John supposedly emigrated from Ireland to New York, living there for a number of years before moving to Virginia. I have not found public record of John in New York before. Today at the Waco Library I found two items of interest that may be this John. First, from a book of orders of the early governors of New York: 17 January 1732 - President Van Dorn Military commissions for Orange County, New York: Alex Colden, Capt. John Wilkins, Lieut. Stephann Christ, Ensign James McNeal, Lieut. John Markham, Lieut. Cadwalle Colden, Ensign This would be about the right time for my John Markham to have been in New York. Some say his oldest son, William, was born in Orange County, New York about 1737. John married Catharine Mathews, probable daughter of Col. Peter Mathews of New York. Peter was in New York City for awhile, and later settled in Albany. His son Vincent Mathews became a large landholder in Orange County, New York. Secondly, published in the New York Gazette, 27 February 1738/39: "John Hickey, an Irishman, age c. 18, runaway from John Markham, living in the highlands near Goshen, New York." [Goshen is in Orange County - BPB] Does anyone know more about this John Markham and his presence in New York?
