BTW, Mary Louisa 'Lou' RUST who m'd Presley B MARSHALL is also a MARSHALL descendant. Her grandmother was Elizabeth MARSHALL (b.1779), daughter of William MARSHALL, of Frederick Co, MD. Elizabeth MARSHALL m'd John RUST and lived on the Shenandoah River in Warren Co, VA. In fact, for a short time, Presley B & "Lou" (RUST) MARSHALL lived in her grandparent's big house on a bluff over the Shenandoah River, about 4 miles from Front Royal. (Grandparents had died; but the house was still in their hands.) I believe they were there for the 1870 Warren Co, VA Census. Shirley S. [email protected] > Presley Benjamin MARSHALL, b. 2 Feb 1839. I saw an Elizabeth BARNETT among your Marshalls. For a long time, I've been searching for a Joseph BARNETT, b. 14 Feb 1805, somewhere in Kentucky (1850 Jasper Co, MO Census) He is a direct ancestor for whom I can find little more. He married Martha Nee? about 1825 in Alabama. Migrated to Jasper Co, MO. Their daughter, Lucy Jane BARNETT, b.22 Jan 1828 is my ancestor. Perchance would you have such a Joseph Barnett among your Barnetts of Green Co, KY? Shirley S > "S. E. Sorry I don't have any information on the Barnett's. Terry has helped me a lot with this information for Thos. Rawlings MARSHALL. I have been trying to research and find descendants of one of his sons, Presley Benjamin MARSHALL, b. 2 Feb 1839. [Source: Family Bible presented to Presley B Marshall's 2nd wife, Mary Louisa 'Lou' RUST, on their marriage in Warren Co, VA.] In my efforts I believe I have some incorrect information. (Can't blame anyone but myself for this.) I made some assumptions based on Census findings in Charlotte Co, VA. I'd appreciate some untangling, if you can. For one thing, I had the marriages reversed. On the 1850 Charlotte Co, VA Census, pg. 58. It has: Thomas R MARSHALL, 53, b. Charlotte Co as head.. Mary A MARSHALL, 36, b. Campbell Co, VA James B, 16 Thomas H, 15, PRESLEY B, 12 ** I'll stop there, for he is the one I felt certain was the Presley Benj. MARSHALL who m'd "Lou" Rust. (I hope this is the correct one. I found an older Presley MARSHALL in the same county; but much older than Presley B Marshall.) When Lou Rust m'd Presley B MARSHALL, he had two children from a previous marriage: Emmett W MARSHALL, b. November, 1859 (Birthdate from 1900 census.) Mollie E MARSHALL, b. 1861 (Birthdate from 1870 Warren Co, VA Census) I would very much like to find more about these children from Presley B's first family. I've been able to track Emmett through Texas. (At least I hope it is the right Emmett Marshall.) But I totally lose Mollie. From a letter which Lou RUST MARSHALL writes from Palo Pinto Co, TX, to her parents in Warren Co, VA... I learn that Mollie is expecting her first baby. Unfortunately, her married name is not mentioned and I have not found a marriage record for Mollie. I would also like to find out what happened to Presley B Marshall. BTW, he is listed on the census as Preston MARSHALL in 1880 Palo Pinto Co, TX census. District 155; Pg. 141b. Also in their household, awaiting the birth of Lou's baby, are my Great Uncle, Edward G MASSIE and his wife, Sarah Jane (RUST) Massie. [To further complicate this picture.. these Rust ladies are sisters & they are 1st cousins of my Great Grandfather Edward Scott RUST.] Corrections greatly appreciated and additions will thrill!! Thanks.. Shirley Starks [email protected] > Sorry I forgot to add the text! > Ancestors of Thomas Rawlings MARSHALL > > Generation No. 1 > > 1. Yes, it is of interest as Benjamin was born in 1815 so his parents had to be born in the 1700's. Since he named one of his sons Benjamin, it's very likely that his father could also have been named Benjamin. Thanks Joan Duane W. Dear Joan just last night I was looking --on the internet ----at Marshall's in PA and found in the Philly area A Charles, Christopher, and Benjamin Marshall They were under birth records for their children. I will have to go to the site again to find the names of Benjamin's children. The time frame however was from the 1740's to 1780's. If this is of interest let me know. Thanks for responding. This is Thomas Beverly's brother, Samuel Marshall's autobiography: The following taken from "Biographys of Texas" I found in Bonham, Fannin Co. TX, library. A