I thought I would post this again. Several of us on this list are kin, and looking into why this killing happened. Webster Parish, La. Query Forum Any copies of the Minden Herald for Feb 1856 still exist? Posted by [7]David W. Morgan <dmorgan@efn.org> on Wed, 30 Sep 1998 I am looking for newspaper articles about the killing of John Markham by D.J. Morris. Here is all I have. Gleanings from Caddo Parish, Louisiana Newspapers 1844-1865: Caddo Gazette, Shreveport Journal, The South-Western. Compiled by W. V. Head. The Minden Herald says a few days ago D. J. Morris killed John Markham, both of Claiborne Parish, by stabbing him in the breast and side. It occurred at the house of Morris. The case was investigated before Judge H. A. Drew and Morris was discharged. [The South-Western, Feb 13 1856] Was Minden in Claiborne Parish in 1856? I thought it was in Bienville. Markham's estate was settled in Bienville. Markham's brother-in-law, James Upshaw, was Sheriff of Bienville Parish in 1865, may have been sheriff before then, I don't know. I would appreciate any help. John Markham was my great great grandfather. He married Sarah E. Upshaw in 1843 in Noxubee County, Mississippi. _________________________________________________________________ Responses * [8]Minden Herald for 1856 : CAROLYN WASHINGTON -- Wed, 30 Sep 1998 _________________________________________________________________ Minden Herald for 1856 Posted by [6]CAROLYN WASHINGTON <CWASHIN436@OL.COM> on Wed, 30 Sep 1998, in response to [7]Any copies of the Minden Herald for Feb 1856 still exist?, posted by David W. I was trying to find the father of my 2 Morris boys, James R, b 1845 and William J. b 1839. There was a Daniel J Morris in Claiborne Parish, 1850. I was just sure he would be a long lost grandpa. But alas, he is not my granddaddy. He is, however, almost assuredly the DJ Morris who stabbed John Markham. He is the only Morris in the Parish in 1850. The census lists his age as 32, born in VA, a planter, value of real estate $500, his wife Martha(?) age 35, also b in VA, dau Nancy, age 5, b in VA, son John Y Morris, age 3 b in LA ( meaning they arrived in LA ca 1846), and dau Jane, age 1 b in LA. Also living in household is a Mathew Bean (sp?), age 33 and George Bean, age 22. I don't see any Markhams in the immediate vicinity, nor do I have any idea why Morris might have wanted Markham dead. Good luck- hope this helps. I was awfully disappointed not to find a Morris granddaddy, but maybe I wouldn't want this one. Melinda *** David dmorgan@efn.org David W. Just came across this query today. It seems that the cemeteries for Webster Parish LA have been published in a book. If John Markham ever had a tombstone, maybe it is still there and listed in this book. Webster Parish, La. When I was in Minden several months ago I visited the genealogist at the library there. I believe that the genealogy section is new at the library. I visited a cousin who lives in Vivian, LA and she and I took a trip there about 2 months ago. It was a weekend and John, the genealogist, doesn't work weekends. We did find some things we already had that had been in the Shreveport Library and Minden now has, so they are building their resources. There are no copies of the Minden newspaper from the date stated in the article that David found. It boils down to 'sloppy housekeeping'. The genealogist in Minden has sent several letters out, but has had no reply concerning the stabbing death of John Bunyon Markham. I also tried to find his marker in the Sparta Cemetery, but there is no marker. I have a feeling that he was buried and nothing was done following that. His wife's brother was sheriff at that time and his name is mentioned in the follow-up in that the judge (I'm bad at names) at the time dismissed charges against Morris. The brother, James, was apparently friends with the judge. There have generations of judges by the same name since that time. Minden is a tight-knit community with generations of families living in the area. I visit Minden several times a year and if I find anything at all I most certainly will let all of you know. The genealogist has my e-mail address and will inform me of anything he finds out concerning the stabbing. He is as curious as any of us are.
