ?????????) Then the Deed book under same heading has Fannie Marshall, Grantee, Grantor, Samuel A. Marshall, book 74 page, 323, September 26, '41 Court Order. (again is this a descendant of the 1800 Samuel A. Marshall????) It does not have the 19 before the '37 and '41, but they are handwritten entries down the page after 1907. Just thought I would post this information. I am a descendant of James and Nancy Marshall. Sometimes I just wonder how many more ways the Clerks can find to spell Marshall! Betty In a message dated 4/14/2008 2:01:23 A.M. Hi, I am off of Aaron and there is a Hazelrigg. I have often thought he belongs. There is also a Hazelrigg on the militia list near Aaron. Please contact me and I really want to know why you might think he is a brother. Also there are a number of Marshall orphans he could be. I originally posted this response to the board, but for some reason, it did not get gatewayed to the list. William Henry Alexander MARSHALL, my 2gg uncle, married Anne (Annie) ADAMSON in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1872. Dougan and Catherine Kennedy, PEI. The witnesses to William and Catherine's marriage were a James McCabe and a Mary Ann Dougan. My records indicate that Mary Ann had at least two brothers, Thomas and James. I have not been able to document whether William was a brother. I do know my great grandfather Anthony would visit a cousin A.T. McCabe in Boston, perhaps this would be Alexander Thomas McCabe. If so this would indicate that William too was a brother to Mary Ann. I do know that there is a tombstone of Anthony Dougan at St. Bonaventure-Tracadie that says "In memory of Anthony Dougan who departed this life 7 Feb 1847 Age 61, Erected by affectionate Daughter" Mary Ann Dougan.
