Carol, thank you for the warm welcome. I've joined the list to exchange information on my branch of Mecklenburg Co., VA Marshalls. Here's the family I'm researching: 1. John Marshall b.? m.?, d. Mecklenburg Co.VA 1785 2. Samuel Marshall b. abt 1745, m. Cassandra Alfriend, d.1809 or 1810 Henry Co. VA 3. Sally Marshall b. abt 1764, m. Elisha Arnold, d. Henry Co., VA 4. Lewis Marshall Arnold b. 31 Mar 1790 in Henry Co. VA, m. Hannah Philpott 16 Dec 1813 in Henry Co, VA, d. 15 Sept 1847 Clark Co MO Several Marshall and Arnold siblings from these Henry Co families moved together to Logan Co. Ky. However, mine moved to Cumberland Co Ky and thence to Clark and Lewis counties MO. Before moving to Henry Co. around 1800 the Marshall and Arnold families were neighbors on Mountain Creek in NE Mecklenburg Co., VA (a couple miles NW of present-day South Hill). This area was in Lunenburg Co prior to the creation of Mecklenburg, and was in Brunswick Co, prior to the creation of Lunenburg. One thing I've noticed over the past few years researching these families is that a seemingly close-knit group of families seemed to intermarry and migrate together over several generations. A list of landowners close to the Marshalls on Mountain Creek shows many familiar names of families marrying into the Marshall family or migrating westward with them: ARNOLD, VAUGHN, HARPER, NANCE, LUCAS, ANDREWS and others. By discovering what ties these families together, I'm hoping to discover where they came from. Almost without exception the trail ends a generation or two before the families landed in Mecklenburg County. One theory I'm working on is that these families all arrived in VA, not directly from England, but by way of Barbados. In the mid-1600s Barbados was more populous than the N. American colonies. However, due to many factors, including overcrowding, concentration of wealth and opportunity int he hands of few large landowners, many Barbadians removed to Virginia and other colonies. Many of the familiar Southside Virginia surnames can be found in 17th century Badbados records: Marshall, Arnold (Arnoll), Freeman, Vaughn, Hooper, Harper, Lucas, Applewhite, Gee, Worsham, Ligon, Cooper, Haselwood, Andrews, Lanier, Bacon, Allen. On a 1657 map of Barbados drawn by Richard Ligon, and showing the locations of about 300 plantations, one finds Marshall and Arnold very close to each ! other. I'm happy to share what information I have on any of this, though I've laid most of it out in this email. I'd look forward to corresponding with any Mecklenburg/Henry Co.VA Marshall kin. --Rick Arnold ([email protected]) -----Original Message----- From: The Gabriels in BC [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, February 28, 2004 2:20 PM To: Rick Arnold Subject: welcome to the mailing list Hi there, I am Carol Gabriel, the list administrator for the Marshall Mailing list. Hi Jeanne -- This is totally a longshot -- but, I have a Thomas Marshall who was born in Ireland, came to Georgia with his parents and 6 siblings in 1769. By the end of the Revolutionary War he was the only one of the family left in the U.S. I lose track of him in the 1790's. I can give you more information on his parents and siblings -- but have no idea if he stayed in Georgia, moved elsewhere, married, or whatever. My information is here if you're interested. Carrell, Go to my web site at www.marshallgenealogy.org and you will find everything I know about them. Do you connect? If so I would like to have that information. James is my 2nd great granduncle. I have several thousand of his descendants and cousins. He is Martin Marshall's son by his first wife, but I do not know who his mother was. That remains a mystery. Do you mind giving me some documentation about the people earlier than Martin Marshall? I Have good documentation about Martin and his descendants, but his ancestors are not well documented. Hello, I just joined this mailing list. My ancestor is Robert "Bobby" Marshall born in 1781 in England or Ireland, shows up in this country before 1800 and marries Susannah Dodd in Franklin Co Va. I'm looking for information on this line including the ship's name and location that he first arrived on in the US. Also parents names and information about the Dodd's. If there are any "cousins" out there, I would love to share information about this line of Marshall's. Thanks Jacque Baker [email protected]
The Indians in the Oconto area were very peaceable by the 1850's. It's more likely that his mother was a member of the Menominee tribe. I suggest finding your Henry Marshall on the 1860 and later US census to find his parentage. Barbara Vander Leest PhD
Thank you for the welcome Carol. I have been sitting on the sidelines since the 31st of January 2004. The man I'm trying to research: Henry Marshall born about 1855 in Oconto, as listed on his marriage licence. He also said his father's name was Denis, no mention of his mother. Seems he was quite closed mouthed about his background. He was raised by some Indian's after the age of btw. 8 -14, I had heard because the family was massacred by a fierce Indian tribe and he was the only surviver. There was some battle between borders, which border I don't know. Now I have heard a different version that he ran away from home and went to the Indians and they took him in? I don't have much to go on, I'm afraid. I don't know if he had brothers and sisters, depending which story is true he may have had surviving brothers & sisters. When I get more info. I will post it. Darthy Seems I sent the first one to the wrong address.
Joan, Is there a way to tie the participants into Andy Marshall's Marshall DNA Study? That would broaden both of the studies. Are the Marshall's that are part of the Salisburys, from Cheshire? My paternal grandmother was a Marshall/Gregory descendant, but I have not yet traced that family back farther than 1850 in IA. I'm been told that the Marshalls were Scotch-Irish, but have not found any evidence of that. Perhaps, at some point, it would be possible to tie the two studies together, but it's very early in the Salisbury study---I'd rather wait for results of more participants. However there are all kinds of exciting possibilities. Joan Salisbury Earnshaw [email protected] wrote: >Joan, >Is there a way to tie the participants into Andy Marshall's Marshall DNA >Study? -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Salisbury DNA Study Date: Tue, 13 Jan 2004 16:49:37 -0700 From: Joan Earnshaw <[email protected]> To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> I'd like to announce the beginning of the Salisbury DNA study. I have arranged this with the Genetic Technologies Lab for the simple reason that Salisburys seem to be very hard to trace, not only for me, but others as well. I have arranged for a reduced price with the lab. It will work like this: Since this study is to trace the Y chromosomes (the male descendancy), it is limited to males. (Ladies, regretfully, the cost to trace mitochrondrial DNA or the female is twice the price as the males). First: contact Genetic Technologies, Inc http://www.genetictechnologies.com phone : 636-451-GENE or toll free: 877-451-GENE Second: mention my name in order to receive the reduced rate: Joan Earnshaw Third: Arrange for a sample collection by the lab I will be the coordinator of the study. This is to trace the various branches of the family. In a family as large as the Salisburys, there could easily be 50 branches. If you have any questions, please contact me and/or the lab. My hope is to be able to find the branch or branches that first came to the US from England, and also to be able to locate the branch or branches that are still in England or other parts of the world. Participation in this study is open to individuals anywhere in the world. If you want to discuss this on the phone, please send me an email saying so and I'll email you my phone number.
