I'm not sure how to post to the list, so I'm replying to your post to see what happens. Here's my question: I keep seeing on various internet sites and in personal records some of the members have shared with me a line of Marcum/Markhams ascribed to the original Thomas Markham who came into Jamestown in about 1635, married Susan Greenleaf, etc. I have personally seen land records for a Thomas Markham, Jr. across the James River from Thomas Senior, and am willing to admit this is fairly good evidence of a father/son relationship. However, I keep seeing a line traced from Thomas Sr. and Jr. all the way to the Arthur Markham/Marcum/Malcom who wound up in Bedford and Botetourt Counties, Virginia, and from whom I can prove descent through original records. (This Arthur had sons James, John, Arthur, and Thomas, according to William and Fonda Markham's book, and I tend to agree with them, although the only firm proof I have for my own line is a processioner's record of son John filling in for father Arthur, who, as we know, was infirm and unable to walk the boundaries himself by then.) Now. Does anyone have any actual documentation of the line I keep seeing from Thomas Jr to Bedford County Arthur, or is everyone just accepting as fact the hypotheses made in William and Fonda's book, which they say is "generally accepted by genealogists working that line" ? It would indeed be nice for me if someone has proof, for example, that the Arthur Markham who died in Bedford after 1791 was the same Arthur who was born in Henrico County c. 1730 to the Arthur born c. 1670 who is supposed to be the son of Thomas Jr. This would put me back to original immigrant on that family, and would delight me greatly, but does anyone have the SOURCES? I keep seeing the info, but there never seem to be any footnotes, and this would be wonderful information for me if I could confirm it from the original documents. The information I keep seeing has been received most recently from Sandy, who was kind enough to forward her line to me, and I suspect she may have gotten most of it (she didn't say) perhaps from Tommy's site. I love Tommy's site, but again, have found no individual footnotes except for some general credits at the beginning. One of those credits is to Willam and Fonda's book. All this brings me back to my original question. Does anyone on the list have any independent verification of this line, or does it in fact all track back simply to William and Fonda's book, which is a great starting point, but a little shy on documentation in some places? I invite comments from anyone with information. I have shared pieces of my research with several people on the list, and am always happy to do so. I hope to begin posting some of my accummulated data to the list after the first of the year. (census, tax, probate, court minutes, processioner's records, birth and death records, etc. related to the Markham/Marcum/Malcom lines in early Virginia, especially in the Bedford/Botetourt/Jennings Creek area, which Tommy's site illustrates so well. David, your efforts are greatly appreciated, as were those of the previous listowner, whom I consider a friend. Karen Marcum Brandon -----Original Message----- From: David W.
