Dear Markham List Friends, I had a number of requests for the report on the Markham/Marcums in Jefferson and Wayne co, Illinois. So, I am sending it through the Markham List Group. It will arrive in three parts. The first report follows, on Elisha Marcum and Sally Keen who married about 1796 in Franklin co, Va--and removed to Sumner co, Tennessee. The next two parts will cover Markham/Marcums who settled in Jefferson and Wayne counties in southern Illinois. My "speculation" is that the Sarah Marcum who appears in the 1840 census of Wayne co, Illinois, is the same as Sally Keen who married Elisha Marcum. And, that she is perhaps the mother of some of the men who appear in Jefferson and Wayne co, Ill. Your comments, questions and corrections are welcome! Nearby we find William Keen bc. 1809; James Keen bc.1812; John Keen Sr bc. 1816 and Blanton Keen. All the Keen men born in Tennessee. Note: this Sally Markem bc.1783 would be a little young to marry in 1796, but we really don't have a marriage record for Elisha Markham and Sally Keen, just a date. The Keen family appears along side the Marcums in Wayne co, Ill in 1860. It seems likely that this is Sally Keen Marcum. Is she the mother or grandmother of most of the Marcum men in Wayne and Jefferson co, Illinois?