salesman would come to your home and for $5.00 you could have your biography included in the coming edition. This is what Samuel E. Marshall submitted for print: "S. E. Marshall, a prominent merchant of Whitewright, Texas, and an early settler of Grayson Co. was born in Green Co. KY, May 28, 1838, and is a son of Beverly and Elizabeth (Barnett) Marshall. Beverley Marshall was a native of Virginia, but when quite a young man went to Kentucky and settled in Green County where he employed himself in planting until his death in 1873, at the age of eighty. Mrs. Elizabeth Marshall was a native of Green Co. KY, and was a daughter of Colonel William Barnett, a pioneer of the county in which his daughter was born. S. E. Marshall is the second of three children, still living, born to his parents, the other two being -- Thomas B. and James E. In 1862, S. E. Marshall enlisted in the Confederate army, Thirty-fourth Texas volunteers, under Colonel Terrell, and served west of the Mississippi River until the close of the war. At Arkansas Post he was taken prisoner and was taken to Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois, where he was confined five months and then exchanged. He rejoined his regiment and did further service, but on April 8,1864, he was again captured, but this time between Mansfield and Pleasant Hill, in Louisiana, and was exchanged. On his return to his regiment, he was placed in the quartermaster's department, in which he served until the close of the dreadful struggle. He then returned to his home in Kentucky, where he remained until 1868, at which early day he removed to Grayson Co. TX, which has since been his place of residence, and where he was engaged in prosperous farming until 1884. In this last-mentioned year he moved to Whitewright and until 1886 conducted a hardware and grocery store, and then opened his present furniture store, in which is kept everything appertaining to an establishment of that character. In 1860 Mr. Marshall married Miss Mary C., daughter of Sam White, of Kentucky, and three children blessed this marriage. I don't remember if I responded previously or not. Benjamin Marshall moved to IA in 1839 from either OH or PA. He married Malinda Wright in IA. Malinda was born in OH. Benjamin and his wife Malinda had Hannah, Mary, Martha, Elvira, Thomas, William, Benjamin, Laura born 1857. Laura married James Gregory and had Emma (my paternal grandmother), Clyde, Thomas and Hurley. So I don't know if there is a connection or not. Sometimes, if they're cousins, it's hard to tie down until you find the entire family. Joan Earnshaw Duane W. Marshall wrote: >Dear Joan, > >My husband's father was from Iowa. Dear Peggi, My information is primarily from a collateral descendant, The Rev Edward Chauncy Marshall, of New York City, written in the mid 1840,s. I was able to copy his handwritten manuscript about 1960 from its owner in Windsor Ct. According to this My Thomas, the immigrant arrived in Boston aboard the ship Griffin on September 18, 1634. He was a widower and brought his sons, Thomas and Samuel and daughters Sarah and Frances. Other references say he brought only the sons and the daughters were from a subsequent marriage. According to E C Marshall, he said viewing the available facts, he probably came Boston, Lincolnshire or from immediate vicinity and was of the Tidd St. Mary's Marshall Family. I am descended from his son Samuel who moved to Windsor, Ct. Hope this is of some use. Hi Peggi, That would make my Thomas over a hundred years old but it might be possible for his ancestor to have sailed about then. Let me check on a couple of things and I'll get back to you. Hello Richard, I have William MARSHALL born Newcastle on Tyne 1710 , son of mariner , William Marshal who was a Gunner , RN , and later married Christian HUTTON in 1729. They moved to the Isle of Wight and one of their sons , Elias , Ships Carpenter in the Royal Navy became Master Shipwright , HM Careening Yard , Halifax , Nova Scotia. Many of his family were seafarers , and several became Captains and Commanders ; some serving in the Battle of Trafalgar 1805. South Shields is close to Newcastle so maybe there is a connection. Happy to send you my working notes if you think it worthwhile.
