THE MARKHAM FAMILY DEAD... "The Dance of Death, painted on the wall of the Markham chantry in the church of St. Mary Magdalene in Newark. The grinning corpse warns of the certainty of death even for those most blest with worldly riches, as the man on the right certainly is, with his fashionable clothes and sword, heavy chain, and purse. The chapel was endowed in the early sixteenth century for the recitation of a daily requiem in memory of the Markham family dead." "Oxford Illustrated History of Tudor and Stuart Britain", edited by John Morrill, and published 1996. On page 111, in a discussion of death customs in Britain, it displays a picture of a two panelled painting found in a Newark Church in England. One panel shows a dancing skeleton of sorts, and the other is of a well-dressed Englishman. [Submitted by Pam Garrett.] I can not let this one go...
