    3. This is off the subject of genealogy but I must ask the list if they are getting bombed with Spam mail. I have two e mail addresses and this one is used for rootsweb lists ONLY, nothing else. All other mail goes to another address. I belong to a number of rootsweb lists. Has rootsweb sold our addresses?? I apologize if I have irritated anyone on this list but would like to know if anyone else is having the same problem. Thanks, Fern

    3. Hello everyone, SPAM is an issue that we all need to be aware of and we all need to address. The following few paragraphs are directly from the List Administrators help pages at Roots Web regarding SPAM. RootsWeb recently began using MAPS databases to block incoming Spam. This may result in subscriber's messages being blocked, if their ISP (service provider) is listed in the database. Mail caught in the MAPS filters it will look similar to this: ----- Transcript of session follows ----- ... while talking to newmail.rootsweb.com.: >> MAIL From: << 550 5.0.0 Mail from 209.51.167.10 refused by blackhole site relays.mail-abuse.org If someone caught in the MAPS filters contacts you, please direct them to the help pages, which explain what steps they should take. RootsWeb constantly adjusts their filters; they block the vast majority of spam from reaching the lists. I you can easily check to see if the SPAM made it to you through the list by looking at the Subject line of your emails. Everything that comes through the Marshall List will have [MARSHALL] at the beginning. For example, the subject line of this email is: Re: [MARSHALL] Puzzeled If by some chance the SPAM by passes Rootsweb and me, then please forward a copy of the spam to me so that I can report it to Rootsweb. If anyone has any other questions, comments or concerns then please let me know. Happy Hunting Carol Gabriel List Admin

    3. Hello all, I am interested in communicating with any descendants of a British military officer, James Neville Marshall, who was killed in France in the final days of World War One. Marshall was a member of the Irish Guards, and won a Victoria Cross, Britain's highest military decoration. I'm in the early stages of beginning a biography about this man, and thus would love to have an opportunity to chat with any descendants. Many thanks, Eric Benjaminson [email protected]

    3. Hello, I believe there were a number of different Marshalls coming to the new country. My ancestors sailed from County Lincoln in England about 1633, arriving in Boston. This was Thomas. His son Samuel moved to Windsor Ct. and established a large family there in the late 1600's. Many of those moved to New York and other parts of New England. At least one son moved to the Midwest. My ancestor, a grandson of Capt Samuel, b. 1705 moved to NY Pa Va NC SC and settled in Ga in 1770/1. There is much about this family in Stiles' ANCIENT HISTORY OF WINDSOR. Hope this is of some value. 1. MARSHALLS of Glenkeen, County Tyrone
    2. Judy,          I just found your archived postings on the Marshall Rootsweb listerve.  I think we might be working on the same Marshall family back in County Tyrone, although it'll take some sleuthing to put two and two together.          You mentioned that your Joseph Marshall immigrated from the townland of Glenkeen, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.  I also have an ancestor named Joseph Marshall who lived in the townland of Glenkeen, back in the early 1700s.  But I don't think yours and mine are the same guy.  They could be cousins or otherwise related, though, as it appears that this family used a couple of given names repeatedly.  Henry, Joseph, ...  Do you know the name of your Joseph's father or mother?  My Joseph was the son of Henry Marshall of Curlagh, who married a Miss Harris.  This would have been in the late 1600s.  This Miss Harris was the daughter of Arthur Harris, who mentioned her in his 1712 will.  Arthur Harris was a church official in the Church of Ireland, and was a graduate from Trinity University Dublin, back in the 1600s.  I have a brief biographical sketch of him from an Church of Ireland Ecclesiastical History.          Anyway, my Joseph Marshall of Glenkeen had a son named Henry Marshall, who was born c.1727.  Henry lived in "Derrykintone," a little townland near the town of Caledon, and died there in 1811.  Henry was buried in the local Church of Ireland churchyard in Caledon (St. John's).  This Marshall family were members of the Anglican church or Church of Ireland,...(so when I saw that you mentioned that your Joseph Marshall was a Loyalist in the Revolution, it would stand to reason, as the Marshalls of Glenkeen and area were monarchists in the old country.)           My Joseph of Glenkeen never immigrated to the U.S., but at least two of his daughters did.   They both settled in Pennsylvania, and then Ohio.  I am descended from his daughter Margaret (Marshall) McCracken who immigrated to Maryland in June/July of 1784.  She and her family later moved to Pennsylvania, then into Ohio in 1816.          I'm rather new to the Marshall search, but got a significant "jump start" when I came into possession of a bunch of genealogical research done back in the 1860s by a distant cousin who traveled back to County Tyrone in June of 1868.  She interviewed older "cousins" who were still living in the area, who remembered some of the older family of the 1700s.          Some of the other townlands that the Marshall lived in were: Glenkeen, Curlagh, Glandavagh, Bohard, et al.  If you look at a map of Aghaloe Parish, in County Tyrone, you'll see that several of these townlands bordered each other, so it makes sense that they would have been somehow connected.  The trick will be to figure out "how".  HA!          I'd love to trade/share information with you, as the old adage is often true, "two heads are better than one."  I am also working with another researcher from Nova Scotia, who is also connected to the Marshall clan from the Glenkeen vicinity.  Next spring, after I finish graduate school, I'm planning a trip to Northern Ireland to see what I can find to bolster the research I already have.          In the meantime, let's see if we can put some pieces of the Marshall puzzle together on this side of the pond.  I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.  I'll be happy to share with you what I have, and would appreciate anything you might have gleaned on the Marshalls back in County Tyrone.  I think that's where we'll find our Marshall connection. Sincerely, A Marshall descendant, Andy Miller, Columbus, Ohio

Some stayed in that area, some settled in nearby Lebanon, County and my branch moved on to Logan County, Ohio around 1830 and in the late 1800s to Defiance, County, OH and thence on to Lucas County Ohio. Others went on to Kansas and elsewhere. 1. Re: [MARSHALL] Family trees
    2. Sorry, My Marshall family were settled in Maryland near Washington, D.C. My mother was a Marshall and Married a distant cousan, my father, also a Marshall. They lived happily for many years on the farm in Maryland, south of DC. My brother George Lynwood was born first, than my brother and I (twins) were born later. We are both surviving nearing our 80's. Good luck with your family tree, Catherine Alice Marshall Palmer
