I read your email with interest. I have a civil war photo album of my gg grandfather's who contains a signed photo of General Basil Duke and General John Hunt Morgan who served my ancestor. Both were handsome men. Fern, Do you know the descendants of your Major Thomas Marshall? I have an ancestor named William H. Marshall, borna about 1832 in North Carolina, married Martha C. Pickle around 1852 near Memphis, TN, died 3 January 1877 in Cowley County KS. He and Martha lived in TN at least until 1858, were in Arkansas in 1862, moved to Illinois for the 1870 census and were in KS by 1873. I have no information whatsoever on William's parents. Hi Richard, welcome to the list. I have Marshalls in my family though they are not my main line which is Buford/Beauford(t). Do you know of any of your Marshalls who came to America and when did they arrive here. I have a Major Thomas Marshall who served as one of the original Minute Men when we were fighting for America's independence from England. He was from Fauquair, Virginia. I have a William McClung who married Susan Tarlton Marshall, the sister of Chief Justice John Marshall. I have a Mary "Polly" McDowell who married Alexander Marshall on the 10th of October, 1794. Hope some of these people ring a bell. Good luck in your search. If you run across any BEAUFORD(t)'s let me know. I have a Richard Beauford who came to America in 1635. He was the first one to immigrate and now he would turn over in his grave if he knew how many Beauford/Buford descendants he has. Take care and have a good one. The thing that one must do; is to have your server keep all Spam email; Suspect email, etc. Then they will hold it and you can go to the address provided with your password and that will put a stop to your receiving all that unwanted mail. You have your server delete them for you. I go to the address listed for me and type in my password, and if I find that I have an email from someone I really know, is to have them to send it to my home computer. I have had as many as over 600 emails(Spam) and I could neither send or receive emails, since they filled my box up. I have had no trouble since. Then if someone you want to hear from; my server sends me an email stating that some person wants to email me and if I know them; I will give permission for them to sign that they want to get in touch with me. That way you can either reject or receive it. Have no problem since then. Thanks again, Fern It is not rootweb's fault, it is a hazard of using your email address online. According to the investigators, spammers typically use computer programs that search public areas on the Internet to compile, capture, or otherwise "harvest" lists of email addresses from web pages, newsgroups, chat rooms, and other online destinations. Hi Rita, I was getting the same as you mentioned below which I have copied and pasted:: And all sorts from Africa asking me to help them claim , this or that large amount of US Dollars , Which are sitting in banks all over the world, They are Driving me crazy, Until I unsubed from a particularly busy list "Palmers" and it stopped immediately. The rest of the SPAM is still coming in at an alarming rate. One in every 6 e mails is junk. Just go figure. Hi -- A while back I put Symantec/Norton Anti Virus on my computer. Somewhere in these programs is an anti spam feature which automatically throws the garbage to a folder called Norton Anti Spam Folder. There's also a feature where you can mark an item then click on a button called "This is Spam" and it blocks the address. It's amazing how much junk is in the Anti Spam Folder, but at least I don't have to contend with it! Judy Bingham Fullerton, California
Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it. One List Mom got really riled up because I even suggested that rootsweb shared our e mail addresses. I am getting a lot of Spam and I am just about ready to unsubscribe from them all. I don't get any thru my other e mail address. My husband thinks they get them thru rootsweb somehow. Probably not intentionally but I think there is a problem with it somehow. Thanks again, Fern ----- Original Message ----- From: "D Marshall" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, September 23, 2004 12:13 PM Subject: Re: [MARSHALL] Puzzeled > Yes, I have been getting lots of junk spam letters and have wondered where in the sam hill they were coming from. I have been getting a lot of spam lately. I use this address for everything, so it's impossible to know why I'm suddenly getting so much spam. We are getting a whole lot of spam & junk stuff also. I was wondering where all it came from. Some days I get 10-20 things. It has been making me mad too. Okay everyone, as great a topic as SPAM is, we need to put a stop to this and get on with our research. Otherwise we will scare off the new subscribers we have. I can see that I am the only one that has watched the Discovery Channel's special on the internet and SPAM. SPAM works by having one person copy your email address and selling it to one person. That one person then sells it to ten other people and those ten sell it to ten more people. Those 100 people now sell it to ten more people each and it carries on like this. So even if you have ever only used one email address to send one joke to one person ever, all it takes is for that one person to forward you email onto someone else without deleting the original sender information. Your email address can then be tracked all over the world in a matter of seconds. SPAM is just like junk snail mail and telemarketers, we are going to get them no matter what we try to do about it. As a list admin I get between 30 to 40 a day. It is all apart of life. Happy Hunting Carol Gabriel List Admin p.s.Rootsweb would never sell your email addresses to anyone. It is part of their privacy policy. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, September 23, 2004 8:11 AM Subject: Re: [MARSHALL] Puzzeled > Fern, > > This is just my opinion, I do not think Rootsweb would sell our addresses. > As for Spam mail I have noticed it comes and goes, I will get tons of it for a > while and then almost none. Yes, I have been getting lots of junk spam letters and have wondered where in the sam hill they were coming from. I have SBC and they monitor the mail if you wont them to but it comes thru as bulk mail but I have been getting about 10-2- a day some days. I had wondered how to get them stopped. Fern, This is just my opinion, I do not think Rootsweb would sell our addresses. As for Spam mail I have noticed it comes and goes, I will get tons of it for a while and then almost none. Also, it will come in categories, all kinds of pills and recently stock market offers. Lynette in CA, hoping I don't wear out the delete button
